YouTube Live Playlist Streaming vs. OBS for a Church’s Prerecorded Sermons

A YouTube playlist is not a live broadcast. For a church that wants to show a prerecorded sermon as a scheduled live event, create the event in YouTube Studio and send it an encoder feed from OBS. OBS can play one local sermon file or a playlist of files, and can add slides, overlays, transitions, or live elements. If the church only needs to show one finished sermon, a regular upload—or a Premiere for an event-style first viewing—may be simpler.

What “YouTube Live playlist streaming” means

A YouTube playlist organizes videos already published on a channel; it does not, by itself, send those videos out as a live stream. A scheduled live stream is a separate event with an upcoming page that the church can share. Viewers may be offered a reminder for the scheduled event. YouTube Studio manages the event, while OBS or another encoder creates and sends the video feed.

When OBS streams a prerecorded sermon, the broadcast is live in the technical sense that an encoder is sending a feed at that time. The sermon itself was recorded earlier; it is not a real-time performance.

Choose the format that fits the service

Church’s need Better fit Why
Show one finished sermon, without live production elements Regular YouTube upload; consider a Premiere if an event-style first viewing is wanted A scheduled live encoder is not necessary simply to show an already-finished video. A Premiere and a live stream are different formats, so check the current Studio options and moderation needs.
Share an upcoming event page and let viewers set a reminder Scheduled YouTube live event YouTube scheduling creates an upcoming stream page that can be shared; viewers may have a reminder option. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance describes scheduling and event settings.
Combine a sermon with welcome remarks, slides, clips, scene changes, or a live host Scheduled YouTube live event with OBS OBS composes sources into scenes before sending the feed. YouTube describes encoder workflows as suitable for overlays and equipment such as microphones and cameras. YouTube live streaming tips
Play several local sermon or clip files in one broadcast OBS with its VLC Video source The source can play a file playlist and provides loop and shuffle options. VLC must be installed. OBS Media Sources documentation
Run recurring broadcasts without an operator at the church computer Assess a supervised event workflow or a purpose-built cloud playout service The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that a channel playlist can run itself as a live broadcast. Check any third-party service’s features and current terms before relying on it.

Set up a prerecorded sermon broadcast with OBS

1. Check that the channel can stream

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check eligibility before scheduling the service. See Get started with live streaming.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

2. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Use this event if you want an upcoming page to share with the congregation. Review the event’s visibility, start time, and other settings before distributing the link. YouTube’s live-stream settings explain scheduling and stream keys.

3. Add the sermon file or playlist in OBS

  1. For a single local recording, create or select an OBS scene, add a Media Source, and choose the sermon file. Check the source’s loop and playback-end behavior; OBS documents looping as an available option.
  2. For multiple local recordings or clips, add a VLC Video source and build its file playlist. Install VLC first, then verify the file order and loop or shuffle setting. Rehearse the transition between files and what happens when the playlist ends.

OBS documents these options in its Media Sources guide. If a file is moved, renamed, or unreadable, the source may not play; confirm every file from the church computer that will run the service.

4. Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube event

In Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key, then configure OBS to stream to YouTube using the available integration or enter the server URL and key in OBS. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “You’ll create a stream key in YouTube, and then enter it into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the event. Do not share it in public slides, messages, or documents. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test the complete service privately or unlisted

Before the service, run the whole path from OBS to YouTube using a private or unlisted test event. Check that the right event is selected and the stream preview appears in Live Control Room. Listen to the audio on the YouTube preview, not only through the church’s local speakers; verify the OBS audio meter and routing, sermon level, aspect ratio, slides, overlays, transitions, and end-of-file behavior. Test the event link and confirm who can view it. YouTube recommends advance setup, a preview check, and monitoring audio and video. See Streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips.

6. Start the encoder before the event

On broadcast day, start OBS early enough to confirm the encoder feed and YouTube preview. Then start the event in Live Control Room, unless the event has been deliberately configured to auto-start. YouTube recommends starting the encoder before the event; allow time to resolve a missing preview or muted audio before the congregation joins. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

7. End and review the broadcast

When the service is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop the OBS encoder. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Review the replay and its visibility afterward rather than assuming the archive is available to the intended audience. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

What OBS adds—and what it asks of the church

OBS is useful when the broadcast needs more than playing a finished file: an operator can switch scenes, show slides or clips, mix sources, and bring in live elements. YouTube identifies encoders as an option for such production, and says expensive equipment is not required to get started; existing equipment may be enough. YouTube live streaming tips

The trade-off is operational responsibility. Someone needs to prepare the scene and files, supervise playback and audio, start the encoder and event in the right order, and respond if the feed or a media source fails. A dedicated hardware encoder, capture card, audio interface, webcam, or wired connection is not established as necessary just to play a local sermon through OBS; those may address other production needs.

Common problems and fixes

  • No live preview in YouTube: Confirm OBS is sending to the correct scheduled event and that its server URL and stream key match the values in Live Control Room. Check the encoder connection before starting the event.
  • The event page exists, but viewers see no program: Scheduling creates the event page; the encoder still has to send the video feed. Start OBS and verify the preview before the event begins.
  • Sermon file does not play: Recheck the local file path and permissions, then open the media source in OBS from the machine used for broadcast. For a VLC Video source, confirm VLC is installed and each playlist file is available.
  • Playlist order or ending is wrong: Rehearse the full sequence, verify ordering, and test loop, shuffle, and playback-end behavior before the service.
  • Audio is missing, too quiet, or doubled: Check the source’s audio routing and OBS meters, then listen to the YouTube preview. Avoid relying only on local monitoring, which may not reveal what the audience receives.
  • The stream starts late: Start the encoder early, check the preview, and only then start the event unless auto-start is intentionally configured.
  • The replay is unavailable or has the wrong audience: Review the event’s visibility and the resulting archive after ending the stream. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not replace checking the channel’s event and replay settings.
  • Connection configuration is a concern: YouTube provides RTMPS guidance for encrypting the stream connection. Follow its instructions when configuring a compatible encoder: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Copyright, permissions, and church content

Before broadcasting or uploading a sermon, confirm that the church has permission for every included element it does not own or control—such as music, performance recordings, film clips, or slides containing protected material. A church service’s religious purpose does not by itself establish permission to use copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules for the channel and content before the event; the workflow sources above do not determine whether any particular sermon recording or accompanying music is cleared.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a recurring YouTube broadcast of uploaded sermon recordings rather than OBS scene production, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer at church can be off; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home or at the church computer.
  • Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. To try it, start a StreamNeo account.
