When a YouTube RTMPS connection fails from a DigitalOcean droplet in Bangalore, check the endpoint and stream key first, then verify RTMPS over TLS on outbound port 443, inspect every attached DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall and the droplet’s host firewall, and finally check YouTube’s stream status and health diagnostics. The available official documentation does not establish Bangalore as the cause.
1. Verify YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream’s Stream tab, or open the scheduled stream.
- Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from the Stream URL field. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so confirm that you selected RTMPS.
- Copy the matching stream key into your encoder. Depending on the encoder, enter the URL and key in separate fields, or combine them in the format
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAMEif that is what its configuration expects. - If you use YouTube’s API, its documented primary address is
cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress; the backup address iscdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Use the current values for the specific stream.
Check for copied whitespace, a stale key, or a URL/key pair from a different stream. Do not substitute the ordinary RTMP endpoint when troubleshooting an RTMPS connection.

2. Check RTMPS transport, TLS, and SNI
YouTube’s RTMPS requirements are an rtmps URL, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path, and RTMP carried over SSL/TLS. The connection must use port 443. The TLS handshake must send SNI matching the hostname in the ingestion URL. YouTube’s RTMPS guide identifies a wrong server name, wrong port, and improper SSL setup as common causes.
Test TCP reachability
From the droplet, test the actual hostname in the RTMPS URL:

nc -vz <ingestion-host> 443
A successful result means a TCP connection to that host and port could be made from the test environment. It does not verify the encoder’s full RTMPS session or prove that YouTube is receiving healthy media.
Test the TLS handshake and SNI
Use the same hostname for the connection and SNI name:
openssl s_client -connect <ingestion-host>:443 -servername <ingestion-host>
If the TLS test fails, check that the hostname is copied correctly, port 443 is reachable, certificate validation is not being bypassed or broken, and the encoder or client library supports SNI. A client can sometimes open TCP successfully yet time out because it sends cleartext RTMP instead of RTMP inside TLS. These commands are diagnostic checks, not a complete test of the encoder’s RTMPS behavior.

3. Check both DigitalOcean and droplet firewalls
DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls and firewall software inside a droplet are separate layers. If both are in use, inspect both. The relevant direction for this connection is outbound from the droplet to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint—not inbound TCP 443 to the droplet.
DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall
- In the DigitalOcean control panel, open the droplet’s Networking tab to see rules from Cloud Firewalls attached to it.
- Check every attached Cloud Firewall, not only the one you expect to be active.
- Confirm its outbound rules allow TCP traffic to port 443 and the destination used by the RTMPS URL. When outbound rules are configured, traffic matching no rule is denied.
- Check whether the firewall has any outbound rules at all. DigitalOcean’s firewall quickstart says a firewall with no configured outbound rules permits no outbound traffic; its suggested outbound rules allow all destinations and ports. Choose rules appropriate to your security requirements rather than opening access unnecessarily.

Droplet host firewall
Separately inspect the firewall software configured inside the droplet, such as UFW or iptables. Look for outbound restrictions that could block TCP 443 or the destination. A permissive cloud firewall does not override a blocking host rule, and a permissive host firewall does not override a blocking Cloud Firewall rule.

4. Use YouTube status to distinguish connection from media problems
A connection can reach YouTube while the stream remains unhealthy. If the encoder reports that it is connected, inspect the stream’s status and health information instead of treating every warning as a network failure. YouTube’s API documents stream statuses including active, created, error, inactive, and ready, and exposes diagnostics under status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[]. See the LiveStreams API reference.
YouTube’s stream health guidance covers issues such as missing audio or video, unsupported codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and insufficient video data. For the listed long or overlong GOP issues, YouTube says keyframe frequency should be four seconds or less. Its videoCodec diagnostic identifies H.264 as the supported video codec. These are media-configuration checks; by themselves, they do not show that the network connection failed.
5. Diagnose by the stage that fails

For useful diagnosis, capture the exact encoder error, output from the TCP and TLS checks, the applicable cloud and host firewall rules, and YouTube’s current status and health details. A test result from one layer cannot establish that the next layer works.

Is Bangalore itself responsible?
The official YouTube and DigitalOcean documentation cited here describes general RTMPS and firewall behavior; it does not establish that DigitalOcean’s Bangalore region blocks YouTube RTMPS or that a regional incident is active. Treat the region as context, not a diagnosis. Identifying the cause on a particular droplet requires its live configuration and error output.
