Choose equipment for the kind of video you want to make and the place you will record it; then improve the specific weak point—often sound, lighting, planning or editing. YouTube Help puts it simply: “Often, the best equipment is the one you have at hand.”
Choose a camera that fits the video
Start with the production goal, your budget and how much portability and control you need. A phone can be enough to begin: YouTube Help says, “All you need to get started on YouTube is a mobile device.” A dedicated camera is an option when its features solve a real need, not a prerequisite for quality.

Set up a phone shot
For a standard 16:9 high-definition video, film horizontally. YouTube’s mobile filming tips also recommend using the rear camera when possible, disabling notifications and locking focus and exposure so the image does not shift unexpectedly in sharpness or brightness. Auto mode is the simplest place to start; manual mode gives more control if you are ready to manage the settings.
Make speech easy to hear
Microphone placement and a quiet recording space can matter more than buying a new camera. Get the microphone close to the sound you want, and reduce competing noise where practical.

Match the microphone to the shot
- Onboard microphone: Can work when the subject is close and the surroundings are quiet.
- Shotgun microphone: Can help capture natural sound from farther away.
- Wireless lavalier: Can suit a speaker who needs to move or record at a distance from the camera.
Before buying an external microphone, verify that your camera or phone supports its connection. For phone recording, keep the microphone opening unobstructed. Turn off a fan or close a window if you can; cloth or pillows can help soften sound reflected by hard surfaces. In a noisy setting, an external mic may help, but compatibility still matters.

Light the scene intentionally
A two-point setup uses a key light as the main source and a fill light to balance shadows. For close-ups, soft light can be more suitable than a harsh, direct beam. You do not have to start with dedicated lights: window daylight can illuminate an indoor scene, while outdoor shade can reduce harsh sun and dark shadows. A white card or reflector can bounce light back onto a subject. A camera-mounted light is another option when portability matters.
Choose based on the scene: close-up or wide shot, how much control you need, access to power and the light already available. YouTube’s equipment tips and mobile filming guidance describe these approaches without treating one setup as universal.

Consider whether the background and clothing fit the video.

Prepare equipment and shots before recording
A short checklist helps prevent a missing battery or untested microphone from interrupting a shoot. For a complex production, plan shots around the final edit so you capture what you actually need.
- Test the camera, lights and microphones before filming.
- Choose the resolution and other camera settings for the intended video.
- Charge devices; pack any needed backup batteries and memory cards.
- Label and pack equipment, and keep a script or talking points available.
- For a larger shoot, prepare a shot list with the framing, angle and movement for each shot. A call sheet can help coordinate the production.
- Allow time for setup. Batch filming can save time when you have several videos or segments to record.
Planning shots with the intended edit in mind can reduce unnecessary takes. For more on pre-production, see YouTube’s filming tips.
Plan the edit before the shoot
Think about the opening, ending and transitions while writing or outlining the video. Identify key moments, possible alternate takes and whether B-roll, a trailer or teasers would help. Capturing useful supporting shots during the shoot is easier than discovering later that the edit lacks them.

Choose editing software by fit
Compare editing tools against your budget, supported camera and file formats, computer requirements and the features you actually need. A beginner can start with software already on a phone or computer. Current prices, terms and device compatibility vary, so check the software maker’s current details before choosing.
Edit for the subject, then review the result
Practice with the tools and use shortcuts for tasks you repeat. Match pacing to the subject rather than applying the same rhythm to every video. After publishing, inspect audience-retention data in YouTube Studio to spot sections where viewers may be dropping off. YouTube Studio also offers trimming, end screens, and music and sound effects from its audio library; see YouTube’s editing guidance.
