Why the largest option may be missing
YouTube exposes several conventional variants: default, medium, high, standard and maxres. A particular video may not have every variant, and the API can omit width or height fields. The yt-dlp project documents three useful switches. Install the current release using the method appropriate for your operating system, then run these commands from the directory where you want the files.
Save the selected thumbnail
yt-dlp --write-thumbnail "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"--write-thumbnail writes a thumbnail file alongside the downloaded media workflow. If you do not want the video itself, combine your normal yt-dlp selection settings so the command performs only the metadata/thumbnail work you require.
Save every available thumbnail format
yt-dlp --write-all-thumbnails "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"This asks yt-dlp to save all formats that YouTube makes available for that resource. Availability still depends on the video; it cannot create a variant that YouTube does not provide.
Inspect formats before downloading

Playlist and batch use
Run the same options against a playlist URL when you have permission to process the videos. yt-dlp applies the thumbnail operation across the invoked media workflow, while a browser form is generally designed around one pasted link at a time. The cited documentation does not establish a universal speed advantage, so measure your own workload if throughput matters.
Retrieve thumbnail metadata through the YouTube Data API
The official API represents thumbnails as URL, width and height fields under size variants. Your application should treat each field as optional: variants differ by resource type and by the source upload’s resolution.
Implementation pattern
- Request the video resource with the snippet data your application needs.
- Read the thumbnail object and test for
maxres, then fall back throughstandard,high,mediumanddefault. - Check whether width and height are present before displaying them in a layout or writing them to a database.
- Download the returned URL only when your use complies with the API Services policies and your rights obligations.

Downloading is not a reuse licence
Having access to an image URL does not grant permission to republish the artwork. Before using a thumbnail in a publication, advertisement, product, or social post, obtain permission or assess a specific legal basis. A vendor page describes thumbnails as copyrighted by the channel uploader and recommends research, previews, reaction commentary or inspiration rather than presenting another creator’s artwork as your own; that is guidance, not a definitive copyright test.
API-client restrictions
YouTube’s API Services Developer Policies state, in the API-client context: “You and your API Clients must not, and must not encourage, enable, or require others to:” download, import, back up, cache or store copies of YouTube audiovisual content without YouTube’s prior written approval, make content available for offline playback, or facilitate or promote copyright infringement. Read the complete policy for scope; this excerpt alone is not a complete ruling on every manual thumbnail download or use.
Developer guidance also generally requires video metadata such as a thumbnail and title to remain visible and unmodified in API-client experiences. A custom play button over a thumbnail is described as acceptable when tapping it starts playback. These presentation requirements are separate from whether a person may save or reuse an image.
Posting a thumbnail on YouTube
YouTube’s thumbnail policy prohibits misleading imagery and lists pornography, nudity, graphic violence, and vulgar or shocking language among examples. Depending on context, a thumbnail can be age-restricted or removed, and violations can lead to warnings or strikes. Downloading an image does not change those platform rules.

“No thumbnail” or a blank result
- Verify that you supplied the video ID, not an unrelated playlist or channel ID.
- Run
yt-dlp --list-thumbnailsto see whether YouTube exposes any variants. - In an API integration, check that the video exists, is available in your region and actually returned a

The maximum-resolution image is unavailable
Try standard or high. Variant availability depends on the resource and source resolution; a missing largest image is not necessarily a tool failure.
The command fails before writing a file
- Update yt-dlp and confirm your terminal can reach YouTube.
- Quote URLs containing
&so your shell does not interpret query parameters. - Use a writable output directory and inspect the complete error text before changing options.
The API response lacks dimensions
Do not assume dimensions from a name such as high. Treat width and height as nullable, and use the actual image dimensions after retrieval when your layout requires exact sizing.
