YouTube does not publish a specific live-stream bitrate recommendation for 1080p at 50 fps. Its official live encoder table gives adjacent figures for 1080p at 30 and 60 fps, and those figures differ by codec. Treat them as reference points—not as an official 50 fps setting—then test your chosen bitrate with your encoder and upload connection and monitor YouTube Live Control Room.
What bitrate should you use for 1080p at 50 fps?
There is no exact 1080p50 entry in YouTube’s live encoder table. The closest published settings are for 1080p30 and 1080p60:

| Codec | 1080p at 30 fps | 1080p at 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), minimum | 4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), recommended | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| H.264, minimum | 5 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| H.264, recommended | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published reference values for the named codec, resolution and frame rate; the live guidance does not specify a 50 fps value. Do not present an interpolated number as YouTube’s recommendation. Choose a starting point based on the codec you actually send, then validate it in a test stream.
Do video loops need a different bitrate?
No loop-specific change is established in YouTube’s published table. It varies recommendations by codec, ingestion resolution and frame rate, not by whether the footage is a loop or contains little movement. A static-looking image may be easier for an encoder to compress, but that does not create a separate YouTube live bitrate recommendation.

Use the same resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. If your source is 1080p50, configure the encoder to send that format if your setup supports it, but treat the closest official live-table values as reference points rather than a prescribed 50 fps target.
Set the other live encoder options
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Use the bitrate row for the codec being ingested; the recommended values are not interchangeable across codecs.
- Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s listed maximum is up to 60 fps.
- SDR color: The advanced settings list Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.
Test bitrate and connection before going live
- Check the upload connection. Run a speed test on the connection the encoder will use. YouTube does not provide a fixed upload-headroom percentage, so do not treat a particular margin as an official rule.
- Run a private or otherwise controlled preflight stream. Test the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, with audio and movement similar to the real stream. A loop with long static sections should still be tested with any busier scenes and the actual audio in the program.
- Inspect YouTube Live Control Room. Watch stream health and review any messages while the test is running. If the connection or ingest reports trouble, lower the bitrate or resolve the connection/encoder issue, then test again.
- Repeat under representative conditions. Test at the time and on the network you expect to use. A one-off successful test cannot establish that an unstable upload connection will remain reliable during a long broadcast.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
- Stream health warns of insufficient or unstable upload: confirm the encoder is sending CBR at the intended setting, check the active connection, and try a lower bitrate that the connection can sustain. Retest and monitor Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed headroom percentage.
- Image quality is poor despite a stable stream: verify the stream is actually 1080p and using the intended codec and frame rate. Compare against the corresponding YouTube reference row for that codec, while remembering there is no 1080p50 recommendation.
- Keyframe or ingest warnings appear: set keyframes to two seconds and ensure the interval does not exceed four seconds; use RTMPS where available.
- The loop plays, but the picture or audio is not representative: test the exact media and audio mix you will broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
Do not confuse live bitrate with upload encoding
YouTube’s prerecorded-video upload guidance includes high-frame-rate settings, but that page concerns uploaded files, not live ingest. Its reference to 50 fps does not fill the gap in the live table and should not be used as a live bitrate target.
