Start with the OBS Stats counter that is rising. Network dropped frames point to the connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Rendering lag and encoding lag indicate different performance bottlenecks on your computer. Then check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages: the two views help diagnose different parts of the stream.
What each OBS Stats counter means

Do not use “dropped frames” as a catch-all for all three. The counter identifies the first place to investigate; a remedy for one category may not address another.

How to diagnose a warning while streaming
- Open OBS Stats and reproduce the real workload. Check during a demanding part of the planned stream, with representative movement and audio, rather than relying only on an idle or static scene.
- Identify which counter rises. Note whether the change is in network dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag. Keep the categories separate as you troubleshoot.
- If network dropped frames rise, check connection and bitrate. OBS recommends lowering the video bitrate as a troubleshooting step. Confirm whether the connection is stable and can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance also describes dynamically changing bitrate as a way to reduce frame dropping during congestion—not a fix for the underlying connection problem. It can reduce stream quality.
- If rendering or encoding lag rises, investigate computer performance. Follow OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide before changing encoder workload or output settings. Frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance, so assess it as part of the workload.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. OBS counters and YouTube’s platform-side health status are complementary signals. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned event, and monitoring health messages during the event. What if viewers report buffering but OBS shows no network drops?
An OBS network counter at zero does not prove that every viewer is receiving smooth playback. Viewers use different devices, locations, and internet connections, and buffering can occur on their side of the delivery path. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide notes that a lower bitrate and platform recommendations may make a stream accessible to a wider audience.

Use viewer reports alongside OBS Stats and YouTube’s health messages. A clean network counter rules out neither viewer-side variation nor every issue in platform delivery.
