The artwork broadly follows the original 1998 game’s regional layout, so claims that the remake map is a specific number of times larger are speculation.
What Nintendo actually revealed
Nintendo shared a parchment-style illustration showing Hyrule’s major regions and tribal symbols associated with the Kokiri, Zora, Gorons, Hylia and Gerudo. The illustration is an official piece of remake artwork, not a measured development map or a published scale diagram.

The broad geography remains recognizable to players of the 1998 release. Hyrule Castle and Death Mountain sit toward the north, Kakariko Village and Zora’s Domain are to the east, Kokiri Forest is southeast, Lake Hylia is south, and Gerudo Valley is west. Nintendo Wire reported the map reveal on September 22, 2026.
Has Nintendo confirmed the remake’s map size?
No. Nintendo has not published a numerical area, map width, map height, traversal distance or scale for the remake’s playable world. The proportions in promotional artwork cannot establish how large the explorable environment is, because an illustration can compress, expand or rearrange locations for readability.
#1 Best Overall
- This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
- The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
- “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes
The most accurate description is therefore “official map illustration revealed.” A statement such as “the remake has a map of 10 square miles” or “is twice as large as the original” would require a measurement Nintendo has not provided.
Remake and original map: what can be compared now?
| Comparison point | 1998 original | 2026 remake evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Regional placement | The familiar Hyrule arrangement established in the original game | Broadly preserved in Nintendo’s illustrated map |
| Landmark density | Defined by the original game’s overworld, settlements, dungeons and routes | Not measurable from the promotional illustration |
| Geographic fidelity | Source layout for the remake’s recognizable regions | Major regions remain in broadly corresponding positions |
| Playable versus decorative locations | Established by the released game | Nintendo has not confirmed which illustrated details represent playable spaces |
| Numerical scale | No directly comparable modern measurement is supplied here | Not stated by Nintendo |
This means the map supports a conclusion about layout, not a conclusion about size. It also does not prove that every symbol, road, settlement or environmental detail shown will be an explorable location.

What is changing in the remake
Nintendo says the remake is “built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system.” Its announced upgrades explain why the map may look substantially different in-game even where the regional arrangement is familiar.

- Fully voiced cutscenes
- Expanded character dialogue
- Symphonic orchestral music
- Reworked camera and movement controls
These are confirmed presentation and interaction changes, not evidence of a larger overworld. A redesigned route, denser scenery or additional dialogue could affect how the world feels without changing its total area.

Release date, platform and file size
Switch 2 exclusive launch
Nintendo’s product information lists the remake exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, with a release date of November 5, 2026. A selectable physical edition is also listed. There is no listed Nintendo Switch or other-platform version in the supplied product information.
Estimated storage requirement
Nintendo Australia lists an estimated game file size of 27GB for 2026. The U.S. store page warns that download-size information may not be final at preorder time, so 27GB should be treated as an estimate rather than a guaranteed final installation size. File size is not a reliable proxy for world-map dimensions: voiced audio, high-resolution assets and cinematics can consume storage independently of playable-area size.
How to interpret future map claims
- Look for a Nintendo measurement. A square-area figure, dimensions, scale bar or stated traversal distance would be the clearest confirmation.
- Separate artwork from gameplay. Ask whether a source is showing a decorative illustration, a full overworld map, or an in-game navigation screen.
- Check what is being measured. “World size” might mean the continuous overworld, all connected interiors, dungeon floors, or the total area accessible during the story.
- Require a stated method. Community estimates based on character speed, loading boundaries or video footage should be labeled estimates and should not be presented as Nintendo’s figure.
What remains unknown
- The remake’s total playable area
- Whether the overworld is physically larger than the 1998 version
- Exact distances between regions
- How many landmarks shown in the illustration are explorable
- Whether new routes or regions have been added
Until Nintendo publishes those details or the finished game can be measured directly, the defensible answer to “How big is the Ocarina of Time remake map?” is that its exact size is unknown. The official reveal confirms a recognizable Hyrule arrangement, not a numerical expansion.
