If your encoder says it is live but viewers in India see your YouTube stream as offline, first check whether YouTube is receiving the feed, whether the scheduled event has been published, and whether the viewer watch page opens. An encoder’s “started” indicator alone does not confirm that viewers can watch. Use the status and error details in YouTube Live Control Room to choose the next check; viewer location by itself does not establish an India-specific cause.
1. Check YouTube’s stream status and publication state
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Select the correct stream or scheduled event, then read its stream-health status and any accompanying error details. YouTube’s Live stream metrics guidance makes the status message a better starting point than repeatedly changing encoder settings without evidence.
- Look for the preview. Confirm that the feed appears in Live Control Room. If it does not, YouTube may not be receiving the expected video even if the encoder reports that it has started.
- Publish a scheduled event when required. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and use Go live if the flow requires it. Sending a feed from the encoder and making an event live for viewers are separate steps. YouTube’s stream creation guidance describes the live-event workflow.
- Test the viewer page. Open the channel or event watch page yourself, preferably on a mobile device as well as a desktop browser. Confirm that the intended event—not an older stream or a different scheduled event—is selected.
If the status message identifies an ingest or configuration problem, follow that message before moving on. If the preview and status appear healthy but viewers still report offline, check whether the issue is confined to publication or to particular viewers.

2. Verify the RTMP destination and stream key
Compare the server URL and stream key configured in your encoder with the current values shown in Live Control Room. Check for a stale key, a copied value with extra spaces, or a destination field pointing to another service or event.

- If the encoder reports an error starting or connecting, copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s live stream settings and troubleshooting guidance cover these settings.
- Do not reset the key as a blanket remedy when the encoder already reports a successful connection. First use YouTube’s status and error details to establish whether the key or destination is actually implicated.
3. Check the encoder’s actual output
A successful start message does not prove that the encoder is producing usable video and audio throughout the broadcast. Inspect its preview and status, and check a local recording or archive if one is available. Confirm that the stream contains movement and the audio expected in the live program.

- Update the encoder to its latest available version.
- Check whether CPU load is high enough to cause dropped frames, pauses, or missing output.
- Compare the encoder preview with the local recording, if available, to see whether the defect is already present before YouTube ingest.
- If the encoder output looks healthy, proceed to the outbound upload test rather than making unrelated changes to the video settings.
4. Test upload capacity and connection stability
Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends about 20% more upload capacity than the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Other people or devices sharing a home or office connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder; connection disruptions can also interrupt a stream. See YouTube’s network guidance.
- Add the bitrate requirements for the active primary and backup streams, if you use both.
- Compare that total with a test of the connection’s available upload capacity while the network is being used normally.
- Leave approximately 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends; a result that barely matches the bitrate may not leave enough margin for competing traffic or fluctuations.
- If the connection appears unstable, try a wired Ethernet connection as a diagnostic comparison. It can help isolate a wireless-path problem, but it will not fix an unpublished event, an incorrect key, or an encoder configuration error.
5. Find out whether the problem affects the stream or individual viewers
Ask affected viewers whether the watch page loads, whether playback works on another device, and whether they get the same result using a different connection or provider. Compare reports from viewers on independent networks.

- One viewer or one connection is affected: check that viewer’s device, network, browser or app, and access to the watch page. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance recognizes that device and network conditions can affect playback.
- Many viewers on different connections report the same failure: return to Live Control Room and the encoder output. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance notes that widespread reports across different connections may point to an encoder issue.
- The watch page itself is unavailable: verify the event’s publication state and that you are sharing the correct page, rather than treating a local playback failure as an ingest problem.
The official YouTube guidance cited here is general; it does not establish a special India-only cause or provide an incidence rate for this exact symptom. If Live Control Room shows a regional or account-specific error, use that exact message for a separate diagnosis rather than inferring a cause from the viewers’ location.

6. Validate video and audio settings when the evidence points to ingest
Do not copy a bitrate from an unrelated setup. YouTube’s current encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds. The page supports up to 60 fps and gives bitrate recommendations that vary by codec, resolution and frame rate.

| Configuration reference | YouTube recommendation | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Use this as YouTube’s recommended setting for this specific codec, resolution and frame rate—not as a universal bitrate. |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | Use this recommendation only for the listed configuration; consult YouTube’s table for other formats. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Check the encoder’s keyframe setting against YouTube’s stated limit. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate where configuring an encoder for the documented recommendation. |
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers and devices. A setting that differs from the recommended configuration should be investigated when the stream-health details or output quality point to it—not changed randomly as a first response.
Common failure patterns and what to do
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder says started, but there is no preview in Live Control Room | Ingest, destination URL or key | Read YouTube’s health details, then compare the encoder’s exact URL and key with the selected event. |
| Preview appears, but the scheduled watch page remains offline | Event publication state | Confirm the correct event is selected and use Go live after preview when the scheduled flow requires it. |
| Encoder reports a connection or start error | Key, server URL or encoder configuration | Check the current key and destination in Live Control Room; replace the key only when the error makes it relevant. |
| Video or audio is defective in the encoder preview or local recording | Encoder output, settings or system load | Check the source, encoder version, CPU load and relevant output settings before blaming viewer networks. |
| Encoder output looks good but the feed drops or becomes unstable | Available outbound upload or network stability | Measure upload capacity, account for primary and backup bitrates, reduce competing traffic, and compare with a wired connection. |
| Some viewers can watch while others cannot | Viewer device, app or connection | Compare the watch page on another device and independent network before changing the encoder. |
