YouTube Music has started rolling out a small but noticeable library update: My Mixes are being descriptively named, so you don’t just see generic titles. Instead, mix names aim to reflect the style, mood, or artist focus you’ve been feeding into your recommendations.
If you rely on My Mixes for workouts, commuting, or “press play and let it handle the rest,” better names mean less guessing and faster tapping—especially when you have multiple mixes going at once.

This guide covers what changed, where to find it, how to manage mixes across iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web, and what to do when the new naming doesn’t show up right away.
What does descriptively naming My Mixes mean
Historically, My Mixes could appear with names that were less specific than what you were actually listening to. The updated behavior focuses on making each mix title more informative—typically by reflecting the dominant theme behind the mix.

- JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
- Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
- Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
- Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
In practice, that means you’ll usually see mix names that are more descriptive of:
- Genre or style (for example, “Chill,” “Workout,” “Indie,” depending on your listening)
- Artist or artist cluster (where the mix is strongly anchored to a particular creator or group)
- Mood/tempo (lighter, energetic, late-night vibes, etc.)
Because recommendations are personalized, the exact naming you see can differ from someone else’s—even with the same update—based on what YouTube Music has learned from your listening and activity.
Why this matters for your mixes
Descriptive naming helps in three very practical ways.
Recommended Free Tools
- Faster selection: you can pick the right mix for the moment without opening each one.
- Cleaner library management: it’s easier to tell which mix is which when you have multiple entries under My Mixes.
- Better continuity: when your listening evolves, the mix title has a better chance of reflecting the new direction.
It’s also a usability improvement: playlist titles are one of the fastest cues in the YouTube Music UI, so changing naming from vague to descriptive reduces taps and friction.
Where to see the change (and what to expect)
You’ll typically encounter the new naming in the My Mixes area of the app’s Library and/or a Mixes hub. The exact placement can vary slightly by platform and app version.
Expect one or more of the following behaviors:
- Updated mix titles for existing My Mixes entries.
- Newly created My Mixes starting with more descriptive names from the start.
- Gradual rollout across accounts—some users see it sooner than others.
Check if you have the update
You don’t usually get a “feature toggle” for naming improvements, so the most reliable approach is to check what titles you see right now.
- Open YouTube Music.
- Go to Library.
- Find My Mixes.
- Look for mix titles that sound more specific than before (genre, mood, artist focus).
If you see a mix name that clearly reflects your listening theme, you’ve likely received the update.

How to manage My Mixes when names change
Most of the time, descriptive naming is automatic. Still, you may want to tidy up or decide which mixes to keep for different routines.
Below are platform-specific steps to manage My Mixes so the experience stays consistent.
On iPhone and iPad (iOS)
Use the built-in edit and management options from the mix’s menu.
- Open the YouTube Music app.
- Tap Library (bottom tab).
- Tap My Mixes.
- Tap the three-dot menu next to a mix (or open the mix details page and look for the menu).
- Choose an option such as Remove from library or Play (menu wording can differ by mix type).
If the descriptive names don’t show immediately, give the app a moment after opening Library—then use a quick app restart and try again.
On Android
The Android UI mirrors iOS closely, so management is mostly about finding the mix menu.
- Open YouTube Music.
- Tap Library.
- Open My Mixes.
- Tap the three-dot icon on the mix you want to change.
- Select the relevant action (commonly Remove from library or similar library controls).
After any changes, scroll back to the top of My Mixes and wait for the list to finish refreshing.
On desktop (web browser)
Desktop sometimes shows the updated titles sooner because the Library data fetch can be less cached than mobile.

- Hover a mix to reveal options, then click the three-dot menu if available.
- Use library actions if you need to remove a mix.
If you’re testing the rollout, compare the titles on desktop and mobile to confirm whether the change has hit your account yet.
If the new names do not appear
Because YouTube Music features roll out gradually, it’s normal for some accounts to lag. That said, there are a few things worth checking before you assume you’re not updated.
Common causes
- Staged rollout: your account may not be in the first batch.
- App caching: mobile apps can keep an older Library snapshot until a refresh.
- Outdated app version: older releases may not render the latest naming strings properly.
- Network or sign-in hiccups: partial sync can delay updated metadata.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Update the app: install the latest YouTube Music build from the App Store or Google Play.
- Force a refresh: close the app completely and reopen (mobile), or hard refresh the page (desktop).
- Log out and back in: if the Library looks stale across devices, sign out and sign in again.
- Check connectivity: switch Wi‑Fi ↔ mobile data and re-open My Mixes.
- Compare devices: if desktop shows descriptive names but your phone doesn’t, focus on mobile caching/sync.
- Wait it out: staged rollouts can take days, not minutes.
A practical pattern: update the app, confirm on desktop (if available), then revisit mobile. That sequence isolates whether you’re dealing with rollout timing vs UI rendering.
What happens to existing My Mixes
Descriptive naming is usually applied as metadata to your existing My Mixes, but behavior can differ during rollout. Here are the most common scenarios readers report after naming changes.
Case A: your mix name updates automatically
You’ll see titles change in place without any action from you. Playback behavior and the mix content usually remain consistent—only the name is different.
If you were using a mix name as a shortcut for a routine, this is the “best” outcome.
Case B: names stay old until you re-open or refresh
Sometimes your app loads a cached version of your Library. Closing and reopening YouTube Music, or refreshing desktop, typically pulls the latest naming labels.

If you notice the old name still appears, don’t remove and re-add immediately. Wait one refresh cycle first.
Case C: duplicates or near-duplicates show up
Rollouts can occasionally create a brief mismatch where one list item gets a new title while another remains in the UI temporarily. This can look like a duplicate but is often a sync artifact.

If you see two very similar mixes at the same time, confirm by checking the mix’s content for overlap. Then wait a bit after refreshing or switching devices before you delete anything.
Comparing My Mixes naming vs other YouTube Music surfaces
It helps to know how naming standards vary across YouTube Music features.
| Surface | How titles usually behave | What to rely on |
|---|---|---|
| My Mixes | Personalized; titles may change as recommendations evolve | Theme inferred from the name + the recent tracks |
| Library playlists you created | Usually stable unless you edit them | Your own naming convention |
| Radio | Often tied to a seed artist, song, or station name | Seed and track flow rather than the title alone |
| Up Next / recommendations | Highly dynamic | Context and freshness, not the label |
The key difference is that My Mixes are meant to track your listening behavior over time. So even with descriptive naming, the “why” behind a mix title can shift gradually.
Best practices to keep your mixes useful
Descriptive naming works best when the underlying recommendations are based on consistent listening signals. A few habits keep My Mixes aligned with what you want.

(Skipping too aggressively can confuse the theme.)
- Use Likes and Saves: when a track hits the vibe you want, use YouTube Music’s feedback to reinforce it.
- Rotate by routine: if you have one mix for mornings and another for late-night, use the updated descriptive names as your quick selectors.
- Remove mixes you don’t use: if descriptive naming reveals duplicates or mixes drifting away from your intent, remove the clutter from Library.
Frequently asked questions
Will descriptive naming change the music in my My Mixes?
Usually, the change is about the label. The actual mix selection is still driven by your listening history and YouTube Music’s recommendation system.

Do I need YouTube Music Premium for My Mixes naming to update?
My Mixes are part of the service experience that many users can access. However, rollout and feature availability can vary by account and subscription state, so the safest answer is to check your Library for the new titles.
Why does my friend see different My Mixes names?
Because My Mixes are personalized, descriptive titles reflect each user’s listening patterns. Two people with different music habits will see different mix themes and therefore different descriptive names.
Can I rename My Mixes manually?
Typically, My Mixes naming is controlled by YouTube Music. If the UI doesn’t offer an edit option for a mix in your Library, you can manage it indirectly by adjusting listening behavior and removing the mix if needed.

Bottom Line
YouTube Music’s move to descriptively name My Mixes is a quality-of-life update: it reduces guesswork, makes your Library easier to skim, and helps you pick the right mix faster.
If you don’t see it yet, update the app, refresh your Library, and compare desktop vs mobile—rollouts can take time, and a cached UI is often the real culprit.
