There is no universal winner between YouTube Shorts and TikTok. Choose based on where your audience is, the video format you make, which monetization routes you can qualify for, and whether you can clear the audio for each service. YouTube Shorts currently includes qualifying square or vertical uploads up to three minutes; TikTok’s one-minute minimum applies to videos seeking Creator Rewards, not to TikTok uploads generally. Neither rule predicts which platform will give a particular video more views or income.
How the platforms treat original vertical videos
YouTube and TikTok have different definitions and program rules, so uploading a video is not the same as qualifying it for monetization.

YouTube Shorts: format and length
For standard channels, square or vertical videos uploaded after October 15, 2024, and no longer than three minutes are categorized as Shorts. This is YouTube’s current rule for ordinary channels; Official Artist Channels have a separate effective date. See YouTube’s three-minute Shorts guidance for the current details.

You can upload from a computer through YouTube Studio or use the YouTube app’s upload and trim flow. YouTube says a phone is enough to record, edit, and upload; specialized equipment is not a prerequisite. Its instructions are in YouTube’s Shorts upload guide and Shorts upload tips.

TikTok: posting versus Creator Rewards
TikTok Creator Rewards requires eligible original, high-quality videos that are at least one minute long. That is a condition of the rewards program, not a general minimum length for posting videos on TikTok. TikTok also says Duets, Stitches, and sponsored content do not count as original for this program. See TikTok’s Creator Rewards program explanation.

Start with the audience you can reach
Ask where your intended viewers already watch and engage with your work. The official platform materials cited here explain format, publishing, and program rules; they do not establish a controlled head-to-head reach result for comparable creators. Broad claims that one service always delivers more views or better growth are not a sound basis for choosing.
Match the format to the goal
If your vertical videos often run longer than a minute, both services may be options, but their rules serve different purposes: YouTube’s three-minute limit defines qualifying Shorts, while TikTok’s one-minute rule determines eligibility for Creator Rewards. If your priority is TikTok rewards, plan for that minimum and the program’s originality conditions. If your videos are shorter, that alone does not prevent publishing them to TikTok; it does mean they do not meet the stated Creator Rewards length condition.

What monetization eligibility does—and does not—tell you
YouTube Shorts revenue sharing
YouTube says Shorts Feed revenue comes from ads shown between Shorts. Eligible monetizing partners must accept the Shorts Monetization Module. YouTube allocates a Creator Pool using eligible engaged views and music usage, then applies a 45% creator revenue share to the creator’s allocation. This is a formula for distributing revenue, not a prediction of what any channel will earn. Details are in YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies.

- Higher threshold for Watch Page Ads and Shorts Feed Ads: 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the relevant periods.
Feature access can depend on the creator’s country and account. Check YouTube’s current Partner Program requirements rather than assuming a threshold guarantees access to a particular feature.
There is also a music-rights caveat for longer Shorts: YouTube says a Short over one minute with an active Content ID claim may be blocked and ineligible for monetization. Check the live rule and the status of the specific claim; an upload’s length alone does not establish whether it has a claim.

TikTok Creator Rewards
Creator Rewards eligibility depends on the account, region, and video as well as the one-minute minimum. A post being available on TikTok does not establish that the account or video qualifies for rewards. TikTok’s program page describes the conditions, but eligibility should be confirmed for the creator’s location and account.
Sponsored posts, Duets, and Stitches do not count as original videos for this program, according to TikTok’s comparison of Creator Rewards with the former Creator Fund. Keep that distinction in mind if you use collaboration formats or brand content: a video can be publishable without meeting this program’s originality test.

A track available inside one app should not be treated as licensed for use on another service. For brand, product, or service promotion on TikTok, TikTok recommends music from its Commercial Music Library, which it describes as pre-cleared for commercial use. Confirm that the permissions cover the actual use and jurisdiction.

YouTube offers its own Shorts Audio Library and royalty-free options through its Audio Library. Those YouTube options do not establish permission to use the same track on TikTok, and TikTok’s music availability does not establish YouTube rights. For a cross-post, choose audio that is cleared independently for both destinations or use original audio you have the rights to use. You can make a cross-posting strategy, but treat the two uploads as separate publications rather than assuming one platform’s rules carry over to the other. Before posting, check the audio permissions for each destination, confirm that the edit fits the platform’s format and any monetization goal, and avoid assuming that a video eligible for one service’s features qualifies for the other’s rewards program.
- Identify the goal and intended audience. Decide whether you are prioritizing audience development, YouTube Shorts revenue sharing, TikTok Creator Rewards, or another outcome, then check the audience you can actually reach on each service.
- Adapt the video for each upload. Adjust the opening, caption, and edit to suit the destination instead of relying on an identical export to perform equally.
- Clear audio independently. Confirm rights for each service, especially when promoting a brand, product, or service.
- Compare your own results. Use each platform’s native analytics to review retention, engagement, follows, and eligible views across comparable posts over a meaningful period. This is a practical creator comparison, not a controlled platform experiment.
When TikTok One may matter
Creator Rewards is not the only potential creator opportunity described in TikTok’s materials. TikTok One is a platform for creators, advertisers, and brands to collaborate. Access criteria include account standing, age, follower and view activity, and recent posting; some thresholds vary by region. Treat it as a possible route to brand collaboration, not a guaranteed opportunity or a promise of affiliate tracking or income. Check TikTok One’s eligibility details in your account and region.
