The Japanese Official Card Game (OCG) followed in 1999, after a fictional card game became the story’s focus. That distinction explains what the 30-year milestone actually marks: the start of the series, not the launch of the physical game.
When did Yu-Gi-Oh! start?
Kazuki Takahashi’s Yu-Gi-Oh! manga debuted in Japan’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 1996, according to publisher VIZ. The physical Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Official Card Game arrived in 1999, according to Nippon.com. Those dates refer to different milestones: the manga began the franchise, and the OCG brought its fictional card duels into the real world.

So the headline’s “30 years ago” refers to the manga’s 1996 debut. It should not be read as saying that the trading card game launched that year. A specialist retrospective identifies February 4, 1999, as the OCG’s start date, while Nippon.com also dates it to 1999. The sources cited here do not establish a precise Western TCG launch date.
How a card game took over the manga
The early manga was broader than its best-known duels: Yugi encountered and played different kinds of games. Nippon.com’s 2023 account says that the card game called Magic & Wizards in the story—and Duel Monsters in the English translation—caught readers’ interest and became the central focus. The same account says the series had teetered on cancellation before becoming a major Shonen Jump hit; that is Nippon.com’s retrospective, rather than a claim attributed here directly to Takahashi or the publisher.

Takahashi’s own description, as quoted by Nippon.com from the afterword to the manga’s first collected volume, captures the contrast: “Yu-Gi-Oh feels like a manga about a card game, but at its heart it is really a school drama.” The card duels became its signature, but they grew out of a story with a wider setting and concerns.
From fictional duels to a real-world franchise
Once the story’s card game became its center, the idea could live beyond the page. VIZ describes the manga as the origin of a real-world card game, video games, and multiple anime series. Konami’s current product guide presents the franchise across manga, television, and games, alongside the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game.
The cultural reach is measurable in several ways, but the figures need their dates and definitions. Nippon.com reported in July 2023 that more than 40 million issues, including ebooks, had been printed across the original manga and its spin-offs. Konami’s guide cites more than 25 billion Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG units sold in a passage discussing content planned for 2022 and beyond. That is the figure and context on the page—not a newly reported 2026 total.
Those milestones support calling Yu-Gi-Oh! a major multimedia and card-game franchise. “Changed the world” is a rhetorical description, not a measurable claim established by those figures alone.

What the modern Yu-Gi-Oh! card game is
Konami’s current English-language guide describes TCG matches as two opponents playing Monster, Spell, and Trap Cards. It says decks contain 40 to 60 cards. The official rules page describes the goal as defeating opposing monsters and reducing the opponent’s Life Points to zero. These are descriptions of current official guidance, not evidence that today’s rules are identical to the first 1999 OCG rules.
Konami lists several ways to get cards and play: booster packs, structure decks, collectible tins, and accessories such as sleeves, game mats, card cases, and portfolios. Its guide says booster cards are randomly assorted; a structure deck includes a full deck and a guide.
