1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf YouTube removed your live stream and issued a copyright strike, first identify the exact notice: a Content ID claim, an effective copyright removal request, or a scheduled removal request each has a different process. After a strike, YouTube lists three routes: complete Copyright School and wait for an eligible strike to expire, ask the claimant to retract the removal, or submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or your use may qualify for a copyright exception. A counter notification is a legal request, not a routine appeal, and it does not guarantee reinstatement.
First identify what YouTube did
Check the notice YouTube sent and the relevant item in YouTube Studio before choosing a response. The wording and status matter: a Content ID claim is not a strike, while a copyright removal request can remove content and apply a strike. A Community Guidelines action is a separate issue and is not resolved through the copyright procedures described here.

| Notice or action | What it means | What process may apply |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | A copyright claim on content; YouTube says claims do not result in a strike. | You may dispute or appeal the claim through the claim process if you have grounds. This is not a counter notification. |
| Copyright removal request and strike | A legal request to remove content. If YouTube accepts it as valid, the content is removed and a copyright strike is applied. | Consider expiry, requesting retraction, or a counter notification after removal, depending on the facts. |
| Scheduled copyright removal request | The notice says removal is scheduled but has not yet taken effect. | Act within the pre-removal window described in the notice. The counter-notification process is not available until removal takes effect. |
| Community Guidelines action | A policy action rather than a copyright removal request. | Follow the process in that specific notice; a copyright counter notification is not the applicable response. |
Do not confuse a claim appeal with a counter notification
A Content ID claim appeal asks the claimant to reconsider a claim. YouTube says the claimant ordinarily has seven days to respond to a claim appeal; a rejected appeal may lead to a copyright removal request. A counter notification is a separate legal request seeking reinstatement after YouTube has removed content in response to a copyright removal request.

What a copyright takedown can mean for a live stream
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, YouTube may display a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material; continuing to use it can interrupt or terminate the stream. A live stream may also be terminated if the channel receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.
#1 Best Overall
If an active live stream is removed for copyright, YouTube’s strike guidance says the channel receives a copyright strike and loses live-stream access for seven days. YouTube also says three copyright strikes within 90 days can make a channel subject to termination.
A licence may not prevent an interruption
If you have permission to use third-party material, check whether the rights owner has added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting, including when the stream is restricted to territories where you hold the necessary rights. An archived live stream may also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. Keep the licence and any relevant territory, platform, and live-stream terms available, but do not assume that having a licence alone prevents automated interruption.
Choose the route that matches your notice and position
| Route | When it may fit | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Wait for eligible expiry | You do not pursue a counter notification and meet YouTube’s conditions. | A strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. Expiry does not restore the removed video. |
| Ask for a retraction | You can contact the person or entity that submitted the removal request and seek withdrawal. | The claimant decides whether to retract; YouTube does not guarantee agreement. |
| Submit a counter notification | You have a good-faith basis to believe the removal was mistaken, the material was misidentified, or an applicable copyright exception supports the use. | It is a legal request shared with the claimant. Consider the required disclosure and possibility of legal action before filing. |
| Respond to a scheduled removal | Your notice says the removal is scheduled and has not yet taken effect. | YouTube describes a seven-day window to act before removal and a strike. The available actions are those stated in your notice; you cannot file a counter notification until the removal is effective. |
Waiting for expiry
YouTube’s 90-day expiry route is conditional: complete Copyright School, and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. This route clears an eligible strike when it expires, but it does not put the removed stream back online.
Requesting retraction
Use the claimant details in the notice to make a clear, factual request for retraction if you believe the removal should be withdrawn. Explain the basis and include relevant information, such as permission or evidence that the material was misidentified. A request is not a platform appeal and the claimant is not required to agree.
Acting during a scheduled removal window
Read the notice promptly and follow its instructions before the stated deadline. YouTube says scheduled copyright removals provide seven days to act before the removal and strike. Because the available options differ before and after a takedown, do not treat a scheduled notice as though the content has already been removed or try to submit a counter notification before it is eligible.
When to consider a counter notification
YouTube describes a counter notification as a legal request to reinstate content removed because of a copyright removal request. File only if you believe the removal was mistaken. YouTube identifies misidentification and possible copyright exceptions, such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain, as grounds a creator may consider. That does not mean that any particular use qualifies.

Check every element of the stream
Before filing, review the complete stream, not just its main subject. Check background music, clips, images, performances, and any other third-party material. For each element, establish whether you created it, have permission that covers the use, or have a well-founded basis for believing an exception applies. A credit, a short excerpt, or a statement that the stream is non-commercial does not by itself establish that the use is lawful.

YouTube says it must share a counter notification with the claimant. If disclosing personal information is a concern, YouTube says an authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit the request by email, fax, or mail. Do not submit information you know is false: YouTube warns that misuse may result in account termination or other legal consequences. If the legal stakes or facts are uncertain, consider getting advice from a lawyer qualified in the relevant copyright jurisdiction before submitting.

What happens after submission
YouTube states that the claimant has 10 US business days after receiving the counter notification to provide evidence of legal action. This is YouTube’s stated platform timeline, not an Indian court deadline. If YouTube does not receive evidence within that period, the content may be reinstated and the strike removed; if legal action is pending, the content stays down. Neither outcome should be treated as guaranteed before YouTube confirms what happened in your case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Indian fair dealing may matter
Section 52(1)(a) of India’s Copyright Act, 1957 lists fair dealing with a work (other than a computer programme) for specified purposes, including private or personal use such as research, criticism or review, and reporting current events and current affairs. This is Indian statutory language; it should not be replaced with the US term “fair use” as if the legal tests were identical.
The listed purposes do not decide whether a particular live stream qualifies. The purpose of your use, the work used, and how it was used all matter. A stream containing music or footage does not automatically become fair dealing because it includes commentary, gives attribution, or uses only a short segment. The statutory text alone cannot determine your individual case, and a platform counter-notification process does not establish that an Indian legal exception applies.

Practical checks before you respond
- Save the notice and record its status. Note whether YouTube describes a claim, an effective removal and strike, a scheduled removal, or a Community Guidelines action. Preserve the notice and any stated deadlines.
- Match the response to the process. Use the claim process for a Content ID claim. For a strike, assess expiry, retraction, or counter notification. For a scheduled removal, follow the notice within its pre-strike window.
- Review the complete stream and your rights. Identify every third-party element, check permissions and their scope, and gather the evidence that supports your position. If a licence exists, check whether the rights owner needs to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
- Weigh disclosure before a counter notification. Remember that YouTube shares it with the claimant. If that is a concern, consider whether an authorized representative is appropriate; do not submit a statement you cannot support.
- Track the result in YouTube’s communications. Keep copies of what you submit and watch for YouTube’s decision or any claimant response. Do not assume that filing itself restores the stream or removes the strike.
Keep a future YouTube stream running from the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube; it does not appeal a copyright strike, establish permission, or prevent a copyright owner from enforcing rights. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details. Start your free StreamNeo day.
