Start by copying the RTMPS URL from YouTube Live Control Room and confirming that your encoder connects to its exact hostname and path over TLS on TCP port 443, with that hostname sent as SNI. Then check DNS, outbound rules in the VPS operating system, and routing. Contabo describes its network firewall as filtering inbound traffic while leaving outbound traffic unrestricted, so opening inbound ports is not the right fix for a connection initiated by your VPS. The available documentation does not establish an India-specific block or identify the cause on any particular server.
Identify which connection stage is failing
RTMPS is RTMP carried through TLS. A connection can fail while resolving the hostname, opening TCP, negotiating TLS, or starting the RTMP ingest session. A timeout and a certificate error point to different checks; neither alone proves that Contabo is blocking YouTube. YouTube documents the RTMPS requirements in its RTMPS ingestion guide.

Work through the checks in order
1. Copy YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream settings.
- Reveal or copy the RTMPS URL, not the ordinary RTMP URL. YouTube notes that the default displayed URL may be RTMP; confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
- Preserve the supplied hostname and path exactly, and use the current stream key shown in that control room. Treat the key as a secret: remove it from logs and never include it in a support request.
2. Check TLS, port, and SNI
Verify that the client connects to the supplied hostname on TCP 443, starts TLS, and sends that same hostname as the Server Name Indication (SNI). Google specifies that the hostname is required for authentication via SNI. A connection to an IP address, or a TLS client that omits or changes SNI, can fail authentication even if TCP connects. A successful TCP connection alone is not a successful TLS handshake.

If the error mentions a certificate, check the hostname, port, certificate validation and chain, and the server’s clock before changing firewall rules. Compare a low-level TLS diagnostic made with the correct hostname against the encoder’s result.

3. Test DNS and connectivity from the VPS itself
Run diagnostics on the Contabo VPS, not just on your home computer. Resolve the exact hostname copied from Live Control Room, check whether TCP 443 can be reached, and then test TLS while explicitly supplying that hostname for SNI. Record the time, resolved addresses, command output, and exact error text. These checks separate name resolution or TCP failures from TLS negotiation problems, but they do not validate the RTMP path, stream key, or ingest session.
4. Inspect the VPS operating system’s outbound policy and route
Check the guest firewall and security policy for outbound TCP 443 and DNS, along with the default outbound policy and routing table. On Linux, inspect whichever ruleset is in use, such as UFW, nftables, or iptables; on Windows, check Windows Defender Firewall and applicable local policy. Contabo’s network-firewall explanation describes inbound filtering and unrestricted outbound traffic. Its separate OS-level firewall guidance recognizes that rules on the server can control inbound and outbound traffic. Do not open inbound ports to fix an outbound connection initiated by the VPS.

5. Separate network reachability from encoder behavior
- If TLS using the right hostname succeeds but the encoder fails, inspect its RTMPS preset, URL parsing, SNI behavior, TLS library, and version.
- If both the TLS test and encoder time out, focus on DNS, guest egress policy, the local route, and possible provider routing.
- If YouTube receives the stream but reports health or quality problems, move on to bitrate, encoding settings, CPU load, and available outbound capacity. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
6. Escalate with evidence, not the stream key
If tests point to a route issue, send Contabo the timestamps, destination hostname and resolved IP, VPS location, and traceroute or MTR output, plus the TCP 443 results. Contabo’s connectivity guidance recommends supplying traceroute/MTR results when investigating suspected infrastructure routing issues. For an encoder-specific failure, provide its name and version and the exact sanitized error. Never send the stream key.
After the handshake: check stream health separately
Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, codecs, and encoder load matter once the connection reaches the ingest stage; they do not explain a TLS certificate failure that happens first. When the stream is connected, compare its settings with YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations, and leave network capacity beyond the stream’s bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% spare upload capacity, counting both primary and backup streams.

What the India location does—and does not—tell you
The VPS being in India is useful context to include in a route investigation, but the cited documentation does not establish a Contabo India-specific restriction to YouTube RTMPS. Without the server’s operating system, encoder and version, exact sanitized error, DNS result, firewall rules, and route diagnostics, no particular cause can be confirmed. Treat a provider route issue as a possibility to investigate, not a diagnosis.
