1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShielded Zcash addresses (z-addresses) hide shielded addresses and transaction values from public blockchain observers; transparent addresses (t-addresses) publish those details on-chain. That distinction applies to the entire transaction path. A shielded-to-shielded payment offers the strongest on-chain privacy, while a transfer between a transparent and a shielded pool still exposes information on its transparent side.
Shielding is not the same as making every part of a payment anonymous. Fees remain visible, and transaction metadata, wallet behavior, network traffic, or information you disclose can create links. The practical privacy result depends on the address types used, the wallet’s defaults, and how the transaction is created and broadcast.

What is the difference between shielded and transparent Zcash?
Transparent addresses work broadly like public blockchain addresses: the address and the value associated with a transfer are recorded in a way that outside observers can inspect. Zcash documentation summarizes this directly: “Transparent addresses work similarly to Bitcoin addresses and do not offer privacy for users.” Anyone analyzing the chain can follow those addresses, see incoming and outgoing values, and examine the transaction history attached to them.
Shielded addresses use Zcash’s privacy pool. The chain records a valid transaction, but the shielded addresses and values sent to or from them are not publicly visible. Network consensus can still verify that the transaction follows the protocol without publishing the payment’s participants and amount to every observer.

The important qualification is the transaction path. A shielded endpoint does not make a mixed transaction completely private. Zcash’s glossary states that a transaction containing both shielded and transparent addresses “only protects the data associated with the shielded address.” A transparent input or output remains observable even when the other side is shielded.
What can a blockchain observer see?
The four common paths have different privacy properties. The table describes on-chain visibility, not protection against every form of identification or network monitoring.
| Transaction path | Publicly visible on-chain | Privacy meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent to transparent | Transparent addresses, values, and the public transaction record | Payment details are publicly inspectable, with visibility comparable in broad terms to a transparent Bitcoin-style transfer. |
| Shielded to shielded | The transaction record and fee; shielded addresses and value are concealed | Strongest on-chain privacy among these paths, although metadata and network information can still create correlations. |
| Transparent to shielded (shielding) | Information associated with the transparent input or sender side | The destination in the shielded pool is protected, but the transparent source and its value remain visible. |
| Shielded to transparent (deshielding) | Information associated with the transparent output or recipient side | The shielded source is protected, but the public destination and amount remain visible. |
Consequently, a payment is not “fully private” merely because one endpoint uses a z-address. The public side can reveal timing, amount, and a visible address, allowing observers to connect activity with external information.

Transparent-to-transparent payments
Both endpoints remain in the transparent pool. The sender’s address, recipient’s address, value, fee, and transaction history are available to chain observers. Replacing an address after every payment does not solve this problem: Zcash’s wallet user-experience guidance warns that repeatedly generating new transparent addresses can create a false sense of privacy. Amounts, timing, and other publicly recorded details can still be analyzed, and any address reused or linked outside the chain exposes its associated history.

Shielding: transparent to shielded
Shielding moves value from a transparent address into the shielded pool. The transparent input is visible, including the public side’s address and value. Once funds are in the shielded pool, subsequent shielded activity can protect the address and value information from ordinary chain inspection. The initial public deposit remains part of the observable history, however.
Shielded-to-shielded payments
Both sender and recipient use shielded addresses. Public observers can see that a valid transaction occurred and can see its fee, but not the shielded addresses or transferred value. This is the transaction type that best matches the goal of keeping payment participants and amount out of the public ledger view.
Deshielding: shielded to transparent
Deshielding sends value from the shielded pool to a transparent address. The destination and amount on the transparent side become public. The source inside the shielded pool is not exposed as a normal public address, but the timing, amount, recipient, and any information shared by the parties can still make the payment easier to associate with a person or organization.

Are Zcash shielded addresses private?
They provide substantially more on-chain confidentiality than transparent addresses, but “private” has a defined scope. Shielded addresses and values are concealed from routine blockchain viewing; they are not automatically hidden from every participant, device, service, or network observer.

Fees remain visible
Transaction fees are publicly visible even for shielded payments. Official privacy guidance recommends letting a privacy-focused wallet select fees instead of manually choosing unusual values, because a distinctive fee can add a linkable clue. A concealed payment amount does not make the fee disappear from the public transaction record.
Metadata can identify a payment
Transaction IDs, timing, amounts learned from another source, counterparties, invoices, exchange records, screenshots, and payment disclosures can all provide correlation points. Sharing a viewing key or other proof may let a third party inspect information that is not public by default. Before disclosing anything, decide whether the recipient should see a single payment, an address’s history, or broader wallet activity.
Network traffic can reveal activity
Zcash’s peer-to-peer network uses IP addresses for node communication; the protocol does not itself obfuscate a user’s IP address. An observer with suitable network visibility may correlate when a wallet broadcasts a transaction with other information, including activity involving both shielded and transparent pools. Shielding the ledger fields therefore does not by itself provide network-layer anonymity.

Wallet behavior affects the result
Transaction construction, fee selection, address selection, change handling, and broadcast timing can leak information. Zcash’s wallet implementation guidance puts the principle plainly: “The privacy provided by a Zcash transaction depends on the information leaked in the creation of that transaction and the process of it being broadcast for inclusion in the block chain.” A technically shielded payment can still be operationally revealing if the wallet or surrounding workflow creates a distinctive pattern.

Wallet support and address defaults
Before receiving or sending shielded funds, verify that the wallet actually supports shielded transactions. Wallets differ in whether they support z-addresses, shield only when asked, shield automatically, or support transparent addresses only. Zcash consumer guidance specifically recommends checking for “shielded by default” behavior when confidentiality is the objective.
Questions to ask about a wallet
- Does it create and spend shielded addresses, or only transparent addresses?
- Is shielding enabled by default, optional, or unavailable?
- Can it send directly to a shielded recipient without first exposing a transparent intermediate payment?
- How does it select fees and handle change?
- Does it explain what information a viewing key or payment disclosure will reveal?
- Can it receive a unified address and choose an appropriate receiver type?
A wallet that advertises Zcash support may still support only transparent flows. Confirm the specific feature in its current documentation and test the address type before moving funds that require confidentiality.
Unified addresses
Unified addresses combine multiple receiver types into one address format. A compatible wallet can select a receiver it supports and may use autoshielding to move transparent funds into the shielded pool. This improves usability, but it is not a guarantee that every wallet or recipient handles all receiver types identically. The sender and recipient still need compatible implementations, and the resulting privacy depends on the actual path used.
Long-term storage and operational constraints
Official wallet guidance recommends holding funds as shielded for the long term and auto-shielding transparent funds by default where supported. Real-world services may still require transparent deposits or withdrawals. ZIP 320 specifies a transparent-source-only address type for situations where an operational flow cannot accept shielded inputs. Such a format describes a compatibility requirement, not a privacy upgrade; using it leaves the relevant transparent side publicly visible.

Selective disclosure: proving information without publishing everything
Shielded data is not inherently unauditable. Zcash viewing keys provide read access without spending authority, allowing a holder to let an auditor, accountant, or other party inspect permitted shielded information. Treat a viewing key as a sensitive read credential: anyone who receives it may be able to examine more history than a single payment, depending on the key type and wallet implementation.
Payment disclosures are a more targeted mechanism. ZIP 311 describes a payment-disclosure specification that can let a sender prove selected details of a shielded transfer, such as the fact and parameters of a payment, without making every shielded transaction public. The ZIP 311 page identifies the specification as Draft, so availability and exact behavior depend on current wallet support. Do not promise a particular disclosure workflow until the wallet documents that feature.
Selective disclosure creates a choice rather than removing privacy. Share only the minimum evidence required, through a channel that does not expose unrelated addresses, amounts, or transaction history. Keep in mind that a recipient can copy, forward, or combine disclosed information with public and off-chain records.
Security differences beyond blockchain visibility
Address privacy and account security are related but separate. Shielded cryptography protects particular ledger fields from public observation; it does not protect a stolen seed phrase, compromised device, malicious wallet software, or an unsafe backup.
- Key and seed handling: Anyone who obtains spending keys can control funds regardless of whether the address is shielded or transparent. Store recovery material offline where practical and protect it from screenshots, cloud sync, and phishing.
- Wallet software: Use maintained software from a source you can verify. A wallet that constructs a transaction incorrectly, mishandles change, or broadcasts through a revealing service can weaken practical privacy.
- Recipient verification: Confirm the exact address or unified-address destination through a trusted channel. A private transaction sent to the wrong recipient is still irreversible in the ordinary sense of blockchain transfers.
- Device and network hygiene: Malware, browser extensions, compromised operating systems, and monitored networks can expose activity before ledger privacy helps.
- Record keeping: Keep private accounting records separate from publicly identifiable addresses when possible. Invoices, exchange statements, and payment messages can connect shielded activity to a real identity.
Which address type should you use?
| Your requirement | Prefer | Reason and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Publicly auditable payments or compatibility with a transparent-only service | Transparent address | The address and value are visible, which simplifies public verification but exposes the payment history. |
| Keep sender, recipient, and amount out of ordinary chain searches | Shielded-to-shielded transaction | It conceals shielded addresses and value; fees, metadata, and network observations remain possible clues. |
| Move an existing transparent balance into private use | Shielding transaction, followed by shielded activity | The initial transparent input remains public; later shielded transfers have stronger on-chain privacy. |
| Withdraw to a service that accepts only transparent funds | Deshielding transaction | The transparent destination and amount are public, even though the source in the shielded pool is not shown as a public address. |
| Provide an auditor or customer with proof of a payment | Selective disclosure, where supported | Use a viewing key or payment-disclosure feature with the narrowest scope; ZIP 311’s specification is marked Draft. |
Practical checklist for a more private Zcash payment
- Identify the required privacy level. Decide whether the recipient, amount, address history, or only public auditability matters.
- Check wallet capabilities. Confirm shielded support, shielded-by-default settings, unified-address handling, fee selection, and disclosure controls.
- Choose the transaction path deliberately. Use shielded-to-shielded when both parties need on-chain confidentiality; recognize the public side of any shielding or deshielding flow.
- Review the destination before signing. Verify whether the wallet is sending to a shielded receiver, a transparent receiver, or a unified address that may resolve to either.
- Let the wallet choose a normal fee. Avoid manually selecting unusual fees that could become a distinctive fingerprint.
- Limit what you disclose. Do not casually share transaction IDs, amounts, counterparties, viewing keys, or payment disclosures. Share the smallest proof that satisfies the recipient or auditor.
- Consider broadcast privacy. Understand how the wallet connects to the network and that ordinary node communication can expose an IP address.
- Protect keys and backups. Ledger privacy cannot recover funds or preserve confidentiality after a seed phrase or device is compromised.
Version and implementation notes
The address and value-pool documentation referenced for this comparison is identified as version 6.12.2, while the protocol specification result is identified as version 2025.6.3-179-g6025f3 (NU6.1). Wallet interfaces and feature support can change independently of those documents. ZIP 311’s payment-disclosure page is marked Draft, and ZIP 320 documents a transparent-source-only address format for compatibility cases. Check the current wallet and protocol documentation before relying on a particular receiver type, autoshielding behavior, or disclosure workflow.
The core decision remains straightforward: transparent addresses maximize public inspectability, while shielded-to-shielded payments maximize protection of addresses and values from ordinary blockchain observers. Neither option removes the need for careful wallet operation, controlled disclosure, and attention to network and metadata leaks.
