Yuzvendra Chahal has retired from first-class cricket, effective immediately, but has not announced an end to his playing career. In a statement reported on 2 October 2026, he said he still hopes to earn another India opportunity in One-Day and T20 cricket. That is his stated ambition—not a selection announcement.
What Chahal announced
Chahal announced his retirement from first-class cricket on 2 October 2026, with the decision effective immediately, according to Hindustan Times. The announcement was made on Instagram, the newspaper reported. It concerns the first-class game, not all cricket: Chahal said he wants to continue pursuing opportunities in India’s One-Day and T20 formats.

Hindustan Times reproduced his words: “The hunger to play for my country is still very much alive. I believe I have the cricket left in me, and I will give everything I have to earn another opportunity in the One-Day and T20 formats.” He also wrote, “But I AM NOT DONE YET,” according to that report.

Can Chahal play for India again?
He has said that he wants to. No future India selection or recall was announced in the reports, and his statement does not establish what selectors will decide. His stated aim is another opportunity in ODI and T20 cricket; it is not a promise that one will follow.

Why the Test dream remained unfulfilled
Chahal said a Test cap had long been a dream, while expressing contentment with his first-class journey. The reports say he never played a Test for India. Retiring from first-class cricket closes that red-ball chapter, but does not mean he has retired from ODI or T20 cricket.
