YouTube RTMP Stream Health Warnings: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

A yellow or red YouTube Live health warning identifies a detected problem with your incoming stream—not automatically a bad internet connection. Open Live Control Room, read the full message and timestamp, then match the warning to the relevant encoder setting. Red warnings are critical and may stop an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow warnings are moderate and may degrade quality. YouTube explains the warning levels and error messages.

What a YouTube stream health warning means

YouTube’s Live Control Room displays stream errors beside the Health Indicator, with timestamps. The message can remain visible while the underlying problem persists. The indicator reports detected issues with the stream; it does not necessarily identify the cause of every viewer’s playback problem. Start with the exact text, not just its color.

  • Red: critical; it may inhibit the event from starting or cause viewers to have problems.
  • Yellow: moderate; it may degrade event quality.

Warnings can concern format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframe frequency, resolution, or mismatched primary and backup streams. An “incorrect format” message may specify the container, audio codec, video codec, or codec profile. Use the full message to narrow the fix.

Fix the warning in a reliable order

  1. Open Live Control Room. Find the Health Indicator and copy the entire warning and timestamp. Note whether it is red or yellow. You can also review YouTube’s live stream metrics and status context.
  2. Inspect the matching encoder settings. Check protocol and container, codec and profile, audio and video stream count, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and—if you use failover—primary/backup parity.
  3. Compare the encoder to the selected ingestion configuration. Use the current YouTube bitrate table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. If your available upload capacity cannot sustain the selected resolution, reduce the resolution and choose its corresponding bitrate.
  4. Check the encoder preview and local output. If the picture or sound is already poor there, inspect source routing, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local recording. Update the encoder software if it is out of date; trying another encoder can help isolate a software-specific issue.
  5. Test the outbound connection if local output looks healthy. Run a connection speed test and assess stability. Ask affected viewers whether the problem is limited to one device, shared network, or appears across unrelated networks. Contact your ISP if the outbound connection test points to a network issue.
  6. For an RTMPS connection error, verify the RTMPS details. Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, check the protocol and server name, and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. If the URL is correct but SSL or timeout errors persist, try port 443 where appropriate. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
  7. Change one relevant setting at a time, then recheck health. Test before the event using representative audio and moving video, not only a static screen.

Common warning messages and their fixes

Warning family What it can indicate What to check or change
Incorrect stream format, unsupported codec, or container The ingested container, codec, or profile does not match the selected configuration. Read the specific sub-message and confirm the protocol, container, video codec, audio codec, and profile. For the incorrect-format case described on YouTube’s error page, it asks for H.264 video and AAC audio; its general guide also lists other RTMP/RTMPS options. Follow the warning and your ingestion configuration.
Incorrect bitrate The bitrate may not match the selected resolution and ingestion entry, or may fall outside the recommended range. Use the current YouTube table row for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. If your upload capacity is inadequate, lower the resolution and use the matching bitrate.
Incorrect audio settings There may be no audio stream, multiple streams, an unsupported channel count, or an unsuitable sample rate or bitrate. Send one audio stream; use mono or stereo; check the exact warning’s codec, sample rate, and bitrate. YouTube’s general guidance recommends 128 Kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz.
Incorrect video settings There may be no video stream, multiple streams, interlaced video, or an excessive frame rate. Send one progressive video stream within the supported frame rate. If you change frame rate, adjust the keyframe interval so keyframes remain two seconds apart.
Incorrect keyframe frequency or GOP Keyframes may be too close together or too far apart; GOP configuration can also affect transcoding. Set a two-second keyframe interval, do not exceed four seconds, and use Closed GOP if configurable. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames.
Incorrect video size or resolution The encoded dimensions may differ from the resolution selected in ingestion settings or be unsupported for that configuration. Set encoder width and height to match the selected resolution. If connection capacity is the constraint, lower the resolution and select its corresponding bitrate.
Primary/backup stream mismatch Failover streams may use incompatible settings. Match resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, channel count, and audio codec across both streams.
Encoder start or connection failure The encoder may be unable to start or connect because of the key, URL, protocol, or software support. Re-copy the stream key from Live Control Room, update the encoder, and verify the URL and protocol. For RTMPS SSL or timeout errors, check the RTMPS URL, try port 443 when appropriate, and confirm RTMPS support.

Recommended YouTube RTMP/RTMPS settings

YouTube’s current encoder guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. The exact warning and selected ingestion configuration matter; do not assume every combination applies to every setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guide.

For H.264 RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s guide lists these recommended video bitrates. They are YouTube-published settings on the page accessed October 3, 2026—not independent performance benchmarks.

Resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

The full YouTube table varies by codec and includes minimum as well as recommended rates. Use its row for your specific setup rather than extrapolating from these examples.

Diagnose picture, sound, and connection problems separately

If the encoder preview is already bad

Investigate the source and encoder first: check that audio and video are routed correctly, look for encoder errors or high CPU load, and inspect a local recording. If local output is poor, changing internet connections alone is unlikely to address the underlying source or encoding problem.

If the encoder preview and local recording are healthy

Test outbound internet speed and stability. The pattern among affected viewers offers context: an issue on one device may be local to that viewer; reports limited to one shared network suggest a shared-network path; reports across unrelated networks make a broader stream or delivery issue more plausible. These patterns help focus diagnosis but do not prove a specific cause.

If only the YouTube health indicator shows a configuration warning

Correct the named setting against the selected ingestion configuration and the applicable encoder guide. For example, a bitrate warning calls for checking the matching codec/resolution/frame-rate entry, while a keyframe warning calls for checking cadence and GOP settings.
