Find the exact stop time, then compare YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages with encoder logs, CPU load, local recording behavior, the outbound connection, and the stream’s auto-stop setting. Those checks can narrow down whether the encoder, connection, or stream configuration was involved—but the cause is not known until you inspect the evidence from your event.
Start with the time the stream stopped
Record three times if you can: when viewers noticed playback stop, when YouTube marked the event ended, and when the encoder stopped sending content or lost its connection. They may differ. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the stream health indicator and its messages; YouTube says messages include timestamps. Compare the last relevant message with the encoder’s logs and the time its outgoing content changed.
YouTube classifies red errors as critical; they may inhibit an event or cause user problems. Yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Treat the message as a clue to investigate, not proof by itself that a particular component failed. See YouTube’s live streaming error-message guidance.
Distinguish the three likely areas to investigate

These are diagnostic categories, not confirmed explanations for your stream. YouTube’s guides explain what to check but cannot identify the cause without your event’s messages, logs, settings, and connection results.

Check the encoder and local recording
- Check the encoder software and its own error messages. Confirm the software is current, then review logs and dashboard errors around the recorded stop time.
- Inspect the encoder preview. Check whether the video and sound looked and sounded normal. A poor preview can point to the audio or video sources routed into the encoder.
- Review CPU load. Look for a spike or other abnormal reading at the time of the incident, alongside the encoder’s own logs.
- Inspect the local archive. Check whether the recording is intact and whether its file size continued growing. If the local production continued while the YouTube event stopped, that is useful evidence to compare with the health messages and encoder logs.
- If these checks do not expose a problem, test another encoder. YouTube includes trying another encoder among its troubleshooting steps; it is a diagnostic test, not a reason to buy replacement equipment before you know what failed.

Test the outbound connection if the encoder looks healthy
If the encoder preview and logs do not show a problem, test the strength of the outbound internet connection. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if the test reveals a connection problem. The available guidance does not establish Wi-Fi, a router, an ISP outage, or any one network component as the cause of an individual overnight stop.

Inspect auto-stop and how the event ended
In YouTube Studio, inspect the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. If you created the stream using “Reuse settings,” YouTube says those selections carry over from the previous stream, so a setting may persist even if you did not choose it specifically for this event. Follow YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings.
For an encoder stream, stopping the content sent by the encoder ends the stream; YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions also describe clicking “End stream” and stopping encoder content. Compare what happened at the event level with what happened at the encoder: did the encoder stop, crash, lose its schedule, or keep sending content after YouTube showed the event as ended? YouTube’s encoder setup and ending instructions describe these steps.

Check settings only against evidence
Do not change bitrate, resolution, or keyframe settings simply because the failure happened overnight. YouTube advises selecting stream quality that is reliable for the internet connection and testing upload bitrate. Its encoder guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency, which should not exceed four seconds. Compare your actual settings with the Live Control Room errors and encoder evidence before treating a configuration as the cause. During a stream, YouTube’s instruction is: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.
Do not mistake archiving guidance for a stop limit
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That describes archive handling; it does not say that a stream stops when it reaches 12 hours. Check the event’s actual duration and whether it appears in the Live tab, but investigate the stop separately using its health messages, encoder behavior, connection evidence, and settings.

Preserve evidence before changing anything
- Save encoder logs covering the time before and after the stop.
- Record the Live Control Room messages and their timestamps.
- Note CPU readings and whether the local archive was intact and still growing.
- Record whether the encoder continued sending content and what YouTube showed for the event.
- Capture the auto-start and auto-stop selections and any outbound connection test result.
Keeping these details together makes it easier to compare the same incident across YouTube, the encoder, and the connection rather than changing equipment or settings based on the word “overnight.”
