First, check which OBS counter is increasing: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection to YouTube’s ingest server; Frames missed due to rendering lag and Skipped frames due to encoding lag point to work your computer is struggling to render or encode. The right fix depends on that distinction. Lowering bitrate may help an overloaded network, but it will not fix a GPU that cannot render the scene.
Identify which kind of frame loss you have
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while the problem is happening. OBS labels the main failure types separately; use the counter that rises rather than treating every choppy stream as a network problem. See the OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide and its encoding performance guide.
| OBS counter | What it indicates | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) | The connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Test upload capacity, check shared network use, and compare bitrate with available bandwidth. |
| Frames missed due to rendering lag | OBS is not rendering/compositing frames fast enough, often because the GPU is under load. | Reduce rendering workload and check whether other GPU-heavy tasks are running. |
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag | The encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough with the current workload or settings. | Inspect encoder errors and system load; reduce encoding or scene demands as appropriate. |
Network drops may lead to a disconnection when severe. Rendering and encoding lag are local performance issues, even if viewers experience similar stuttering.
Fix dropped frames (network)
1. Check upload bandwidth and competing traffic
A high download speed does not show whether your upload connection can carry a live stream reliably. Test outbound bandwidth under conditions close to the broadcast, and check whether other people, devices, cloud backups, or a simultaneous backup stream are using the same connection. YouTube Help says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Its guidance is explicit: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube Help’s streaming tips.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Apply that reserve to the total bitrate of the streams sharing the connection, not just one output. If the available upload rate fluctuates, leave more margin rather than targeting its best moment.
2. Match the bitrate to the output and connection
Compare OBS’s configured bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder settings for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. The official table can change and may vary by locale, so use YouTube’s live encoder settings page for the full current recommendations. As examples from YouTube Help’s documented H.264 recommendations, 720p60 is 8 Mbps and 1080p60 is 17 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your connection can sustain them.

YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. If your upload cannot reliably support the chosen output, lower the bitrate, then lower resolution or frame rate if needed. YouTube’s error guidance also recommends reducing resolution when bandwidth cannot support the selected resolution’s bitrate: YouTube live streaming error messages.
3. Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback, not a repair
OBS can adjust bitrate dynamically when the connection is congested. That may reduce network drops, but the picture quality can fall as bitrate falls, and the feature does not fix an unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity. If you use it, still investigate the underlying network issue. OBS explains the trade-off in its network troubleshooting guide.

4. Isolate network interference carefully
If the bitrate is within capacity but the network counter still rises, work through OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps. VPNs and security software can interfere with the connection. Treat changes to those settings as controlled diagnostic tests, not guaranteed fixes: make one change at a time, test, and restore protections or settings that are not responsible. OBS advises contacting your ISP if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.
Fix rendering or encoding lag
Check the local output first
If OBS’s preview or a local recording is already choppy, that supports a local rendering or encoding problem rather than a YouTube delivery problem. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive when troubleshooting stream quality. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder guidance, alongside the OBS encoding performance guide.

Reduce rendering pressure
- Lower demanding game graphics settings or cap the game’s frame rate so OBS has GPU resources to composite the scene.
- Close only applications you know are using substantial GPU resources, then check whether the rendering-lag counter changes.
- Simplify scenes or reduce output demands if the current composition is too heavy for the system.
- On Windows, running OBS as administrator is a diagnostic step OBS suggests for some GPU overload cases. It is not a universal fix.
Reduce encoding pressure
If Skipped frames due to encoding lag rises, inspect the encoder’s own error messages and system load. Try a less demanding output configuration or encoder workload, changing one relevant setting at a time and comparing the same counter. Do not buy new hardware before confirming that encoding—not network delivery or rendering—is the bottleneck.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the fix before the next broadcast
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast.
- Check OBS Stats during the test and note whether the network, rendering, or encoding counter continues to rise.
- Review the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages in YouTube.
- Change one relevant variable at a time, repeat the representative test, and compare the same counters.
- Monitor stream health during the actual event; a successful short test cannot guarantee a changing network will remain stable.
YouTube’s recommendations on encoder settings and testing are available in its live streaming guidance. No single adjustment is guaranteed to resolve every setup, because the cause may be the local network, shared traffic, the computer’s rendering load, or its encoder workload.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fix for an OBS broadcast from a live camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay powered on at home, it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
