Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf renaming a video made your YouTube loop stream go offline, first check the path saved in OBS: it may still point to the file’s old name or location. Repoint the source or playlist entry to the renamed file, then confirm playback in OBS preview. If preview works but YouTube still shows the stream as offline, troubleshoot the encoder-to-YouTube connection separately.
First identify which kind of playlist you renamed
“Playlist file” can mean two different things, and the fix depends on which one your setup uses:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A local OBS source or VLC playlist: OBS is trying to open a file on your computer. Renaming or moving that file can leave the source pointing to its former path.
- An HLS media playlist: An encoder uploads a
.m3uor.m3u8playlist and media segments to YouTube. The playlist contains references to the segments, so its filenames and paths must match the uploaded files.
For an ordinary OBS loop, start with the local-source repair below. HLS is a separate ingest method; its requirements do not automatically apply to a local OBS source.

- Open the scene containing the loop. In OBS, select the scene and locate the source that plays the video. A single file is commonly a Media Source; a list of files may be set up as VLC Video.
- Open that source’s properties. For a Media Source, browse to the video’s current location and select the renamed file. For VLC Video, update the affected entry in its playlist to the file’s current path. Apply or save the change.
- Check local playback. Watch the OBS preview and confirm the expected video plays, with audio if the file has audio. This verifies the local media path; it does not verify that YouTube is receiving the stream.
- Check YouTube if the preview works but the stream is offline. Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream and encoder status. OBS identifies the encoder-to-destination connection as a separate source of streaming problems. Check that connection rather than continuing to change a path that now plays correctly.
OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video as distinct source types. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guidance.

If you renamed an HLS playlist or segment
When an encoder sends HLS directly to YouTube, check the playlist and segment references rather than an OBS local-file source. YouTube’s HLS guide says the media playlist filename must end in .m3u8 or .m3u. If a Media Segment filename includes a path component, the corresponding playlist entry must reference that same path. Compare the actual uploaded names and paths with every reference in the playlist; spelling and directory mismatches can prevent the expected segments from being found. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.
Relative segment references depend on where the playlist is located. RFC 8216, the IETF’s HTTP Live Streaming specification published in August 2017, states: “Any relative URI is considered to be relative to the URI of the Playlist that contains it.” If you move or rename the playlist, check whether those relative references still resolve from its new URI. Read RFC 8216.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview is blank or the media does not play after the rename | The local source still refers to the old path, or the playlist entry is stale. | Re-select the renamed file in Media Source properties, or edit the affected VLC Video playlist entry. Check the preview again. |
| OBS preview plays, but YouTube reports the stream offline | The local media path works; the remaining issue may be the encoder-to-YouTube connection or stream status. | Inspect encoder status and YouTube Live Control Room separately. OBS’s Help Portal discusses connection issues between the broadcaster and streaming destination. |
| HLS ingest fails after a playlist or segment rename | The playlist suffix, uploaded segment filename, path component, or relative reference may no longer match. | Check the HLS playlist filename, compare its segment references with uploaded filenames and paths, and resolve relative URIs from the playlist’s current location. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
