A stable bitrate reading in OBS does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving the bitrate its selected ingest settings require—or that your connection is delivering it consistently. First read YouTube Live Control Room’s exact stream-health warning, then compare the selected resolution and codec with OBS’s output and check whether OBS is counting network-dropped frames. The right bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so lowering it blindly can miss the real problem.
What the warning means—and what it does not
OBS’s bitrate display is only one part of the picture. A reading that looks steady at a glance does not establish that the output matches YouTube’s selected ingest settings or that packets are reaching YouTube without intermittent loss. OBS says network-dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024).

YouTube can report different live-stream problems, including incorrect bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, or frame rate. The warning’s exact wording and OBS’s network statistics matter; the title alone does not identify the cause.

Read the precise YouTube warning
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health. Note whether YouTube reports a bitrate mismatch, unsupported codec, keyframe problem, frame-rate issue, or something else. Avoid changing bitrate until you know which condition YouTube is flagging.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings to OBS output
Check the resolution selected in YouTube’s ingestion settings against OBS’s actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, and video bitrate. YouTube says that, unless you are using a variable-resolution entry point, the stream should use the bitrate selected for the chosen resolution. If your connection cannot support that resolution, YouTube advises lowering the chosen resolution (YouTube Live streaming error guidance).

Verify encoder format, bitrate mode, and keyframes
YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS live settings specify CBR encoding and recommend a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The listed supported video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm the selected format matches your workflow and that audio uses a supported codec if the warning concerns audio or encoding.

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table for the full current set of recommendations and minimums. These are recommended settings, not a universal bitrate requirement: the appropriate value depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Watch OBS network statistics during a test
Run a test stream with representative motion and audio. In OBS, watch the network-dropped-frames counter and connection indicator over time, rather than relying on a single stable-rate reading. Review the OBS log after the test if the counter rises or the connection status changes. YouTube also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

If network drops rise, isolate the connection
Change one thing at a time, then repeat the test so you can tell whether it helped. OBS’s connection guide suggests trying a different ingest server, reducing the bitrate to a level your stable upload connection can sustain, and checking for VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers. If you are on Wi-Fi, test over a wired connection where possible.

If the error concerns starting the stream or the key
Do not treat a stream-key error as a bitrate diagnosis. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room and updating it in the third-party encoder. If you start through a software sign-in route without a key, consult that software’s support.

Use a bitrate that matches the actual stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists different recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended video bitrates; the page does not display a publication year. Check the linked official table for other resolutions and minimums before changing your settings.

Do not apply an H.264 figure to an AV1 or H.265 stream, or assume that a resolution-only match settles the question: frame rate and YouTube’s selected ingest settings also matter. Compare the encoder bitrate with the upload capacity your connection can sustain reliably, not just a speed-test peak. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution and bitrate, lowering resolution may be more dependable than keeping a higher setting that drops frames.

Common symptoms and the next check
- YouTube says the bitrate is incorrect, but OBS looks steady: Compare YouTube’s selected ingest resolution and bitrate with OBS’s actual output settings; a steady reading does not prove they match.
- OBS network-dropped frames increase: Treat this as a connection-delivery problem. Test another server, lower bitrate, check network software and drivers, and compare Wi-Fi with wired networking if available.
- YouTube flags codec, keyframes, or frame rate: Verify the encoder format and the live settings YouTube specifies—CBR, a two-second recommended keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), a supported codec, and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps.
- YouTube reports a stream-start or key error: Refresh the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder, following YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
