A YouTube stream-health warning does not, by itself, tell you whether your Mac mini is struggling to render or encode, or whether the outgoing network connection is failing. During the stream, record YouTube’s exact warning and timestamp, then compare it with OBS’s separate network-dropped-frame, rendering-lag and encoding-lag statistics. That comparison helps identify which part of the stream path to investigate.
What a YouTube stream-health warning tells you
YouTube’s Live Control Room displays detected stream errors alongside its Health Indicator. The warning includes a timestamp, and unresolved errors continue to appear. YouTube labels critical errors red and moderate errors yellow. Read the exact message rather than treating the color or the general health status as a diagnosis: YouTube reports a problem with the incoming stream, but its warning alone may not identify whether the cause is the network, local processing or a setting mismatch. YouTube’s list of live-stream error messages describes distinct error classes, including incorrect stream format, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, resolution, audio, and mismatched primary and backup streams.

Check OBS’s dropped-frame and performance statistics
While streaming, inspect OBS’s statistics and note the network dropped frames, rendering lag and encoding lag separately. Their values are not interchangeable: a network-related count points toward packet delivery or connection conditions, while rendering and encoding counters point toward local processing. Compare what OBS reports with YouTube’s warning and the stream’s local output. The official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a current, version-specific OBS Stats-window navigation path, so use the statistics available in your installed version rather than relying on an assumed menu path.

Use the stream and local output to narrow down the cause
- Record YouTube’s message. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, note the exact warning, its timestamp and whether YouTube marks it red or yellow. If it names a setting, check that specific setting in OBS before changing unrelated options.
- Compare the OBS counters. Note network dropped frames, rendering lag and encoding lag during the same interval as the warning. Look for which counter changes when the problem occurs; do not infer that one category means another.
- Inspect the encoder output or a local recording. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says poor appearance or sound can reflect the input source or encoder, and advises checking encoder errors and CPU load. If the local output itself is poor, investigate the source, scenes and encoding. If local output appears healthy while YouTube reports trouble, investigate delivery to YouTube, including the outbound connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps describe this distinction.
- Test the outgoing connection under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends testing connection strength when the encoder output looks healthy but the stream has issues. A speed test is a useful check, not proof that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast. If the test indicates a connection issue, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.
Check whether OBS’s stream settings match YouTube’s requirements
Match settings to the warning, chosen codec, resolution, frame rate and available sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 among its options, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, specifies CBR bitrate encoding, and allows AAC or MP3 audio. The appropriate format can depend on the protocol and stream type, so follow the guidance for the stream you are sending rather than assuming one configuration applies to every setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
| H.264 stream setting | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s listed H.264 values for the specified resolutions and frame rates, not a guarantee that an internet connection with the same nominal upload speed will sustain a stable live stream. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its error-message guidance also specifies a Closed GOP for optimal transcoding and notes that at 30 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames. If you change frame rate, revisit the keyframe interval as well.

- Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU
- 16-core Neural Engine
- 16GB unified memory

YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and motion similar to the actual broadcast, monitoring stream health during the event, and choosing quality that is reliable for the connection. A lower resolution or frame rate can reduce bandwidth and local processing demands, but the right trade-off depends on the stream and Mac mini. Do not choose settings solely to match a bitrate table if the connection cannot reliably sustain them.
Reduce local rendering or encoding strain on macOS
If OBS reports performance overload, focus on local processing rather than treating it as a network problem. OBS’s encoding-performance guide says scene compositing and rendering use GPU resources; on macOS, it points to Activity Monitor for inspecting GPU use. The guide recommends reducing OBS output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes to lower the load. Close only applications you recognize and opened; do not terminate unfamiliar system processes.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- YouTube names a bitrate, keyframe, codec, resolution or audio issue: Check the named setting against YouTube’s guidance and the actual stream configuration. Confirm the settings match the stream YouTube is receiving, including any primary or backup stream configuration.
- Network dropped frames rise while local output looks normal: Test outbound connection strength under conditions similar to the live broadcast, then compare the stream bitrate with the connection’s sustained capacity. Reduce stream quality if needed; contact your ISP if the test identifies a connection issue.
- Rendering lag or encoding lag rises: Check Activity Monitor’s GPU use and OBS’s CPU or encoder errors, then reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify scenes. These are local performance checks, not network fixes.
- The connection test looks fast but warnings continue: A speed test does not establish that upload capacity stays stable for the entire broadcast. Compare the timing of warnings with OBS’s counters and test during conditions closer to the live session.
- You want to test a wired connection: Ethernet is an optional way to check a wired network path, not a guaranteed fix. It may not resolve ISP congestion, router problems or other causes. Check your particular Mac mini’s ports and network arrangement before choosing a cable or adapter.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than troubleshoot a camera-based OBS broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
