YouTube Stable volume reduces the difference between quieter and louder parts of a supported video, so you may not need to adjust the volume as often. YouTube says it is on by default, but it is unavailable for some videos and is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos. Keep it on for uneven speech; try it off for films, music and other content where loudness changes are part of the experience.
What Stable volume does—and what it does not promise
YouTube describes Stable volume as a feature that continuously adjusts playback levels to reduce variation between quieter and louder sections. It can be useful when dialogue is hard to hear but effects or other passages jump in level.
YouTube has not publicly documented the exact signal-processing method, a loudness target, or whether it uses a particular compressor, limiter or normalization standard. Treat it as playback-level balancing, not a guarantee that every video will have the same loudness. It also does not change the creator’s uploaded file: the control affects playback, not a permanent remaster of the video.
The ordinary YouTube volume slider and your phone, computer, TV or soundbar volume controls set playback or output level. Stable volume is a separate feature intended to reduce variation within a supported video. It may make quieter speech seem louder relative to loud passages, but that is not the same as simply raising the master volume.

Should you leave it on?
Use Stable volume when steady listening matters more than preserving the full contrast between quiet and loud passages. YouTube says the feature is enabled by default; that describes its default behavior, not a guarantee that it will be available or have an audible effect on every video.
| What you are watching or hearing | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Podcasts, interviews, news, commentary or tutorials with uneven speech levels | Try it on |
| A playlist that switches between creators or recording levels | Try it on |
| Late-night viewing or dialogue on small speakers | Try it on, then compare |
| Films, trailers, concert footage or music performances | Usually try it off if the mix sounds flat |
| Music-production lessons, ASMR, ambience, nature or walking videos | Usually try it off if quiet-to-loud contrast matters |
| Audio testing or troubleshooting distortion and dropouts | Turn it off for a clean comparison; investigate the playback device or connection |
These are listening recommendations based on the feature’s stated purpose and its likely trade-off, not genre-specific rules published by YouTube. A film or music video may still sound fine with it on; compare both settings at the same device volume.

On YouTube TV

On Android TV or Google TV
On some Android TV and Google TV devices, reports place the option in the player’s gear menu. The feature was observed during its 2024 rollout on some devices running YouTube app version 4.40.303; that is a historical observation, not a universal current requirement. See the rollout reports from 9to5Google and Android Authority. Menu names and availability vary by device and installed app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the option may be missing or seem ineffective
YouTube says Stable volume is not available for every video. It is specifically turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos, so an absent control on that content does not by itself mean the app is broken. Availability also differs by player and device; YouTube’s help page documents desktop and YouTube TV controls, while mobile and TV app menus may vary.

Step 2: Test the System to Make Sure it Set Up Properly - Turn on the subwoofer which is under the power supply, and test the remote control and Bluetooth connection (Connect Bluetooth named "Bobtot B38" on "BT" mode) to ensure everything is working properly.
- Check the menu: on mobile, look under Additional settings or an expanded playback-controls menu.
- Try an ordinary spoken-word video: a commentary or tutorial can help distinguish a video-specific limitation from a device or app limitation.
- If the option is still missing: update the YouTube app and check again. Support is not established for every TV platform, console, casting device or embedded player.
- If it is on but the sound still varies: the feature is not a guarantee of constant loudness. Source audio, deliberate sound design, or processing by your TV, soundbar, Bluetooth device or operating system can also affect what you hear.
Does it require YouTube Premium?
YouTube’s support page presents Stable volume as a playback control without identifying Premium as a prerequisite. Contemporary rollout coverage also described it as a general YouTube feature. The available documentation does not establish that a subscription is needed to use it; do not subscribe just to obtain this setting. Availability still depends on the video, device and player.
If turning it off does not stick—or the audio is still wrong
The available official documentation does not establish a universal account-wide switch that keeps Stable volume off everywhere. If it returns, turn it off while the affected video is playing and check the setting again on the particular device or app where it reappears. Then try these steps:
- Update YouTube, then force-close and reopen the app.
- Test another video to see whether the behavior is limited to one piece of content.
- If the setting still does not retain its state, sign out and back in, then use YouTube’s feedback tools to report the behavior.
If the complaint is crackling, distortion, delay or Bluetooth dropouts rather than changes between quiet and loud passages, Stable volume is unlikely to be the primary fix. Test another speaker or headphones, check the connection, and compare with the TV or soundbar’s own audio processing disabled.
TVs, soundbars and operating systems may offer separate controls such as auto volume, night mode, dialogue enhancement or loudness equalization. These are independent of YouTube Stable volume. Avoid stacking several processors without testing: turn off the TV or soundbar’s auto-volume feature, compare YouTube with Stable volume on and off at the same output level, then choose the combination that gives intelligible dialogue without flattening music or effects.
