Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: YouTube Live is where viewers watch; OBS is one way to send a looping promo video to it. For one local file, OBS can repeat a Media Source; for a sequence, it can loop a VLC playlist. The OBS route depends on a running computer and network connection. A cloud playout service can remove that home-computer dependency, but check its commercial-use terms and reliability before using it for a store display.
How YouTube Live and OBS fit together
They are not competing products in the same layer. YouTube Live is the destination: it receives a live feed from an encoder. OBS can be that encoder, taking media from a scene and sending it to YouTube using the stream URL and key. An ordinary YouTube video playlist is not an encoder and will not independently loop files into a live broadcast.
Which approach fits a store promo?
| Consideration | OBS on a local computer | Cloud playlist playout |
|---|---|---|
| Where video comes from | A local media file or VLC playlist in an OBS scene. | Looping Stream says uploaded files can be arranged in a cloud playlist and broadcast continuously. This is the vendor’s description, not an independent reliability test. |
| Computer dependency | The computer running OBS and its network connection must remain available for the feed to continue. | Looping Stream advertises playout without keeping the user’s computer online. Verify the service’s terms and performance for your intended use. |
| Playlist controls | OBS Media Source can loop a file; VLC Video can loop a playlist and optionally shuffle. VLC must be installed. | The vendor describes arranging uploaded files in order; confirm the current playlist controls and supported output with the provider. |
| Commercial display suitability | The documented setup explains encoder and media controls, but does not establish whether a particular store display arrangement complies with YouTube terms. | Commercial-use permission, uptime, and unattended-stream suitability are not established by the vendor description cited here. Confirm them before relying on the service. |
If you already have a suitable computer and want direct control over files, OBS is the straightforward DIY route. If you do not want the stream to depend on a computer at the store or home, consider cloud playout after checking the provider’s terms. In either case, confirm that your planned public live stream and in-store playback arrangement comply with applicable platform terms and rights.
Set up a looping YouTube Live stream with OBS
- Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you need the display.
- Add the promo media to OBS. Create or select a scene. For one repeating video, add a Media Source, select the file, and enable its Loop option. For multiple videos, add a VLC Video source, arrange the files in its playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and choose whether to enable shuffle. VLC must be installed for the VLC source.
- Check the scene before going live. Confirm the video is framed as intended and that its audio is appropriate for the store. OBS documents adding and configuring media sources, but does not prescribe a store layout or sound level.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the feed and check it. Start streaming in OBS and confirm the stream appears correctly in YouTube Studio. Keep a recovery plan for a computer crash, power loss, or network interruption; the local setup cannot send a feed while its encoder path is unavailable.
- Use media you have the rights to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the live stream or lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed third-party material may be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel through Content ID.
What to expect from a long-running stream
YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish the same automatic archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or more, so do not rely on an archive for a longer broadcast. For a store display, decide whether you need a recording afterward and test the intended duration in advance.

For monetized channels with live-stream monetization enabled, YouTube may serve pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads, but an ad is not guaranteed for each slot. YouTube says ads are turned off when the stream player is embedded on an external site with auto-start. A store should not assume its display stream will earn ad revenue or treat monetization as a reason to use this setup.
Common problems and practical fixes
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-stream restriction during the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- The video stops after one play: For a single file, check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For multiple files, use VLC Video and check Loop Playlist.
- A VLC playlist source is missing or unusable: Install VLC, then configure the VLC Video source and its playlist in OBS.
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that OBS is using the selected stream’s current server URL and key, that streaming has been started in OBS, and that the computer’s network connection is available. Do not share or publish the key.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Remove or replace the disputed material and use content for which you have the necessary rights. If you have a licence, contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel; a licence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted live playback.
- The stream ends during unattended use: Check the computer, power, OBS, and network path, then restart the encoder and verify the feed in YouTube Studio. The documented setup does not promise unattended uptime.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home or at the store. It streams your upload as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Check that your content rights and store-display arrangement are appropriate before starting.
