Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo Switch 2 keeps the original adventure’s overall structure but adds targeted side content, modern movement, expanded dialogue and selective dungeon redesigns. It is scheduled to launch on November 5, 2026. Preview coverage confirms a new Castle Town bug quest, harder and more gradual shooting challenges, a substantially revised Forest Temple, and a new Threads of Time quest log.

What is new in the Ocarina of Time remake?

The remake is not a new campaign or a wholesale reimagining. The familiar story, world progression and major adventure beats remain, while Nintendo has added activities and quality-of-life systems around them. The clearest additions so far are a small Castle Town side quest, Fairy Messages that provide hints, the Threads of Time quest log, and movement options that were not available in the original Nintendo 64 release.

A Castle Town bug-catching quest

A character at the Castle Town potion shop is worried about a bug. Link can catch it and return it to the shopkeeper, who rewards him with an empty bottle. After the request is complete, the character offers to fill that bottle with a healing red potion. The bottle can apparently be kept, making this more than a one-off dialogue scene: it adds another useful item to Link’s inventory and a small optional errand in the town.

Fairy Messages and Threads of Time

Fairy Messages are hidden around Hyrule. Finding them can reveal hints about secrets and dungeon clues, giving exploration a more explicit reward without replacing discovery. Nintendo has also added the Threads of Time quest log, which records objectives and helps players track optional requests and story threads that could otherwise be easy to forget.

  • This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
  • The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.

Are the minigames harder?

Yes, but the changes are not simply a universal difficulty increase. Hands-on reports describe both a tougher target-shooting variant and a redesigned shooting gallery that builds difficulty progressively.

Activity Original-style behavior Remake change reported in previews
Target shooting Standard timing and target patterns A variant gives players considerably less time to hit targets.
Shooting gallery Players could be dropped into the hardest pattern early Difficulty now ramps up across stages instead of starting at the toughest pattern.

The result should give experienced players a sharper challenge while making the gallery less abrupt for newcomers. The exact reward structure and complete range of patterns have not been confirmed before launch.

What changed in the Forest Temple?

The Forest Temple receives some of the remake’s most concrete structural changes. Preview coverage describes alterations to hazards, enemy encounters, Poe Sister fights and navigation rather than a completely new dungeon.

  • The central bottomless pit is replaced by an acid pool that damages Link.
  • Two Stalfos appear after the first one is defeated, changing the rhythm of that combat encounter.
  • Poe Sister fights have been changed, although the full details of every encounter are not yet established.
  • A lift provides a shortcut through the dungeon.
  • The old map corridor has been removed.
  • The western and eastern halves are visually separated with red and blue carpeting, windows and views of the sky.

These edits appear designed to make the dungeon easier to read while preserving its identity. The acid pool creates a different form of pressure from an instant bottomless-pit fall, while the lift reduces backtracking. Because the reports cover selected sections, the final version could contain additional changes elsewhere in the temple or in other dungeons.

Does Link finally have a jump button?

Yes. The remake adds a dedicated jump button, along with dashing and swimming improvements. Those options give Link more direct control over traversal than the original’s largely context-sensitive movement. Previews also mention gyro aiming, smoother item menus and fewer loading screens. Together, these changes address moment-to-moment friction without changing the basic puzzle-and-exploration formula.

Controls and quality-of-life changes

  • Jump: Link can perform an intentional jump rather than relying only on contextual leaps.
  • Dash: Faster movement makes Hyrule traversal and repositioning more responsive.
  • Swimming: Water movement is described as smoother.
  • Gyro aiming: Motion controls can assist with aiming-based activities.
  • Item menus: Switching equipment is streamlined compared with the original interface.
  • Loading: Fewer loading screens create more continuous movement between areas.

How much new dialogue and lore is included?

Castle Town NPC interactions are substantially expanded. The additional conversations give the remake more room to explain Hyrule’s institutions and history. In Zelda Dungeon’s hands-on report, Professor Shakashi describes the Sheikah this way: “If the royal family are the light of Hyrule, then the Sheikah are the shadows that rise up behind our foes. If the King wishes it, the Sheikah see to it that any enemy of Hyrule disappears without a trace.”

That passage adds political and historical context around the Sheikah, but it should not be read as confirmation that the remake changes the central storyline. The evidence so far points to deeper optional conversations and lore rather than a replacement plot.

Release date and announced extras

Nintendo has announced the remake for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. Nintendo’s September Direct recap also lists Zelda Notes support, Link and Zelda amiibo, and a Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2, Pro Controller and carry case. The reports do not establish final pricing, regional availability or whether every listed accessory launches in every market.

What remains unknown before launch

The current findings come from previews of selected sections. The complete late-game quest list, changes to every dungeon, final performance and full regional product details have not been verified. Claims about additional unseen side quests or comprehensive quest coverage should therefore be treated as provisional until the finished game is available.
