Zcash’s NU7 upgrade has two October milestones, but neither is a confirmed mainnet activation: public-testnet activation is expected on October 6, 2026, and October 20 is the planned point to decide whether to proceed and set a mainnet activation height. November 5 is currently a target for mainnet, not a locked-in date.
What happens on each date?

The Zcash Foundation’s October 2 announcement says no mainnet activation height has been set. The community timeline supplies the November 5 target, so it should not be read as a confirmed launch date.
What is changing in NU7?
Shorter target block spacing, with issuance adjustments
The Foundation says NU7 is planned to reduce target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. It also says the block subsidy and remaining halving intervals will be adjusted so daily ZEC issuance stays unchanged. Faster blocks therefore do not, by themselves, mean three times as much ZEC is issued per day.
A change to transaction fees
The Foundation describes a Network Sustainability Mechanism that directs 60% of transaction fees into a reserve while miners retain 40%. A small, predictable portion of the reserve is reissued per block. These are the mechanism’s stated design details, not a change to the daily-issuance claim above.

Limits on shielded transactions
The release candidate sets limits of 330 Orchard or Ironwood actions, 300 Sapling inputs and outputs, and a shared pool budget of 330; it permits no new Sprout JoinSplits. The Foundation says the limits more than double Orchard protocol throughput and reduce worst-case light-wallet sync load by about 37%. Those performance figures are the Foundation’s estimates, not independent measurements.
Who needs to pay attention now?
Public-testnet operators
Upgrade before the expected activation at height 4,465,026 and report problems so testnet behavior can inform the October decision. Use the current official release instructions rather than treating a release-candidate announcement as a general installation guide.

Mainnet operators
The Foundation says mainnet operators do not need to act yet: no mainnet activation height has been set, and Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 is a release candidate, not a stable release.
Miners, pools, and infrastructure developers
Miners and pools should review the release notes before testing because the candidate changes block-template and coinbase behavior. Wallet, indexer, full-node, and block-explorer developers should validate compatibility on testnet; the announcement notes database, library API, and RPC changes that can affect infrastructure.

Everyday wallet users
The community timeline says the upgrade introduces no new transaction format and is not expected to significantly affect wallets in ordinary use. The larger near-term compatibility burden is on infrastructure, not a required wallet migration for users.
What the Zebra release candidate means for operators
Some operational details are specific to Zebra and should not be generalized to every Zcash client. Zebra’s state database moves to format v29. A compatible v28 database is migrated on first start, and downgrading is not supported. Zebra operators who want a recovery path are advised to back up the v28 state before starting the candidate. Consult current official release notes before making changes.

The community timeline also says NU7 disables v4 transactions. It states: “New transaction formats do not appear in this network upgrade!” That does not remove the need for infrastructure developers to test compatibility with the release candidate.

Block spacing is not the same thing as an exchange’s deposit policy. Each exchange sets its own confirmation requirements, and the cited Foundation announcement and community timeline do not establish a universal NU7 rule or prescribe a new confirmation count.
