If a copyright removal request took the stream down, the main remaining options are to submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification, ask the claimant to retract the request, or—if you meet YouTube’s conditions—complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire. Waiting out a strike does not restore the removed stream.
First, check what YouTube rejected
A rejected Content ID appeal is not itself a copyright strike. A Content ID claim concerns a claim on material in a video; a strike follows a copyright removal request that YouTube considers valid. Check the exact notice and your channel’s copyright status before choosing a next step. YouTube describes the distinction and process in its copyright strike guidance and copyright removal request guidance.

- Appeal rejected, but no removal notice or strike: You may still be dealing with a Content ID claim. Do not treat it as a strike unless YouTube says a copyright removal request resulted in one.
- Stream removed and strike applied: You are at the copyright removal stage. YouTube lists counter notification, claimant retraction, and eligible strike expiration as possible routes.
- Counter notification pending or rejected: Check the relevant notice and the counter notification section below; the available next step depends on why it was rejected and whether the claimant has taken legal action.
What options remain after a livestream is removed?

When and how to submit a counter notification
A counter notification is for content removed by mistake or misidentification, including content you believe qualifies for an exception such as fair use. It makes legal statements and may require you to share identifying information. It is not simply a way to disagree with a claimant or reverse a rejected Content ID appeal. Read YouTube’s counter notification instructions and assess whether you can truthfully meet its requirements.

- Review the removal notice and account status. Confirm that YouTube removed the livestream through a copyright removal request and applied a strike. Keep the notice and relevant records.
- Assess the basis for your use. Gather relevant information such as licenses or permissions, the source and nature of the material, and why you believe the removal was mistaken or the use qualifies for an exception. The platform notice alone does not decide whether your use was lawful.
- Use YouTube’s current counter notification process. Provide the legally required information and a clear explanation of your right to use the material. YouTube may reject a notice that lacks required information. If it is rejected for that reason, YouTube says you can submit a new counter notification with the required information.
- Consider advice before filing if uncertain. The consequences and legal standards depend on the facts and applicable jurisdiction. YouTube allows an authorized representative to submit a counter notification, too.
What happens after YouTube forwards it?
If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. If YouTube receives no such evidence in that period, the content may be reinstated unless you deleted it. This is a process deadline, not a guarantee that a particular stream will return. YouTube also says it may remove content again if it later receives evidence of legal action, including after the deadline or after reinstatement; a court decision may affect the strike status. Can you ask the claimant to retract the takedown?
You can contact the claimant and ask them to retract the copyright removal request. If they agree and submit a retraction, YouTube identifies that as a way to resolve a copyright strike. A request is voluntary: the claimant may decline, and contacting them does not itself remove the strike. Use the contact details in YouTube’s notice or account process, and keep your communication factual.
What if you do nothing and wait?
YouTube says a copyright strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. Expiration clears the strike under those conditions; it does not reinstate the removed stream. Three copyright strikes within 90 days make a channel subject to termination. If the removal is scheduled, act before it takes effect
Some copyright removal requests are scheduled, giving the uploader seven days to act before removal becomes effective. Where this process applies, YouTube says available actions can include seeking a retraction or, in the relevant circumstances, canceling an appeal. Check the deadline and choices in the notice; once removal is effective and a strike is applied, the post-removal options above apply. See YouTube’s copyright removal request information.

What to check before choosing
- Is the notice about a Content ID claim, a removal request, or a counter notification?
- Has YouTube actually removed the livestream and applied a strike?
- Was the stream licensed, or do you have a specific basis to believe the removal was mistaken or the use is legally excepted?
- Has a counter notification already been filed, forwarded, or rejected—and what reason does YouTube give?
- Is there a scheduled-removal deadline, or has the claimant provided evidence of legal action?
- How many active strikes does the channel have, and have you completed Copyright School?
YouTube’s help pages describe general platform procedures, not a ruling on whether a particular livestream use was lawful. The material used, any license, your jurisdiction, and the notices already exchanged can change what makes sense. If you are unsure, consider legal advice before making legal statements.
