You’ve Got One Chance to Try World of Warcraft: Forever Without a Subscription Before Launch

Yes—Blizzard has announced a public World of Warcraft: Forever stress test on October 19, 2026, and anyone can join without a subscription, Game Time, invitation, or beta access. It is the clearest pre-launch opportunity to play Forever at no cost. The test is temporary, and every character, name, and guild created on its servers will be deleted afterward.

When the free Forever stress test starts

The public stress test is scheduled for October 19, 2026. Blizzard lists these regional start times:

Region Start time
North America 2:00 p.m. PDT, October 19
Europe 19:00 CEST, October 19
Korea 06:00 KST, October 20
Taiwan 05:00 CST, October 20

The listed window is not guaranteed to end at a fixed hour. Blizzard says it may close earlier or continue later depending on testing needs, so install the client before the announced start and join as soon as the realm is available.

This event is separate from the beta. The beta’s last full testing day is October 21, but beta participation is not needed for the public stress test.

Who can enter without paying

Blizzard’s announcement says: “Anyone can take part and no subscription, Game Time, invitation, or beta access is required.” You therefore do not need to buy a subscription, add Game Time, receive a beta invite, or obtain a friend’s code for the October 19 event.

The offer applies to the stress-test period only. It is not a permanent free edition of Forever, and test access does not convert into ongoing game time after the event.

How to install the stress-test client

  1. Open the Battle.net desktop app and allow it to finish updating.
  2. Select World of Warcraft in the game list.
  3. Open the Game Version menu above the Play button.
  4. Under In Development, choose World of Warcraft: Forever Stress Test, then select Install.
  5. When the test begins, select Play and choose an available test realm.
  6. Create a new test character and enter the game.

These are test servers, so expect queues, disconnects, maintenance, or other instability while Blizzard measures capacity. Your test character is not a launch character.

What happens to your character and progress

Blizzard states that “all created characters, names, and guilds will be wiped from the Stress Test servers” after the event. The wipe prepares the game for name reservations, which Blizzard says begin on October 27. Do not spend the stress test assuming that a character name, guild, inventory, achievements, or other progress will survive.

When Forever launches and what normal access requires

World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled for global launch on November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST. Blizzard’s product information says Forever access is included with the existing World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time model. In other words, the normal post-launch route requires active paid access; the October stress test is an exception rather than a change to that model.

Access route Cost Date or window Eligibility Installation Does progress persist? Continues afterward?
Public stress test No subscription or Game Time required October 19, 2026; end time may vary Anyone; no invitation or beta access required Battle.net, Game Version > In Development No; characters, names, and guilds are wiped No
Normal launch access World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time From November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. PST Players with eligible paid access Regular World of Warcraft installation in Battle.net Yes, subject to the game’s normal rules Yes while paid access remains active
Invite-A-Friend Launch Code No subscription or Game Time for the invitee during the exception November 4–11, 2026 Invitee receives an eligible code from a qualifying pre-purchase Use Battle.net and the instructions supplied with the code Not stated for access beyond the code window No; the exception ends November 11
Ordinary World of Warcraft Free Trial No active subscription or recurring Game Time Ongoing starter-account offer Accounts revert to trial status Standard World of Warcraft account Trial progress follows trial rules Only trial content

A second no-subscription route during launch week

From November 4 through November 11, 2026, an eligible Invite-A-Friend Launch Code tied to a qualifying pre-purchase can let an invitee play without a subscription or Game Time. This is a separate, limited exception—not the same event as the October 19 stress test. The code must be valid and eligible, and access ends with the stated launch-week window.

Why the regular Free Trial is not a confirmed Forever trial

Blizzard’s general World of Warcraft Free Trial allows accounts without an active subscription or recurring Game Time to revert to trial status, with playable content through level 20. The cited trial information does not state that Forever is included in that starter-account offering. Accordingly, the ordinary level-20 trial should not be advertised as confirmed Forever access.

Practical checklist for October 19

  • Update Battle.net before the test opens.
  • Locate the Forever Stress Test entry under In Development and install it early.
  • Check your local equivalent of the listed regional start time.
  • Expect queues or interruptions because this is a capacity test.
  • Keep expectations temporary: every test character, name, and guild will be wiped.
  • If you want to continue after launch, plan on a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time, unless you qualify for the November 4–11 Invite-A-Friend exception.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Forever for free after the October 19 stress test?

No. The stress test is temporary. Normal access after launch uses a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time, with the separate Invite-A-Friend exception running November 4–11, 2026.
