A playlist does not require you to make the live video 4:3: YouTube’s player adapts to each video’s aspect ratio, and its guidance advises against adding black bars or padding to the video. The playlist-specific behavior is not explicitly documented, so this recommendation follows YouTube’s guidance for individual videos.
Does a 4:3 playlist change the live stream’s aspect ratio?
No setting in YouTube’s available guidance says that a playlist forces its videos into 4:3. YouTube says its computer player uses 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio and adapts to the aspect ratio of each video. Applying that per-video guidance to a playlist is a practical inference, not a documented playlist rule. YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance

For an ordinary horizontal live stream, configure a 16:9 output. If your playlist contains 4:3 recordings, their original shape does not by itself mean you should change the live output to 4:3. Avoid baking black bars or padding into the video to force a particular player shape; YouTube warns that embedded padding interferes with dynamic player sizing.
Set up a horizontal 16:9 YouTube Live stream
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Use its stream settings to obtain the stream URL and key for your encoder. See Manage live stream settings.
- Enter the stream URL and key in your encoder. Keep the key private; it gives the encoder access to send video to your broadcast.
- Choose a 16:9 output. Set the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to match the video you intend to send. Set the bitrate to suit that output and your available upload connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains that Live Control Room detects encoder settings and transcodes the stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks; follow its current recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate rather than guessing a bitrate. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Check the preview and stream health. Test before the broadcast and monitor stream health while live. Confirm that the picture appears as intended and that the connection is stable.
Decide whether to enable YouTube’s vertical dual stream
YouTube’s Live Control Room can run horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together. By default, the vertical version uses a center crop of the horizontal picture. You can review its preview and choose another available layout—fit to phone width or stacked—or turn off Dual stream under the Stream tab’s Stream settings before going live. YouTube says viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version; both use the same live chat. Get started with live streaming

Common problems and fixes
- The stream looks stretched or squeezed: Check that the encoder’s output resolution is 16:9 and that the source is being fitted appropriately. Do not add bars to the video as a workaround; YouTube’s player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio.
- The 4:3 playlist seems to dictate the live player shape: The available YouTube guidance does not establish that playlist entries control live aspect ratio. Configure the live encoder for the intended output and judge the result in Live Control Room’s preview.
- Important content is missing in the vertical preview: Adjust the vertical layout before going live, or disable Dual stream if the horizontal composition does not crop well.
- The encoder does not connect: Verify that it has the stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room broadcast. Check the encoder configuration and YouTube’s stream-health indications.
- Playback stutters or stream health is poor: Test the upload connection, then reduce the encoder’s output settings or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
