If YouTube removed your live stream because it contained a Hindi song, first check whether the notice says copyright removal request or Content ID claim. A copyright strike follows a removal request; the response may be a counter notification, a request for retraction, or completing Copyright School and waiting for expiry. A counter notification is a legal request—not a routine appeal—and is appropriate only if you have a supportable reason to say the removal was mistaken, the content was misidentified, or a copyright exception applies.
First confirm whether YouTube issued a strike
Open YouTube Studio and read the exact enforcement notice and the email YouTube sent. The label matters: the available action and its consequences differ for a Content ID claim and a copyright removal request. Use YouTube’s current account notice and Help instructions, since interface labels and platform rules can change.

- Content ID claim: A rights holder may monetize, track, or block a video. An appeal of a Content ID claim is not the same as a counter notification. Follow YouTube’s Content ID claim appeal process if that is what Studio shows.
- Copyright removal request: This is a legal request that can remove content and result in a copyright strike. YouTube describes a counter notification as a legal request to reinstate material removed following such a request. See About Copyright Removal Requests.
- Community Guidelines strike: This is a different enforcement category; do not use the copyright process unless the notice actually concerns copyright.
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material appearing in another live broadcast. A live stream can be interrupted or terminated. If an active stream is removed for copyright, the channel may receive a strike and live-stream access may be restricted for seven days. Check the notice to see what happened to your stream and whether YouTube imposed that restriction. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and copyright strike guidance.

Before contacting the claimant or submitting a legal request, save the notice and collect the details needed to understand what was removed and why.

- Record the claimant’s identity, the exact song and recording named, and the part of the stream where it appeared.
- Note the context: for example, whether the stream played a recording, featured a live performance, or used the song as part of commentary.
- Gather any licence, written permission, performance agreement, or correspondence that covers the use. Check whether it covers the relevant territory, YouTube, public performance or communication, livestreaming, and any archived recording.
- Keep a copy of the YouTube notice and communications with the claimant.
A Hindi song may involve separate rights in its musical composition, lyrics, and sound recording. A claimant’s identity in a notice does not, by itself, establish who owns every relevant right; nor does the information in the notice alone establish that the claimant lacks rights. Check the documents that cover the particular song and recording.
YouTube also warns that a licence may not prevent a live-stream interruption if the rights owner has not put the channel on its Content ID allowlist. If you believe your licence covers the use, contact the rights owner about the allowlist as well as addressing the strike notice; an allowlist issue does not itself resolve a removal request.

Choose between a counter notification, retraction, and waiting
The options have different purposes and risks. A counter notification challenges a removal on a supportable basis; asking for a retraction seeks the claimant’s cooperation; waiting allows a strike to expire under YouTube’s stated conditions but does not bring the removed stream back.

When and how to submit a counter notification
YouTube’s counter-notification guidance describes this as a legal request to reinstate content removed due to a copyright removal request. Consider it only if you have a genuine, supportable basis—for example, a mistaken identification, evidence that you had rights to the specific use, or facts that may bring the use within a copyright exception. Disagreeing with the claimant or wanting the stream restored is not, on its own, a basis.

- Confirm the removal: Check that Studio identifies a copyright removal request and that the stream was removed. Do not file a counter notification in place of an appeal for an ordinary Content ID claim.
- Assess your basis and evidence: Match any licence or permission to the specific composition, recording, platform, territory, and kind of use. If relying on an exception, assess the actual purpose and context rather than assuming that a short excerpt or commentary automatically qualifies.
- Read the disclosure and legal requirements: YouTube shares legally required information in the counter notification with the claimant. False information or misuse can have account or legal consequences. If you do not understand what you must submit or disclose, get advice from a qualified Indian copyright lawyer before filing.
- Use YouTube’s current submission route: YouTube says the original uploader should submit the counter notification, although an authorized representative such as an attorney may do so on the uploader’s behalf. For videos, YouTube provides submission through Studio and also by email, fax, or mail. Follow the options and instructions currently shown in your account and the Help page.
- Track the response period: After YouTube forwards the counter notification, the claimant has 10 US working days to provide evidence of legal action. If legal action is pending, the material remains removed. If the claimant does not provide that evidence, YouTube says it restores the content and removes the strike.
This is a legal process, not a guaranteed way to win a dispute. The outcome depends on the facts, rights, and any legal action; the available information cannot determine the likely outcome for a particular song or stream.
What Indian copyright law does—and does not—establish
The Government of India’s Copyright Act, 1957 addresses infringement where a person, without a licence or contrary to its conditions, exercises an exclusive right conferred on the copyright owner. Section 52(1)(a) identifies fair dealing with a work other than a computer program for specified purposes, including private or personal use, criticism or review, and reporting current events. The Government’s India Code record lists the Act as enacted on 4 June 1957 and enforced from 21 January 1958.

Those provisions do not create blanket permission to play a Hindi song in a livestream. A music performance, a commentary stream, or use of a short excerpt is not automatically covered by an exception. Whether Section 52 applies depends on the particular purpose and facts, and on the rights involved. If you are considering a counter notification based on Indian law, seek qualified legal advice where the rights or application of an exception are uncertain.
Retraction, expiry and the two different seven-day periods
Ask the claimant to retract
You can contact the person who submitted the copyright removal request and ask them to retract it. Use the claimant details in Studio, keep the message factual, and explain any relevant permission or identification error. A request for retraction is not a guaranteed resolution; it depends on the claimant.

Complete Copyright School and wait for strike expiry
YouTube says a copyright strike may expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School, subject to its strike conditions. Expiry does not restore the removed stream. YouTube also says three copyright strikes within 90 days may put the channel and associated channels at risk of termination, so check all active strikes and deadlines in Studio.
Do not confuse the seven-day timelines
Two separate seven-day rules may be relevant. When an active livestream is removed for copyright, YouTube may restrict live-stream access for seven days. Separately, a scheduled-removal notice may give a seven-day window to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. If you received a scheduled notice, follow its deadline and instructions; after removal, do not assume deleting the content will clear a strike. Check YouTube’s removal-request guidance and your specific Studio notice.
Prevent another music-related interruption
Before a future stream, confirm that you have permission for the exact music and recording in the intended livestream and any replay. Do not rely on artist credit, a consumer music subscription, a short excerpt, or a “no copyright intended” disclaimer as proof of permission; none of those facts alone establishes authorization for a livestream. If you have a licence, verify its terms and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting when appropriate.

Common problems and what to do
- Studio shows a Content ID claim, but you are preparing a counter notification: Stop and use the claim appeal process instead. A counter notification applies after a copyright removal request; see YouTube’s claim appeal instructions.
- You have permission, but the live stream was interrupted: Check that the licence covers the recording and live use, then contact the rights owner about putting the channel on its Content ID allowlist. A licence and allowlisting address different issues.
- You gave credit or used only a few seconds: Those facts alone do not prove permission or establish an exception. Reassess the rights and context before making a legal submission.
- You deleted the stream after receiving a strike: Deletion does not clear an already-applied strike. Check the notice and use one of the available routes rather than assuming deletion reverses enforcement.
- You do not know whether the claimant has the relevant rights: Do not assert that the claimant lacks rights without evidence. Review the notice and any licence or agreement, and get legal advice if a counter notification is being considered.
- You received a scheduled-removal warning: Read the deadline in that notice immediately. The pre-removal action window differs from the seven-day live-access restriction that may follow removal of an active stream.
