A YouTube stream health warning does not, by itself, mean your FFmpeg preset is wrong. Read the exact message beside the health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room, then check the stream property it identifies: codec or profile, bitrate, upload bandwidth, or keyframe interval. An FFmpeg preset affects encoding behavior; it does not guarantee that the resulting stream meets YouTube’s ingestion requirements.
Start with the exact YouTube warning
In YouTube Live Control Room, read the message shown alongside the stream health indicator. Use that message to decide what to inspect before changing encoder settings. YouTube’s guidance identifies problems including an incorrect audio or video codec, an incorrect video profile, an incorrect bitrate, insufficient bandwidth for the selected resolution, and mismatched keyframe frequencies between primary and backup streams.

- Codec or profile message: inspect the encoded output and the ingestion settings you selected.
- Bitrate message: compare the output bitrate with the YouTube recommendation for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Bandwidth message: test sustained outbound upload capacity under the conditions in which you will stream.
- Keyframe message: check the emitted keyframe interval and, if using primary and backup streams, whether their keyframe frequencies match.
The actual warning, FFmpeg command, codec, resolution, frame rate, and computer are not specified here, so no single root cause or universal preset can be inferred. YouTube’s official guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips.

FFmpeg’s libx264 wrapper treats preset and tune as separate options. Its description of preset calls it an encoding preset and points to x264’s help for valid choices; tune is a distinct tuning option. A preset is not a YouTube-compliance switch: YouTube receives the encoded stream and evaluates properties such as codec, bitrate, and keyframe frequency.

Preset choices and their performance trade-offs are specific to the encoder implementation and FFmpeg build. The workload also matters: a setting that encodes one resolution and frame rate in real time on one machine may not do so on another. Do not switch automatically to a named preset such as ultrafast, veryfast, or medium based only on a health warning. Choose a configuration that can encode the intended workload in real time, then check the output and the specific warning.
Check the stream against YouTube’s settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. Advanced settings on that guidance include progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Check the current YouTube table for the exact codec and delivery mode you use; a value for one codec should not be assumed to apply to another.

Tune methodically, then test the actual output
- Record the warning verbatim. Note when it appears and whether it names codec, profile, bitrate, bandwidth, or keyframes. This prevents an unrelated preset change from obscuring the cause.
- Confirm the intended input and output settings. Check the codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, audio codec, and delivery configuration against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Compare actual bitrate and keyframes with the matching YouTube requirements. Use the table for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate; confirm that the emitted keyframe interval is two seconds where possible and no longer than four seconds.
- Check real-time encoding performance. Run the intended resolution and frame rate on the actual FFmpeg build and machine. A preset is useful only if the encoder can keep up with the workload; do not assume performance from the preset name.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. After a change, verify the emitted stream and the YouTube health message again. If the warning is about bandwidth, changing the encoding preset alone will not increase network capacity.
Separate upload problems from encoder problems
YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to an individual stream, and connectivity disruptions can interrupt delivery. Test outbound upload capacity while the network is under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, not only when it is otherwise idle.
- Include the total bitrate of all streams being sent. If primary and backup streams are both transmitted, account for both.
- Compare sustained capacity—not just a short peak—with the combined stream bitrate and the recommended headroom.
- If capacity is insufficient, lower the selected resolution or frame rate and then use the bitrate guidance for that new combination.
- A wired Ethernet connection may help if testing points to unreliable connectivity, but it cannot fix an unsupported codec, wrong profile, incorrect keyframe interval, or an overloaded encoder.
Rehearse and monitor the stream
Before an important event, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and watch its health messages while the test runs. After correcting a setting, test again and confirm that the warning has cleared; YouTube advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event.
