Try another video, then open YouTube in a private browser window or a different app, switch networks, and test another device. Those comparisons usually point to the right fix without resetting your router or device.
Find out what is failing
Run these quick comparisons before changing settings. Treat each result as a clue, not a definitive diagnosis.

YouTube recommends testing another connection and another supported device when diagnosing playback trouble. YouTube playback troubleshooting
Try the lowest-risk fixes first
- Reload and compare videos. Reload the page or close and reopen the app. Test a second video from another channel to find out whether the issue is video-specific.
- Test a different viewing environment. On a computer, try a private or incognito window, then another current browser. On a phone or tablet, compare the YouTube app with YouTube in a mobile browser.
- Switch networks. Try Wi-Fi instead of cellular, or cellular instead of Wi-Fi. Use a trusted hotspot or another network if available.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy. Retest without it. A VPN can alter routing or location checks, but it is not a general playback fix.
- Restart and update. Close the browser or app, restart the device, and install available browser, app, and operating-system updates.
- Clear the relevant site or app cache. Use the platform steps below; start with cache rather than deleting app data when that option exists.
- If playback starts but buffers, lower video quality. This can reduce the data rate needed while you investigate the connection.
Fix YouTube in a computer browser
Check private browsing and extensions
Open the same video in a private or incognito window. If it works there, an extension, cookie, or browser-profile setting may be responsible. Disable extensions one at a time and retest, paying particular attention to ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, download helpers, antivirus browser add-ons, and video-enhancement tools. Private browsing does not prove that an extension is the cause, and a failure there does not rule out a network, browser, device, or service problem. Avoid installing unofficial “YouTube fixer” extensions or scripts.
Update the browser and clear YouTube site data
YouTube identifies current Chrome, Firefox, and Safari versions as supported browser options and recommends keeping the operating system up to date. YouTube system requirements
Update the browser, restart it, and close tabs or programs you do not need. If the error continues, clear YouTube’s cached files and cookies using your browser’s site-data controls, then reopen the browser and test again. Menu names differ among Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and operating-system versions, so use the instructions for the browser you have rather than following a one-size-fits-all menu path. Clearing cookies may sign you out of websites.
Check network settings only if the failure is network-specific
If YouTube works on another network but not on your usual one, check whether a workplace, school, hotel, parental-control, antivirus, or firewall filter is restricting streaming. On home Wi-Fi, restart the modem and router, move closer to the router, and test another device on the same network. Do not change DNS as a first step or repeatedly reset router settings. If you use a manually configured DNS service, temporarily returning to your normal provider’s settings can help test whether resolution is involved; record the original settings so you can restore them.
Fix the YouTube app on Android
- Force-close YouTube, reopen it, and test another video.
- Update YouTube in Google Play and install available Android system updates.
- Test Wi-Fi against cellular data, if your plan and signal allow.
- Clear the app cache: open Settings, then Apps or Apps & notifications, select YouTube, open Storage & cache, and tap Clear cache. Labels vary by device and Android version.
- Restart the device and test playback again.
- If the problem persists, reinstall YouTube if your device allows it. Clear cache before trying a more disruptive clear-storage or data option, which can reset app settings or sign you out.

If YouTube works in a mobile browser but not the app, focus on app updates, cache, installation, or the app’s account session. Battery Saver or Data Saver settings may also affect background or data behavior on some devices; temporarily testing without them can help identify a device-specific restriction.
Fix YouTube on iPhone or iPad
- Force-close YouTube, reopen it, and try another video.
- Update YouTube in the App Store and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Restart the device and compare Wi-Fi with cellular data, where available.
- Try the same video in a mobile browser to see whether the issue is limited to the app.
- If the app alone continues to fail, delete and reinstall YouTube, then sign in and test again. Reinstalling may remove local app data and require you to sign in again.
Fix YouTube on a smart TV, streaming device, or console
- Exit YouTube and reopen the app. If the app offers it, sign out and back in.
- Restart the TV, streaming device, or console. For a full power cycle, unplug it, wait several seconds, then reconnect it.
- Install available YouTube app updates and system or firmware updates.
- Check whether other apps on the device can use the internet. Test the YouTube app on another device using the same Wi-Fi.
- If possible, move the device closer to the router or test another trusted network.
- Compare with another playback method, such as casting from a phone or connecting a laptop by HDMI.

If the TV has no picture but other device functions work, distinguish an app failure from an HDMI, display, or audio issue. Older TVs or streaming devices may no longer receive the app or system updates they need. A factory reset is a last resort: it can erase accounts, network settings, installed apps, and other device configuration.
When videos buffer or only HD and 4K fail
If the video starts but repeatedly buffers, open the player’s Settings, choose Quality, and temporarily select a lower resolution. If lower quality plays reliably, raise it gradually to see where the interruptions return.
YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed recommendations are shown below. They are guidance, not guarantees; the connection must sustain delivery, and Wi-Fi interference, congestion, routing, other traffic, or device performance can still cause buffering. A speed-test result is a snapshot and does not guarantee steady delivery to YouTube. If even low-resolution video will not start, lowering quality alone is unlikely to address the underlying fault.

Match the error or symptom to the next check
“An error occurred,” “Playback error,” or “Something went wrong”
These messages do not identify one cause. Reload, try another video, update and restart the browser or app, test private browsing, temporarily disable extensions, clear the relevant cache and cookies, and compare another network. “This video is unavailable”
If other videos play, the affected title may have been removed or made private, may require sign-in or payment, may be restricted by age or location, or may not be available through the current device or playback method. Check whether the message appears only on that video before troubleshooting the whole network.
Payment or licensing message
A message such as “This video requires payment” is generally an access or entitlement issue, not ordinary buffering. Check that you are signed in to the account that purchased or rented the content and that the title is available in your location and on your device. Black screen or audio without a picture
If sound plays but the picture is black, test another browser or device and temporarily disable extensions. The cause may involve browser rendering, graphics, a display connection, or an app rather than internet speed. If there is neither picture nor sound, follow the broader app, browser, and network checks. On a TV or external player, also test another input or playback method.

Green or distorted picture
A green or distorted image points more toward rendering, graphics, app, or device compatibility than a basic bandwidth shortage. Update the browser, app, and device software, then test the same video on another browser or device.
Live streams fail but regular videos work
Live playback can be more sensitive to connection instability, congestion, and stream-side conditions. YouTube notes that lower broadcast delay can increase playback interruptions and that network congestion can affect live programming even when the connection seems strong. An embedded video fails but YouTube works
Open the video directly on YouTube. If it plays there, the issue may be the website’s embed configuration, the video owner’s embedding setting, privacy controls, or third-party cookie restrictions—not YouTube playback generally.
Could YouTube be down?
One failed video or device is not enough to establish an outage. Test several videos, another device, and another network. If the same problem follows YouTube across devices and connections, a broader service issue becomes more plausible; if only one title fails, availability or restrictions are more likely. Service status can change quickly, so check YouTube’s official updates or support channels for current information rather than relying on an old outage report.
If the problem persists, send a useful report
Before reporting the issue, note the device model, operating-system version, YouTube app or browser version, network type, exact error text, and whether the failure affects one video or all videos. Also record whether the same video works in another browser or app, on another device, or on another network, and whether a VPN, proxy, or browser extension is enabled.
