YouTube’s auto-start setting handles only the last step—it cannot turn on your PC or open OBS.
How automatic recovery works
A successful recovery depends on several separate stages. A failure at any one of them can leave the channel offline even if the other stages work.

- Power returns. The PC and, if affected, the router and modem or ONT receive power.
- The PC starts. This requires a power-restoration setting supported by the computer’s firmware.
- The internet is ready. Network equipment reconnects and the internet link becomes usable.
- OBS launches. It must open in the right Windows account or session.
- OBS sends the feed. Its YouTube service, server and stream key must be valid, and the video and audio sources must be available.
- YouTube starts the broadcast. This depends on the channel’s auto-start setting or a person pressing Go Live.
- You verify the result. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room; a connected encoder alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.
There is no single universal switch that performs all of these steps. Firmware options and startup behavior vary by PC, Windows version, OBS version and account configuration, so test the actual machine you rely on.
Configure the PC and network to recover
1. Check what lost power
Work out whether the outage affected only the streaming PC or also the router, modem or optical network terminal (ONT). When power returns, wait until the network equipment has restarted and the internet connection is available. A PC that starts before the network is ready may make an initial OBS connection attempt too soon.

2. Set the computer’s AC power behavior
Some desktop PCs and motherboards offer a firmware option controlling what the computer does when AC power returns—for example, whether it stays off or powers on. The name, location and availability of that control vary by model. Check the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions for your exact machine; there is no confirmed universal BIOS or UEFI menu path to give here.
Change firmware settings carefully, and do not assume that a scheduled Windows restart is equivalent to restoring power after the PC has been shut down by an outage.

3. Arrange for OBS to launch
Configure OBS to open automatically using a Windows startup mechanism supported by your system. Confirm that it launches under the Windows account and session used for streaming, and that any required sources and settings are available there. Startup shortcuts and Task Scheduler are sometimes discussed as approaches in OBS community forums, but those discussions are not universal, current instructions for every Windows setup. Verify the method against your Windows version and test it after a normal reboot before relying on it.
4. Account for late network recovery
If the PC and OBS start before the router or internet link is ready, a failed first connection may not recover as you expect. A delayed OBS launch or a tested retry mechanism may help, but behavior depends on the system and software versions. The OBS forum discussion of startup after a reboot is community advice, not an official guarantee. Do not assume OBS will retry indefinitely: test whether your configuration reconnects after both a brief interruption and a delayed network start.

Check OBS and YouTube’s stream settings
Verify the encoder destination and key
YouTube describes a stream key as the credential the encoder uses to send a feed to the stream. A power cut by itself is not evidence that the key needs to be reset. In OBS, check that the selected YouTube service and server or URL are correct and that the key matches the stream you intend to send. If you reset the key or OBS reports a key error, copy the current key from YouTube into OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or logs.
Choose YouTube auto-start deliberately
YouTube’s auto-start setting controls whether a broadcast starts when YouTube detects an encoder feed. It does not power on a computer, launch OBS or make a failed internet connection work.

Check the setting for the stream you use and confirm the actual behavior with a private or unlisted test. The encoder feed arriving and the viewer-facing broadcast starting are distinct events.
Test recovery before depending on it
YouTube recommends setting up and testing the encoder in advance, checking the preview and stream health, and testing failover rather than assuming backup behavior works. Use a non-public test and check each stage separately:
- Restart Windows normally and confirm OBS launches in the correct account.
- With the test stream available, briefly interrupt the internet connection and see whether OBS reconnects and YouTube reports a healthy feed.
- If your hardware permits a controlled test, check whether the PC starts after power is restored. Avoid creating an unsafe or disruptive outage just to test this.
- Confirm that the correct video and audio sources return, the Live Control Room preview appears, and the broadcast starts as intended under your auto-start choice.
A UPS can help keep selected equipment powered through a short interruption, but it does not configure the PC’s firmware, launch OBS or protect against an ISP outage. Choose one based on the actual connected load, required runtime, compatible plugs and output, battery replacement and local service. A UPS is a supplement to recovery automation, not a substitute for testing it.
Troubleshoot the point where recovery stopped
- The PC stays off after power returns: Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s guidance for an AC-restoration setting. Its existence and behavior are model-specific.
- The PC starts, but OBS does not: Check the startup configuration, Windows account and session. Test after a normal reboot and verify that OBS launches in the environment used for streaming.
- OBS opens but will not connect: Confirm internet access first, then check OBS connection status or logs, upload capacity, and the YouTube service, server and key. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance separates encoder problems from outbound-network problems.
- OBS connects, but YouTube does not go live: Check whether auto-start is off and the stream is waiting for a manual Go Live action. Confirm that Live Control Room is showing the intended stream and that OBS is using its current key.
- The feed connects but the picture or sound is missing: Check the source in OBS separately. A camera or capture device may not reinitialize just because OBS reconnects to YouTube; test source recovery on the actual equipment.
- OBS looks healthy, but YouTube reports poor health or viewers see interruptions: Check Live Control Room’s stream health, upload capacity and other devices using the connection. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom; this is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measured guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
- Dropped frames or disconnections continue: OBS identifies an unstable connection or insufficient bitrate capacity as possible causes. Check the outbound path to the ingest server rather than relying only on the local OBS preview.
