A rejected Content ID dispute is not itself a strike and may still leave you eligible to appeal. If a counter notification was rejected for missing information, YouTube says you can submit a corrected one—but only if you believe the removal was mistaken or misidentified.
YouTube’s procedures described here, including counter notifications, involve U.S. copyright law. If you are elsewhere, check the notice and the law that applies in your jurisdiction. This is general information, not legal advice.

Identify what YouTube rejected
Open YouTube Studio and read the video’s copyright status, then compare it with the rejection email. The terms matter because a Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or strike.
- Content ID dispute rejected: The claim remains on the video. Studio may still offer an appeal if you believe you have the necessary rights or a valid copyright exception applies.
- Appeal rejected: The claimant may submit a copyright removal request. If YouTube receives a valid request, it removes the video and applies a strike.
- Copyright removal request or strike: Your video has been removed, or YouTube has notified you of a removal and its consequences. Options can include asking the claimant to retract the request or submitting a valid counter notification if the removal was mistaken.
- Counter notification rejected: YouTube says its email will explain missing required information. You may submit a new counter notification containing all legally required information if you believe the removal was mistaken or the content was misidentified.
YouTube says claimants have up to 30 days to respond to an initial Content ID dispute and seven days to respond to an appeal. A rejected appeal can lead to a removal request; it is not itself the same thing as a strike. YouTube Help: Dispute a Content ID claim

If your Content ID dispute was rejected
Check whether Studio offers an appeal
If you still believe you own or have licensed the material, or that a copyright exception applies, check the video’s options in YouTube Studio for appeal eligibility and the displayed deadline. Proceed only if you have a sound basis to contest the claim. An appeal is a further step in the Content ID process, not a counter notification.
Understand the risk before appealing
If an appeal is rejected, the claimant can submit a copyright removal request. A valid removal request takes the video down and gives the channel a copyright strike. For a scheduled removal request following an appeal, YouTube gives you seven days to act. During that period, you can cancel the appeal to avoid a strike, though the Content ID claim remains, or seek a retraction from the claimant. Check the notice for the actual deadline and available actions. YouTube Help: Copyright strike basics · YouTube Help: Scheduled copyright removal requests

If your appeal was rejected and your livestream was taken down
Look for a copyright removal request and strike notice. A counter notification may be an option if you believe YouTube removed the video because of a mistake or misidentification, including where you believe a copyright exception applies. YouTube defines it as “a legal request to reinstate content that was removed due to a copyright removal request.” It is not an ordinary appeal, and it is shared with the claimant. Use the counter-notification process only if you believe the removal was mistaken or the content was misidentified. If you are concerned about sharing personal information, YouTube says you may use an authorized representative, such as an attorney. Consider legal advice before submitting a legal request if you are uncertain about your position.

If YouTube rejected your counter notification
Read YouTube’s email for the specific reason it rejected the submission. YouTube says that when required information is missing, you can submit a new counter notification with all legally required information. Correct the identified omission; do not treat this as an unlimited appeal process or submit a counter notification if you do not believe the removal was mistaken or the content misidentified. YouTube Help: Submit a copyright counter notification
If YouTube accepts and forwards a valid counter notification, it says the claimant has 10 U.S. business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content down. If the claimant does not do so, YouTube says it will reinstate the content unless you deleted it. The U.S. Copyright Office describes the Section 512 restoration period as not less than 10 and not more than 14 business days, absent the specified notice of court action. YouTube’s operational 10-U.S.-business-day statement and the statutory range are related but not interchangeable. Other options after a copyright strike
| Option | When it may fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Ask the claimant to retract the removal request | You believe the issue can be resolved directly with the person or organization that submitted the request. | A retraction can address the removal request. Contact details and instructions may be in YouTube’s notice. |
| Submit a valid counter notification | You believe the removal was mistaken or the material was misidentified, including because an applicable copyright exception may cover the use. | This is a legal request shared with the claimant and can lead to a legal response. Consider getting legal advice if you are unsure. |
| Complete Copyright School and wait | You do not plan to challenge the removal. | YouTube says the strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School. Expiry clears the strike but does not restore the removed video. |
Deleting a video after an ordinary strike does not resolve that strike. A scheduled takedown has a distinct seven-day period in which action may prevent a strike; follow the specific notice rather than assuming the ordinary-strike rule applies. What this means for an active or archived livestream
YouTube says removing an active live stream for copyright can result in a strike and a seven-day restriction on live streaming. A Content ID claim on an archived stream typically does not itself create a strike. Check the specific notice: the status and consequences depend on whether YouTube acted on the active broadcast or on its archived recording. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams

When to get legal advice
YouTube advises seeking legal advice if you are unsure about an appeal decision. A lawyer can assess your evidence, the material used, the relevant jurisdiction, and the deadlines before you submit a counter notification or pursue another legal route.
For certain U.S. copyright disputes, the U.S. Copyright Office identifies federal court and the voluntary Copyright Claims Board as possible routes. The Office describes the Board as handling disputes up to $30,000 total. Neither route is suitable or available for every dispute, and the appropriate choice depends on the facts and applicable law. Keep future livestreams from repeating the same rights problem
Before rebroadcasting recorded material, confirm that you own or have permission for every relevant element, including music, footage, images, and third-party recordings. Keep licenses and permissions somewhere you can retrieve them, and review the copyright terms for any material you plan to use. A livestream format does not by itself create permission to use copyrighted content.
