To stream a pre-recorded 1080×1920 portrait video on YouTube Live, send it as a 9:16 vertical feed through Live Control Room or an encoder, preserve the full portrait frame, and check YouTube’s vertical preview before starting the event. Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations for the video’s frame rate and codec as guidance: its published table has no separate 1080×1920 portrait row.
Choose how YouTube will receive the vertical video
YouTube documents two ways to create a vertical Live presentation. Which one fits depends on whether your video was composed for portrait and whether you need a separate horizontal version at the same time.

Use a vertical layout derived from a horizontal stream
Live Control Room can create a vertical presentation from a horizontal stream. Its layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. A center crop can cut off important content at the sides; fit-to-phone-width or stacked may change how the horizontal picture sits in the vertical canvas. Inspect the vertical preview and choose the layout that keeps the intended content visible. YouTube describes vertical Live streams as discoverable in the Shorts feed, but setting a portrait resolution alone does not guarantee that placement. Some live and fan-funding features depend on eligibility. YouTube’s vertical live-stream guidance explains the available approaches.
Send a purpose-built vertical feed from an encoder
If the recording is already composed as 1080×1920, send that portrait feed directly rather than relying on a crop of a horizontal image. For simultaneous horizontal and vertical feeds, YouTube’s documented third-party encoder workflow uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical stream. Match each feed to its corresponding key, then verify both previews before going live. The encoder route gives you control over the portrait composition; the Live Control Room layout route can be simpler when a suitable crop or layout is enough.

Recommended encoder settings for 1080×1920
Keep the output portrait at 9:16 and preserve the full prepared composition. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate in Live Control Room; the settings below follow its published encoder guidance, not a special portrait-only specification. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current technical recommendations.

Bitrate guidance
YouTube’s recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For 1080p30 it lists 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264; for 1080p60 it lists 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube’s recommended values for those resolution/frame-rate/codec combinations, not a dedicated 1080×1920 portrait requirement or a guarantee of picture quality. If the connection cannot sustain the selected rate, reduce it to a stable value and test the resulting stream.

Create and start the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule the stream. Go to Live Control Room and create an event. Scheduling can give viewers a page to find and enable reminders. YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions cover the Studio workflow.
- Select the delivery approach. For a layout derived from a horizontal stream, choose the vertical layout in Live Control Room and review center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked. For a separately composed vertical feed from a third-party encoder, use the Encoder/RTMP(S) dual-stream option and select the second key for the vertical stream. Confirm that each format is mapped to its matching key.
- Set the encoder output. Configure the recording as 1080×1920 portrait and apply the CBR, keyframe, frame-rate, codec, and audio settings above. Match the source frame rate where practical.
- Copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Paste them into the encoder’s streaming destination fields. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your event. Use RTMPS when available.
- Test before the event. Start sending from the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview. Check the vertical framing, audio, and stream health; correct any crop, orientation, or connection issue before starting the event in Studio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- End the stream cleanly. End the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder feed according to the workflow you used. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours.
Check these points before going live
- The video appears portrait in the vertical preview, with no important text, faces, or action cropped out.
- The encoder is sending the intended stream key; for dual streams, each orientation uses its matching key.
- The selected bitrate is sustainable on the actual upload connection, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Audio is present, in sync, and not unintentionally muted or distorted.
- You have rights to the video, music, and other material in the recording. A pre-recorded file is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules; using Live does not make unlicensed content permissible.
- The recording offers enough original value for your channel. A live presentation does not itself guarantee monetization or make reused material eligible under YouTube’s channel policies.
Troubleshooting common problems
The vertical preview is cropped or shows the wrong composition
If you are deriving vertical from horizontal, switch among center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked, then inspect the preview again. If the recording was composed in portrait, send the 1080×1920 feed directly from the encoder instead of expecting a horizontal crop to preserve its framing.

A bitrate above what the connection can sustain can cause interruptions or degraded delivery. Lower the rate to one the upload connection can hold consistently, retain CBR, and test again. Do not treat a published recommended bitrate as a mandatory minimum for every portrait stream.

The stream does not appear in the preview
Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key shown for the event, and that the event is configured for the selected encoder workflow. In a dual-stream setup, verify the vertical feed uses the second vertical key and that formats are mapped correctly.
The picture or audio format is rejected or plays incorrectly
Confirm the encoder is using a supported listed video codec and frame rate, and AAC or MP3 audio. Check the configured sample rate and stereo audio settings, then resend and inspect the preview before starting the event.

The recording is portrait but the event is not presented vertically
Resolution alone does not select every part of YouTube’s vertical experience. Review the Live Control Room layout or confirm that the encoder is sending the portrait feed through the correct vertical stream configuration, then check the vertical preview.
