If an encoder cannot publish to YouTube from an office network, first check that it is using the exact RTMPS server URL and matching stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and ask IT to verify outbound TCP port 443 to that ingest host. YouTube recommends RTMPS and specifically advises trying port 443 for an SSL error. A timeout alone does not prove the firewall is responsible.
Which port should IT check?
Start with outbound TCP 443 to the actual RTMPS ingest hostname provided for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use that stream-specific destination; a hostname shown in documentation as an example is not a general allowlist. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, and says that if an encoder allows a port number to be specified, use 443 when troubleshooting an SSL error. See YouTube’s RTMPS encryption guidance and encoder settings guidance.

This is a check of outbound access from the encoder’s network, not a request to open an inbound port to the office. Have the network administrator verify the policy for the actual destination and inspect firewall or proxy logs during a controlled connection attempt.
Check the encoder before blaming the firewall
- Copy the correct ingest details. In Live Control Room, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and its corresponding stream key. Confirm that the encoder is not using an ordinary RTMP URL by mistake. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the stream URL and key.
- Verify protocol support and destination. Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and is configured with the exact server address supplied by YouTube. YouTube lists an incorrect URL and an encoder without RTMPS support among possible timeout causes, so a timeout is not by itself evidence of a blocked port. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting steps.
- For an SSL error, test port 443. If the encoder has a port field, try 443 with the RTMPS setup, following YouTube’s instructions. Do not substitute an arbitrary hostname or change the stream key while diagnosing the network path.
- Ask IT to check the connection attempt. Have the administrator review egress firewall and proxy logs for the encoder host, the exact ingest hostname, and TCP 443. Determine whether the connection is allowed, reset, or intercepted, and whether proxy rules or TLS inspection affect it.
YouTube’s cited documentation gives protocol and port guidance, but does not provide a complete, stable hostname allowlist. The destination to assess is the one displayed for the specific stream.

What is specific to Indian office networks?
YouTube’s published help guidance is general; it does not establish a special port requirement for Indian offices or say that Indian offices commonly block a particular port. Network policy, proxy configuration, TLS inspection, and egress rules vary by organization. Ask the office administrator to check the actual connection rather than assuming a country-wide firewall behavior.
If the connection works but the stream is unstable
A permitted connection can still fail to publish reliably if there is not enough upload capacity. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and accounting for both primary and backup streams when a dual-stream setup is used. Shared office traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check the encoder’s outbound capacity during the time you stream and consider competing network use. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measurement of your office’s available bandwidth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to consider HLS instead
If RTMPS cannot be used and both the encoder and workflow support it, YouTube documents HLS ingestion using an HTTPS URL. This is an alternative ingest workflow, not a guarantee that the office network will permit the connection: HTTPS egress rules and any proxy or inspection policy still apply. Review YouTube’s HLS setup instructions and confirm compatibility with the encoder before changing workflows.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the office network or an always-on local computer is the obstacle for a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-live service. Start the free first day.
