If a pre-recorded YouTube Live stream reconnects but shows no picture, first check whether the encoder preview is black. If it is, investigate the video source and encoder; if it looks normal, check YouTube’s stream health, the outbound connection, and the stream destination. A reconnect alone does not identify the cause, so this split helps narrow the fault before you change settings.
Find where the picture disappears
Check the encoder’s preview or program output after reconnecting, then compare it with the feed shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the audio and video sources routed to the encoder and checking stream health; those observations help distinguish a source or encoder problem from a delivery problem.

- Encoder preview is black: Start with the media source, scene or program selection, and encoder state.
- Encoder preview is normal, but YouTube is black or has no picture: Check stream health, outbound connectivity, and the destination and key.
- YouTube shows a placeholder image or notice: Check YouTube Studio for a copyright or other stream notice before changing equipment.
Make the comparison while the problem is happening if possible. Note what the encoder shows, what Live Control Room reports, and whether the local recording contains video.

If the encoder preview is black
Check the pre-recorded source and output routing
- Confirm the intended media file is still selected and that playback has resumed at the expected point.
- Check that the source is visible and active in the selected scene or program, and that the scene or program is the one being sent to YouTube.
- Inspect the encoder’s output, not just an editor or media-player window. A visible file elsewhere on the computer does not confirm that the encoder is sending its video.
These checks apply YouTube’s advice to inspect the audio and video sources routed to the encoder. The exact controls vary by encoder, so use its own interface labels rather than assuming a particular menu path.

Check encoder and file health
- Read the encoder’s error messages and check whether CPU load is unusually high.
- Review the local archive or recording for missing or corrupted images. If the recording is also black, the problem may be upstream of YouTube.
- Update the encoder software. If the issue remains, test another encoder to help isolate whether the current one is involved.
YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU use, the local archive, software updates, and another encoder when troubleshooting a poor-looking stream. These checks can narrow the fault; they do not by themselves establish which component failed.
If the encoder looks normal but YouTube does not
Check stream health and the outbound connection
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its stream health and any displayed warnings. YouTube advises checking the outbound internet connection when the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder. Confirm that the connection is still sending data and can support the selected stream settings.

Verify the destination and stream key
Confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube stream URL and using the matching stream key. If the encoder reports a startup or key error, follow YouTube’s guidance to obtain a new key and update the encoder. A key reset is not a universal remedy for a black picture after reconnecting: use it when the evidence points to a destination or key problem.

If YouTube displays a placeholder instead of the encoder’s picture, look for a copyright or other stream notice in Studio. YouTube documents that identification of third-party content can replace the live image with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate a stream if the issue is not resolved. Follow the notice rather than assuming the encoder or a cable has failed.

Compare what changed during reconnect
If the failure happens only after reconnecting, compare the system before and after the reconnect rather than guessing at a single cause. The official troubleshooting guidance does not identify one universal reconnect-specific fault.

Check encoder settings before the next stream
Do not treat a codec or bitrate change as a proven fix for every reconnect problem. First establish where the picture is lost. For a controlled test, compare the encoder’s settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the capabilities of your software and connection.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the preview before starting the stream.
- Confirm the intended pre-recorded source is playing in the encoder output.
- Make a test reconnect and compare the encoder output with YouTube’s preview and stream-health information.
- Verify that the local archive is growing and that it contains the expected picture.
- If you use encoder failover, test it before an event and keep monitoring audio and video during the stream.
