But a 24/7 gaming stream is not guaranteed to become one complete archive: YouTube warns that streams lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Whether chat replay appears depends on the specific archive and its settings.
What chat replay looks like
On an eligible archived stream, chat replay accompanies the video and follows the timing of the original live chat. It is a record of that stream’s chat, not a new conversation taking place during playback.

YouTube says chat replay is on by default for live streams, but the channel owner can turn it off for an archive. Its presence is therefore not guaranteed even when an archive exists.
Chat replay is not the same as comments
Chat replay shows messages posted in live chat during the broadcast, synchronized with the video. Comments are a separate feature displayed below the video after the stream ends. An archive can have comments without showing chat replay, or chat replay without those messages being comments.

Why a 24/7 stream may have no complete archive
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a platform warning, not a guarantee that every long stream will fail or succeed. A viewer should check whether the specific broadcast produced an archive rather than assume the full day is available as a video.
This archive limitation is distinct from DVR. DVR is the live-stream feature that lets viewers pause or rewind while a broadcast is in progress. YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. A DVR limitation during the live broadcast does not, by itself, establish whether an archive or chat replay will be available later.

Reasons chat replay may be missing
- No archive: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so there may be no completed video with replay.
- Replay disabled: The creator can turn chat replay off for an archive.
- The stream was edited: YouTube says streams edited in its video editor will not have chat replay.
- Made for Kids setting: Live chat and chat replay are disabled when the audience is set as Made for Kids.
These are different conditions: for example, a completed archive can exist without replay because of its settings or editing, while a stream that was not archived presents a more basic obstacle.
Why chat can look different between viewers
Top chat and Live chat
YouTube offers two chat display modes. Top chat filters messages using signals, while Live chat is unfiltered. As a result, viewers using different modes may not see the same messages.

Watch page and embedded player
YouTube’s help information describes Live chat as available on watch pages, not embedded players. A viewer watching an embedded video may not see the chat surface available on the YouTube watch page.
What to check on a particular stream
- Look for a completed archive. For a 24/7 broadcast, do not assume YouTube captured the entire stream.
- If the archive exists but chat replay is absent, consider whether the creator disabled replay, the stream was edited in YouTube’s video editor, or the video is set as Made for Kids.
- If you are trying to rewind while the broadcast is still live, remember that this is DVR, not archive playback; long streams may have limited or unavailable DVR.
- If chat is visible but seems incomplete, check whether the display is set to Top chat or Live chat, and whether you are on the watch page rather than an embedded player.
