H.265 (HEVC) is supported for YouTube Live over RTMP and RTMPS, so the codec alone does not explain a “Bad video settings” warning. YouTube uses that summary for several different problems, including an open GOP, keyframes arriving too far apart, an unsupported codec or container, or multiple video streams. Find the detailed health message or issue type first; then check the corresponding encoder output rather than switching codecs blindly.
What YouTube’s “Bad video settings” warning means
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 as video codec options for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. A supported codec does not guarantee that every encoder setting or emitted stream is valid, however. The same short warning can point to distinct configuration issues, so it is not enough to identify the cause by itself.

In YouTube’s health reference, issue types associated with bad video settings include badContainer, multipleVideoStreams, openGop and videoCodec. The specific issue type and full description are more useful than the summary label. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and the Live API configuration-issue reference describe the relevant checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with the detailed health message
- Open the stream’s health details in Live Control Room. Copy the complete message, not only “Bad video settings.” YouTube’s Live API health status also exposes configuration issues, their descriptions and severity in
status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[]. - Identify the specific issue type. Match it to the checks below. If the only information available is the summary warning, the exact fault is not established yet.
- Record the actual stream settings. Note the codec and profile, container, GOP mode and interval, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and any primary or backup configuration. A preset name by itself does not confirm what the encoder emitted.
Fix the setting the issue identifies
Open GOP or keyframes too far apart
YouTube says open GOP is unsupported. Configure a closed GOP and verify the actual output rather than assuming the encoder preset applied it. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. If the issue is gopSizeLong or gopSizeOver, shorten the interval to four seconds or less; two seconds is the recommended target.

Unsupported codec, container or multiple video streams
videoCodec: Confirm the encoded bitstream’s codec, not just the encoder’s selected label. H.265 is on YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS codec list, but an invalid or different emitted codec can still trigger a codec issue.badContainer: Inspect the container actually sent to YouTube and confirm it is suitable for the chosen ingest workflow.multipleVideoStreams: Check that the outgoing stream contains one video stream, not multiple video tracks.
Resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Compare the outgoing resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s current table for the selected codec and format. YouTube says the bitrate recommendation depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; do not apply H.264 figures to H.265 by default. The RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings table supports up to 60 fps and specifies CBR encoding. Its current figures include:
| Output | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current operational recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not measurements of your encoder or a guarantee that a particular stream will be healthy. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table for your exact resolution and frame rate. YouTube detects settings automatically by default in Live Control Room.

Primary and backup stream mismatches
If you send primary and backup encodes, compare the settings YouTube flags for a mismatch. Check codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings and bitrate; where the health message identifies a primary/backup mismatch, align the relevant settings rather than changing unrelated ones.

Audio alerts and other health issues
A video summary does not prove that video is the only issue. YouTube’s health reference also lists separate audio and primary/backup issue classes. Read all reported issue descriptions and check audio codec, sample rate and channel limits if an audio-related issue appears.

Check SDR and HDR settings separately
For ordinary SDR, YouTube’s recommendations include Rec. 709 and 8-bit settings. HDR has separate requirements: YouTube currently specifies H.265/HEVC and 10-bit HDR settings, with RTMP(S) or HLS available in Control Room. For OBS, its HDR guidance specifies version 30.1 or newer, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. See YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance before configuring an HDR stream. The Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so preview appearance alone is not a reliable color check.
Test the corrected stream before going live
- Apply the change tied to the specific health issue; avoid changing several unrelated settings at once.
- Run a representative test with the intended resolution, frame rate, movement and audio.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and detailed messages during the test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, and says: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- If the warning remains, capture the full issue description and verify the actual emitted stream configuration with your encoder’s output or stream diagnostics. A codec switch is not a substitute for identifying the issue.
Common reasons the warning persists
- The encoder says HEVC, but YouTube still reports a codec issue: Check the actual encoded output and codec profile, then verify that the stream is using RTMP/RTMPS and a supported codec.
- The keyframe interval looks correct in the preset: Verify the emitted cadence and closed-GOP setting; a preset label does not establish the output structure.
- Changing bitrate did not clear the warning: The issue may instead be the container, multiple video tracks, GOP structure or another configuration. Use the detailed issue type to choose the next check.
- The stream looks fine in preview but HDR color seems wrong: Control Room does not display HDR colors; check the HDR signal settings and encoder output instead.
- The summary is all that is visible: The exact cause cannot be determined without the full health message or API issue type, plus the encoder and stream settings.
