You can make a YouTube Short in the YouTube app or upload a prepared video through the app or YouTube Studio. For standard channels, a square or vertical video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, can be categorized as a Short if it is no longer than three minutes. Before publishing, review the crop, audio, title, privacy setting and audience designation.
What qualifies as a YouTube Short?
For standard YouTube channels, a square or vertical video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, and up to three minutes long is categorized as a Short. Older uploads do not necessarily change classification retroactively. YouTube’s desktop upload guidance also specifies a square or vertical aspect ratio and a maximum length of three minutes.

The YouTube creation guide states that Shorts can be uploaded at up to 1080p. Frame for square or vertical viewing, and check the trim and crop preview before publishing. YouTube advises avoiding black bars on vertical videos.

- Sign in to the YouTube app and tap Create → Short.
- Record by holding or tapping the capture control; tap it again to stop. You can record multiple segments and change the duration.
- Preview the video and edit it. The app’s creation tools include sounds, text-to-speech and effects; you can also undo or redo the previous segment.
- Tap Next. Add a title of up to 100 characters and set the video details, including privacy.
- Choose the correct audience setting: Yes, it’s made for kids or No, it’s not made for kids.
- Tap Upload Short to publish, or Save draft to finish later.
How to upload and publish a video you already made
From the YouTube app on Android
- Start the Short creation or upload flow and select an existing square or vertical video.
- Trim the footage to three minutes or less. The app’s editing tools let you add text, filters, music or audio.
- Add a title, choose the video settings and audience designation, then upload.
You can also upload through the YouTube Studio app. Review the finished preview before publishing, especially if you have trimmed or reframed a longer recording.

From a computer in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create → Upload videos.
- Select a square or vertical video that is no longer than three minutes.
- Complete the video details in the draft, check the audience and privacy settings, then publish.
The desktop flow allows you to select up to 15 short videos at once.
Check privacy and audience settings before publishing
YouTube’s default privacy setting differs by age: creators aged 13–17 have private as the default, while creators aged 18 or older have public as the default. You can choose public, private or unlisted. Check the setting explicitly rather than assuming the default is what you want.

The audience designation is separate from privacy. Select whether the video is made for kids based on its intended audience; it is not simply a choice about whether children are allowed to watch it.

Music and other protected material added outside YouTube must be cleared for use. Otherwise, a video may receive a Content ID claim; a valid copyright takedown can remove a Short and result in a copyright strike.

For standard channels, songs available in the Shorts Audio Library can generally be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, although some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. YouTube’s royalty-free Audio Library is another official source. Limits can vary and change, so check the track’s current allowance in the creation flow before publishing.
YouTube’s English regional Help page says that, starting September 24, 2026, new Shorts longer than one minute but shorter than three minutes with an active Content ID claim will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable. That is not a guarantee that claimed music is safe to use or that any particular claimed Short will stay available; rights and claim handling depend on the circumstances.

What happens after a Short is published?
YouTube says viewers may find Shorts in the Shorts Feed, search results, the homepage, a channel homepage, subscriptions and notifications. Discovery is not guaranteed in any one location.

Since March 31, 2025, a Shorts view counts each time a Short starts to play or replay, without a minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube Analytics retains Engaged views for viewers who chose to continue watching. Use the two measures for different questions: raw views count starts and replays, while Engaged views indicate continued viewing.

Common issues to check
- The upload is not categorized as a Short: Check that it is square or vertical, no longer than three minutes, and uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. The rule does not necessarily reclassify older uploads.
- Important content is cut off: Revisit the trim and crop preview and make sure the subject is framed for square or vertical viewing.
- The Short is private unexpectedly: Check the selected privacy setting; age-based defaults differ, so do not rely on the default.
- Music is restricted or claimed: Confirm the track’s current limit in the app and use only audio you have permission to use. A claim or takedown can affect availability.
