Zcash’s NU7 upgrade was scheduled to activate on public Testnet on October 6, 2026, at block height 4,465,026. That was still a future event as of October 5. November 5 was a proposed Mainnet date, not a confirmed activation: the decision and setting of a Mainnet activation height were scheduled for October 20, after Testnet experience.
When is NU7 activating on Testnet and Mainnet?
The schedule distinguishes a dated Testnet activation from a conditional Mainnet target. The Zcash Community Forum’s timeline gives the planned Mainnet date and the decision point; the Zcash Foundation’s release announcement specifies the Testnet height and advises Testnet operators to upgrade before it.

What does the NU7 proposal change?
NU7 is a proposed Zcash network upgrade. Draft ZIP 259 describes several changes, so its scope should be understood as proposal language rather than a guarantee about a finalized Mainnet deployment.

Shorter target block spacing
The draft proposes reducing target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Those are protocol target parameters, not measured confirmation times or evidence of a particular performance improvement.
Shielded action limits and issuance rules
The proposal includes shielded action limits described under ZIP 218, as well as Network Sustainability Mechanism rules. These are separate parts of the proposal; the 25-second target does not itself describe either one. The ZIP index provides the broader proposal context.

Version 4 transactions and Sprout funds
The draft proposes disabling version 4 transactions while keeping version 5 and version 6 valid. ZIP 259 says Sprout transfers can only be represented by version 4 transactions. If the rule activates as proposed, Sprout-pool funds would become unspendable through ordinary transactions. That is a conditional consequence of the proposal, not a statement that funds had already been frozen as of October 5, 2026.
What should Zcash node operators do?
Testnet operators
The Zcash Foundation described Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 as the first release candidate supporting NU7 on public Testnet, with activation expected at height 4,465,026 around October 6. It advised Testnet operators to upgrade before activation. The announcement identifies the software as a release candidate, not stable software, and notes that Testnet-specific configuration overrides and mining-template behavior may affect setup. Operators should follow the release notes in the announcement rather than assume a default configuration is sufficient.

Mainnet operators
As of the Foundation’s October 2 announcement, Mainnet operators did not need to act yet because no Mainnet activation height had been set. The announcement stated: “Mainnet operators do not need to do anything yet: no Mainnet activation height has been set, and this is a release candidate, not a stable release.” Zcash’s NU7 overview says the upgrade may not be supported by zcashd and directs operators toward Zebra preparation. That general preparation guidance does not turn the November target into a finalized Mainnet instruction.
