If a YouTube Live stream keeps buffering on BSNL, first lower the stream’s playback quality and check YouTube’s Stats for nerds—not the broadcaster’s bitrate alone. A speed test is only a snapshot: buffering can also come from Wi-Fi interference, other devices using the connection, network congestion, the playback device, or the stream’s live-latency settings. Compare the same stream on another device or connection before concluding BSNL is at fault.
Why does YouTube Live keep buffering on BSNL?
Buffering means the player cannot maintain enough playable video data to continue smoothly. A speed test may show a good result while the stream still stalls: the test measures a moment and a particular route, while playback depends on sustained speed and stability at the device, selected resolution, Wi-Fi conditions, and activity elsewhere on the network.

- Playback quality is too high for current conditions. A resolution that usually works can stall when available bandwidth drops.
- Wi-Fi is weak or interfered with. Distance, obstructions, and interference can make the connection at the TV or phone worse than a test beside the router suggests.
- Other devices are using the connection. Downloads, video calls, or other streams can leave less capacity for YouTube.
- The issue is specific to the device, app, or stream. A problem on one device or one live stream does not establish an ISP-wide fault.
- Live playback is operating with a small buffer. A broadcaster’s low-latency settings can reduce the player’s read-ahead buffer, making playback more sensitive to fluctuations.
YouTube’s help guidance does not give a BSNL-specific fix or diagnose any individual connection. TRAI’s 2025 Kolkata regional report likewise cannot establish what is happening at a particular home today. Its overall BSNL data-performance row reported a 4.06-second initial buffer delay, 58 ms 50th-percentile latency, 74.75 ms jitter, and 18.56% packet loss under that report’s regional testing conditions. Those are Kolkata report figures, not national averages or proof that BSNL caused a particular buffering event; site-level readings varied within the report. Read TRAI’s 2025 Kolkata regional report.

What bitrate do I need to watch YouTube Live?
As a viewer, you generally cannot set the creator’s encoder bitrate. That bitrate is principally an upload and ingestion concern for the broadcaster. YouTube transcodes creator streams into viewing formats, so your practical checks are whether the selected playback resolution is sustainable and whether connection speed and Buffer Health remain steady.

YouTube’s playback-error help page lists these recommended sustained speeds by resolution. They are guidance, not a guarantee against interruptions—especially for live playback:
| Playback resolution | YouTube recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p HD | 5 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 2.5 Mbps |
| 480p SD | 1.1 Mbps |
| 360p SD | 0.7 Mbps |
YouTube’s playback-error guidance gives the resolution-specific recommendations above. Separately, YouTube’s TV troubleshooting page recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That is a TV-specific help recommendation, not a replacement for the resolution-by-resolution figures or a universal threshold for every device and stream. See YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance.

If a stream stutters, manually select a lower playback quality in the YouTube player and see whether it stabilizes. On a TV, use the quality controls available in that app; exact labels and menus can vary by device and app version.
How do I check latency on a BSNL connection?
First distinguish two different measurements. Network latency is the response delay on a connection, often described as ping. YouTube live latency is how far behind the live event the video you are watching plays. A ping result does not tell you the live stream’s delay, and a live stream being behind the event does not by itself show that your connection is slow.

Check the live player’s buffer and playback diagnostics
Where the YouTube player supports it, open Stats for nerds or the available debug information and note connection speed, current and optimal resolution, and Buffer Health. YouTube describes Buffer Health as the amount of live data the player has reserved. If Buffer Health repeatedly falls as playback stalls, that is useful evidence that the player is struggling to stay ahead; it is not, by itself, proof of which part of the connection or stream is responsible. The option’s availability and access steps can differ by device. YouTube: troubleshoot video streaming issues.
Check network response separately
To investigate network latency, run a connection test on the device or a device using the same connection, and record the result with the time and location. TRAI MySpeed is an official testing option, but a single test remains a snapshot; it is not a live-stream diagnosis or an outage check. TRAI MySpeed.

Why live latency can affect buffering
Broadcasters can choose live-stream latency settings. Lower live latency reduces how far behind the event viewers are, but also reduces the player’s opportunity to read ahead. YouTube’s help document states: “With lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” This trade-off concerns the stream’s live playback behavior; it is separate from the network ping shown by a connection test. YouTube: manage live stream latency.
Diagnose the buffering in a useful order
- Record what happened. Note the exact error text, date and time, device, YouTube app or browser, stream, selected quality, connection type, and whether other sites or services stall too. This makes later comparisons meaningful.
- Try the same stream on another supported device. Keep the connection and approximate time as similar as possible. If only one device fails, restart or update its app or system. On Android, try clearing the YouTube app cache. YouTube also recommends changing connections when troubleshooting playback problems.
- Try another connection, if available. Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data or another internet connection. If playback works on the alternate path, the result narrows the issue to the original connection path or its interaction with the stream; it does not prove BSNL caused it.
- Test where the TV or viewing device is located. Run a speed test there rather than only beside the router. Move the device nearer the router if practical, reduce obvious obstructions or interference, and pause other heavy network use. YouTube recommends checking device placement and interference for TV playback.
- Lower playback quality and observe diagnostics. Note the selected resolution, connection speed, and Buffer Health in Stats for nerds where available. Compare whether lower quality stops the repeated buffering.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet only if both ends support it. A cable can help isolate a Wi-Fi issue, but it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed repair. YouTube’s Ethernet advice is specifically for people live streaming from a computer; applying it to a viewer is a cautious troubleshooting comparison, not a viewer-tested fix. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting page.
- Look for a pattern across services and devices. If the issue follows the BSNL connection across devices, streams, or other services, keep dated results and the location and contact BSNL support. If only one live stream is affected, the stream or broadcaster’s latency and ingestion conditions remain possible causes. YouTube notes that network congestion can delay streams even on a capable connection.
What the BSNL test results can—and cannot—tell you
TRAI’s 2025 Kolkata regional report is relevant as a record of testing in that region, but it cannot tell you whether a particular BSNL line is congested now or whether a specific YouTube stream is the cause. The reported figures reflect the report’s test locations and conditions. Because the report’s site-level results varied, a provider-wide conclusion from one regional report would overstate the evidence. For your own case, repeat comparable tests at the viewing location and record the date and time; use those results as evidence for support, not as a guarantee of future playback.
