In YouTube, it follows a channel and adds its uploads to your Subscriptions feed. On an external website, Google’s official widget displays a Subscribe control, then opens the channel on YouTube so the visitor can confirm the subscription. Subscribing and enabling notifications are separate actions.
What the YouTube Subscribe button does
When you subscribe to a channel, its recent uploads appear in your Subscriptions feed. YouTube may also send personalized notifications, but a subscription is not a promise that every upload will produce a push alert. Use the bell menu beside Subscribed to choose All, Personalized, or None notifications. See YouTube’s subscription guidance and notification settings help.
The control can appear below a video, on a channel homepage, in the mobile app, and in features such as video end screens. Its position and appearance can change by device, account, experiment, channel type, and interface version.
How to subscribe or unsubscribe
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Open a video from the channel or open its channel page.
- Click Subscribe.
- To change alerts, click the bell beside Subscribed and choose All, Personalized, or None.
On a phone or tablet
- Open the YouTube app or mobile YouTube site and sign in.
- Open the video or channel.
- Tap Subscribe.
- Tap the bell beside Subscribed if you want to change notifications.
To unsubscribe, return to the channel or one of its videos and select Subscribed, then confirm Unsubscribe. If you unsubscribe and later subscribe again, YouTube resets that channel’s notification preference.

Subscribe versus the notification bell

| All | Requests all eligible channel notifications, subject to YouTube, account, app, device, and channel conditions. |
| None | Keeps the subscription active but turns off notifications from that channel. |
For channels marked made for kids, notification controls may be unavailable or fixed to no notifications. Even when a viewer selects All, Google Account and device notification settings must allow alerts. YouTube’s creator analytics separately report subscribers who selected All notifications and those eligible to receive them; these are not identical groups. How to add the official Subscribe Button to a website
Google’s official widget uses platform.js and a container with the exact g-ytsubscribe class. A click opens the channel page in a new window for confirmation; it does not silently subscribe a visitor.

Rendering it in a JavaScript application
If your application inserts the element after the initial page load, use the documented dynamic methods:

Older subscribe/unsubscribe callbacks and the data-ytonevent and data-onytevent attributes are deprecated; do not build conversion logic around them.
Official widget or a normal channel link?

Troubleshoot a missing or broken button
Viewer-side problems
- Confirm that you are signed in before trying to subscribe.
- Check the channel page as well as the video page; YouTube may have moved the control.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers or privacy extensions and test another browser.
- Allow the page to finish loading and check whether the account, device, or YouTube interface is in an experiment.
- For artist content, look for the official artist channel. Some topic or partner-provided channels may no longer show Subscribe when an Official Artist Channel exists; see YouTube’s artist-channel guidance.
Website-widget problems
- Verify that
https://apis.google.com/js/platform.jsloads successfully. - Check for the exact class
g-ytsubscribe. - Provide either
data-channelordata-channelid. - Check that the channel ID is correct and is not a video, playlist, or other ID.
- Inspect the browser console for JavaScript or Content Security Policy errors.
- Test without content blockers, then test a simple standalone HTML page.
- If your framework adds the element after page load, call the documented dynamic-rendering method.
- Inspect CSS for
display:none, clipping, zero dimensions, or an overflowing parent. - Test another browser and recheck the current reference guide before deploying a permanent implementation.
Can you track Subscribe-button clicks?
Not through a supported, user-level widget callback. YouTube’s Subscribe Button conditions prohibit recognizing a user’s button action with pixels, cookies, or similar tracking, and the old event callbacks are deprecated.

Creators can still see aggregate subscription sources in YouTube Studio: sign in, open Analytics, choose SEE MORE on an analytics card, then select Subscription source. Categories can include the watch page, channel page, other channels, interactive features such as end screens or watermarks, Home, Search, advertising, posts, and external websites. This reporting is not a list of individual website visitors who clicked.
Rules and privacy considerations
- Keep the button visible; do not hide or obscure it.
- Do not offer prizes, rewards, or other incentives for clicking.
- Do not use pixels, cookies, or similar mechanisms to identify a visitor’s Subscribe action.
- Use YouTube branding only as authorized by the documentation and API terms.
These are platform-compliance requirements, not a complete legal review. Separately assess privacy consent, accessibility, advertising rules, and data-protection obligations for your audience and location.
Subscribe controls in video end screens
Creators can place a Subscribe element at the end of a video. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, choose the video, open Editor, select End screen, add Subscribe, preview it, and click Save. End screens are not available in every context, including made-for-kids videos, the YouTube Music app, mobile web, Flash videos, and 360 videos. See YouTube’s end-screen instructions.
Limits and related controls
YouTube’s viewer help currently states a maximum of 75 new channel subscriptions per day and a general maximum of 2,000 subscriptions, with the exact limit potentially varying by account. It recommends staying below 5,000 for the best experience. These limits can change, so verify them in YouTube Help before relying on them.
