An “Excellent connection” message does not by itself explain why a YouTube Live stream freezes. First identify where the problem occurs: OBS may be dropping frames on the way to YouTube, your computer may be struggling to render or encode, or viewers may be buffering even though your outgoing stream is healthy. Check the relevant counters and stream health before changing settings.
Identify which kind of freezing you have
These symptoms can look similar to viewers but point to different causes. OBS separates connection-related dropped frames from local rendering or encoding overload, and it treats viewer-side buffering as a separate issue.

| What to check | What it indicates | Who may be affected |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped-frames counter | Frames are being lost between OBS and the ingest server because the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Potentially the whole stream. |
| OBS rendering or encoding lag indicators and messages | Your computer may not have enough resources to compose the scene or encode frames in time. | Potentially the whole stream. |
| YouTube stream health and viewer playback reports | If OBS is not reporting dropped frames or local overload, playback may be buffering on particular viewers’ devices or networks. | May be limited to some viewers. |

Diagnose the freeze in order
-
Check whether OBS is dropping frames
If the dropped-frames counter rises while you stream, investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS explains that dropped frames mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A displayed connection status is useful, but the counter and stream-health evidence are more directly relevant to this symptom.

Check for rendering or encoding lag
If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload instead, focus on the computer’s workload rather than the internet connection. Rendering requires GPU resources to compose scenes; encoding also has to keep pace with the selected output. OBS recommends freeing GPU capacity, limiting a game’s frame rate, simplifying scenes, and lowering output resolution or frame rate if necessary. On Windows, its performance guide also suggests trying Run as administrator when GPU overload is the issue.

Check YouTube stream health and the output settings
Review YouTube’s stream health and confirm the encoder settings suit your connection and chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommended encoder bitrates, not a measurement of your home’s sustained upload speed.

Ask affected viewers to test playback elsewhere
If OBS shows neither connection drops nor rendering or encoding overload, ask a viewer to try another device or network. A stream can reach YouTube properly while an individual viewer buffers because of that viewer’s device or network conditions.

Test a wired connection if you use Wi-Fi
OBS recommends Ethernet for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. A wired test can help isolate wireless instability; it will not fix local encoder overload, congestion along an ISP route, or buffering on a viewer’s connection.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide offers a starting heuristic of setting bitrate around 75% of total upload speed. OBS dates that guidance to 2024; it is a starting point, not a guarantee that the connection can sustain that rate continuously. YouTube separately recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Treat the two figures as different kinds of guidance: one is an OBS heuristic based on upload speed, while YouTube’s figures are recommended ingestion bitrates for specific encoding formats.
For YouTube’s listed H.264 settings, the retrieved recommendations are 6 Mbps for 1080p60 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. Choose quality that is reliable for your connection, then test a representative stream rather than assuming a speed-test result or an “Excellent connection” label rules out every cause of freezing. YouTube’s encoder guidance: recommended live encoder settings.

Fixes by symptom
If the OBS dropped-frames counter rises
- Reduce the configured bitrate to a rate your stable upload connection can sustain; OBS’s 75% figure is only a starting heuristic.
- If OBS offers another ingest server, test it to see whether the route to the current server is contributing to instability.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization software is interfering with the stream.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, compare with a wired Ethernet connection. If the issue continues, OBS also recommends checking cables and network hardware, restarting the modem or router, and contacting your ISP.
If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload
- Free GPU capacity by closing or reducing other GPU-intensive workloads.
- Limit a game’s frame rate so it does not consume resources OBS needs.
- Simplify scenes and reduce the output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot keep up.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator when GPU overload is indicated.
If viewers buffer but OBS appears healthy
- Ask affected viewers to test another device and another network.
- Compare reports from more than one viewer. A problem limited to a particular playback device or network differs from a freeze that affects the outgoing stream generally.
- Check YouTube stream health as well as OBS indicators; neither a broadcaster-side connection label nor a single viewer report answers every playback question.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are trying to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a different approach from diagnosing an OBS freeze: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera.
