For a standard landscape YouTube video, use a 16:9 canvas. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The familiar 1280 × 720 canvas is still a valid 16:9 working size when you need a smaller file. For Shorts, use 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16. Export as JPG or PNG and check the upload limit for the device you use.
Recommended YouTube thumbnail dimensions at a glance
Choose the canvas from the content type, not from the video’s playback resolution. A thumbnail can be uploaded at 4K dimensions even when the video itself is 1080p or 720p.
| Content or surface | Aspect ratio | Recommended source size | Minimum stated by YouTube | Format and limit notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular landscape video | 16:9 | 3840 × 2160 px | 640 px minimum width | JPG or PNG; mobile video uploads are limited to 2 MB and desktop video uploads to 50 MB |
| YouTube Short | 9:16 | 2160 × 3840 px | 640 px minimum height | JPG or PNG; the desktop Shorts ceiling is 50 MB, while mobile video uploads are limited to 2 MB |
| Podcast playlist | 1:1 | Not stated in the current guidance | Not stated | JPG or PNG; desktop podcast uploads can be up to 50 MB and mobile podcast uploads up to 10 MB |
The 16:9 and 3840 × 2160 figures are the current recommendations for ordinary video thumbnails. They are not a guarantee of better click-through performance; no official statistic establishes that a particular thumbnail size improves clicks.
Is YouTube thumbnail size 1280 × 720 or 3840 × 2160?
Both dimensions describe a 16:9 image, but they serve different purposes:

- 3840 × 2160: YouTube’s current recommended source resolution for video thumbnails. It gives you a high-resolution master that can be resized for other placements.
- 1280 × 720: A practical 720p working canvas in the standard 16:9 family. It remains useful when your design software, workflow or storage favors smaller files.
You do not need to enlarge a small design just to reach 3840 × 2160. Upscaling a 640 × 360 image does not create detail and can make text or edges look soft. Start at the recommended size when possible, then compress the exported JPG or PNG until it fits the upload limit.
Why a 16:9 canvas matters
A 16:9 image fills the normal landscape thumbnail frame without geometric distortion or large side bars. If you submit a different ratio, YouTube may crop it, add empty space, or make important lettering harder to read on phones and search pages.
File format, compression and upload limits
YouTube’s guidance names JPG and PNG for custom thumbnails. Use PNG when you need crisp flat graphics or transparency during editing; use JPG for photographs and designs where a smaller file is more important. A JPG quality setting around your editor’s medium-to-high range is a starting point, but inspect the actual exported file because quality scales differ between applications.
| Upload context | Video or Shorts limit | Podcast limit |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 2 MB | 10 MB |
| Desktop | 50 MB | 50 MB |
The limits vary by device and content type. If a phone rejects an otherwise valid desktop-sized file, export a JPG, reduce quality gradually, remove unnecessary metadata and verify the final byte count before trying again. Keep the image dimensions and aspect ratio unchanged while compressing.

A reliable export sequence
- Set the document to 3840 × 2160 px for a regular video, or 2160 × 3840 px for a Short.
- Design at 100% view so thin strokes and small type are evaluated at their actual pixel size.
- Export a JPG for photo-heavy art or a PNG for sharp graphic elements.
- Open the exported file outside the design application and check its pixel dimensions, file size and readability at a phone-sized preview.
- If the upload is too large, lower JPG quality or reduce visual complexity; do not change 16:9 to force a smaller file.
How to design a thumbnail that survives small screens
Dimensions solve cropping and sharpness problems, but they do not make a crowded design readable. Build the composition around the way viewers encounter thumbnails: small, quickly and beside competing images.
Keep the focal subject and text inside a safe area
- Leave breathing room around faces, logos and key words so a crop at the edge does not remove context.
- Use a short phrase rather than a sentence. Test it at a small preview size before export.
- Separate foreground text from the background with contrast, an outline or a simple shadow. Avoid hairline strokes that disappear after compression.
- Do not place essential information in corners where interface badges or timestamps may overlap.
Check the source at both desktop and mobile sizes
Review the 3840 × 2160 master for jagged edges, then reduce it to a phone-sized preview. A design that looks balanced at full resolution can become unreadable when reduced. This check is more useful than adding detail merely because the source canvas is 4K.
YouTube Shorts thumbnail size and the 9:16 ratio
For a Short, use a vertical 9:16 canvas at 2160 × 3840 pixels. YouTube states a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts thumbnails. Do not submit a 16:9 image and expect YouTube to preserve its full composition in a vertical frame.
Vertical-video discovery surfaces have an additional caveat: on Home, Explore and subscriptions, YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 image even when you uploaded a custom thumbnail. Keep the subject and any critical words near the central portion of the 9:16 design so an automatically cropped presentation is less destructive.

Podcast playlist artwork: use 1:1
YouTube lists 1:1 as the recommended ratio for podcast playlists. The current guidance does not state a corresponding pixel dimension, so choose a square working canvas supported by your design tool and preserve the 1:1 ratio through export. Podcast upload limits differ by device: 50 MB on desktop and 10 MB on mobile.
Uploading and checking the result
- Open the video or podcast item in YouTube Studio and choose the custom-thumbnail upload control. Labels can vary slightly between desktop and mobile versions.
- Select the JPG or PNG file and wait for the preview to finish processing.
- Check the preview at its smallest likely display size. Look for clipped faces, unreadable type, unexpected borders or a crop that changes the intended meaning.
- Save the video or playlist only after the preview matches the composition you approved.
For a Short, inspect both the vertical preview and the places where YouTube may use the 4:5 automated image. A thumbnail that is perfect in the editor can still lose its focal point when a discovery surface crops it.
Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Upload rejected on a phone | The file exceeds the 2 MB mobile video limit, or 10 MB mobile podcast limit. | Export JPG, lower compression quality in small steps and confirm the byte size before uploading. |
| Image looks soft | The source was smaller than the display size, or it was repeatedly resaved. | Return to the original design, export once at 3840 × 2160 (video) or 2160 × 3840 (Shorts), then compress from that master. |
| Important subject is cut off on a Short | A 9:16 design was viewed in a 4:5 discovery crop. | Move the focal subject and essential words toward the center and preview the crop before publishing. |
| Black or empty bars appear | The uploaded image is not 16:9 for a regular video, or not 9:16 for a Short. | Rebuild or crop the artwork on the correct canvas instead of stretching it. |
| Text is unreadable after upload | Type was too small or had insufficient contrast at thumbnail scale. | Shorten the wording, increase size and contrast, and test a phone-sized preview. |
| File is accepted on desktop but not mobile | Desktop allows up to 50 MB for video and Shorts, while mobile allows 2 MB. | Create a mobile-specific compressed export while retaining the same dimensions and ratio. |
Capture a clean page preview without mistaking it for thumbnail creation
If you need to document how a published video page looks, a screenshot API can capture the page itself; it does not design or resize a thumbnail. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try for that narrow job because it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
It can also let an AI workflow capture a page through its MCP server, with tools named take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. That is useful for checking a live page around your thumbnail, not for changing YouTube’s required dimensions.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The examples below capture a video page; replace the URL with your own public page. Full parameters and response details are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Can a 4K thumbnail be used for a 720p video?
Yes. Thumbnail dimensions are an image-upload choice and do not have to match the video’s playback resolution. YouTube’s current recommendation for video thumbnails is 3840 × 2160, while 1280 × 720 remains a smaller 16:9 working option.
Should one artwork file serve both a regular video and a Short?
No. Prepare separate compositions: 16:9 for a standard video and 9:16 for a Short. Reusing one canvas usually forces a crop that removes the subject or text in one of the formats.

Does a larger thumbnail guarantee more clicks?
No official performance statistic ties a particular pixel size or ratio to higher click-through rates. Use the correct ratio, preserve legibility and test the creative idea rather than assuming that more pixels alone will improve results.
Content and policy checks
Technical compliance is not the only requirement. YouTube’s Community Guidelines apply to thumbnails; examples of prohibited material include nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, and violence or harmful content. Review the image as carefully as the video title and description before publishing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 4K thumbnail be used for a 720p video?
Yes. Thumbnail dimensions are independent of the video’s playback resolution. Use 3840 × 2160 when possible, or 1280 × 720 as a smaller 16:9 working canvas.
Should one artwork file serve both a regular video and a Short?
No. Create separate 16:9 and 9:16 compositions so cropping does not remove the focal subject or text.
Does a larger thumbnail guarantee more clicks?
No official statistic links a specific pixel size or ratio to higher click-through rates; legibility and the creative concept matter more than pixel count alone.
