If FFmpeg on your Windows VPS cannot publish to YouTube, check the current Live Control Room stream key and server URL first, then verify RTMPS support and outbound TCP 443 connectivity. An India-based VPS location alone does not identify the cause: the failure could be the event settings, URL, FFmpeg build, or a Windows or provider network rule.
Diagnose the failure in order
Work through these checks from the YouTube event outward. A timeout can happen before YouTube has a chance to validate the key, so do not treat every connection error as a bad key.
- Match the key and URL to the right event. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream, or open the scheduled event you intend to use. Copy that event’s stream key and server URL, then update FFmpeg. The key and URL work together and must belong to the selected stream. YouTube notes that previous settings may reload for returning streamers; if startup reports a key error, its guidance is to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. - Use the current RTMPS ingest URL, not a guessed or stale one. Live Control Room may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default. To get the RTMPS URL, use the lock icon beside Stream URL. Use the scheme, host, and application path shown for the current event, plus its corresponding key. For RTMPS, YouTube specifies TCP port 443. If an SSL error persists, YouTube Help says to try specifying
:443in the URL or encoder port field. See YouTube’s RTMPS help and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide. - Check the FFmpeg executable on the VPS. The protocols supported by the
ffmpeg.exeinstalled on this Windows VPS are what matter; another computer’s build is not evidence that this one supports the selected RTMP variant. Check the build and its protocol support, and update to a current build if appropriate. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP-family output. - Test with a controlled file source and a valid output. FFmpeg documents this real-time file-streaming example:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. For YouTube, replace the example destination with the current Live Control Room ingest URL and key, using the syntax supported by the installed build.-repaces a file in real time; it does not correct an invalid key or restore blocked connectivity. If you are relaying a live input, inspect that input’s health and timestamps separately. - Test whether the VPS can reach the endpoint. Confirm that Windows Defender Firewall and any VPS control-panel firewall or security policy permit the FFmpeg process or outbound TCP connection to the YouTube RTMPS endpoint on port 443. If it still cannot connect, ask the VPS provider whether outbound TCP 443 or sustained RTMPS is restricted and request connection-level diagnostics. The checks available vary by Windows Server version and provider, so there is no single provider-specific firewall path to give without those details.
Use the error stage to narrow down the cause

Check Live Control Room after a connection is established
If FFmpeg has connected but YouTube does not show a usable preview, read the event’s stream-health status rather than changing the key repeatedly. YouTube’s health reporting can flag unsupported audio or video codecs, missing media streams, bitrate warnings, and keyframe intervals. Its LiveStreams API guidance uses a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less for the GOP issue threshold. These checks concern media YouTube receives; they do not establish that the key is correct when FFmpeg cannot connect. See the LiveStreams API documentation.
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation says, “RTMPS is a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially if it requires low latency.” Use the current RTMPS URL shown for your event rather than relying on a copied example endpoint.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Reusing a key from another event: choose the intended event in Live Control Room and copy its matching key and URL.
- Putting the key in a public command or screenshot: treat it as a credential. Do not post it in an issue, support forum, or screenshot; redact it before sharing logs.
- Assuming every failure is authentication: a timeout or TLS error can occur before YouTube validates stream content.
- Changing codec or bitrate before checking connectivity: those settings matter when data reaches YouTube and its health panel reports a media issue; they will not fix a blocked connection.
- Assuming India is the cause: the VPS location by itself does not prove egress is blocked or that its route is unsuitable. Check the actual endpoint connection and ask the provider about its network policy.
What to include when asking for help
If the checks do not isolate the issue, provide the sanitized FFmpeg command, exact error text, FFmpeg version/build information, Windows Server version, VPS provider, and whether outbound TCP 443 is permitted. Remove the stream key and any other credentials before sharing. Without the error and instance details, there is no reliable way to identify a single root cause.
