Plan for roughly 14.4 Mbps or 20.4 Mbps of sustained upload capacity respectively, using YouTube’s advice to leave 20% headroom. These are planning targets, not guarantees for any Indian broadband connection: test at the streaming location and during the hours the channel will run. If the connection is unstable, lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate. For replay archives, also plan around YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrate by resolution, frame rate and codec
YouTube’s official encoder recommendations vary with the incoming video’s resolution, frame rate and codec. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not show a publication year. They are not India-specific connection benchmarks or guarantees of picture quality for every game.

For the full encoder requirements, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings. If your encoder reliably supports AV1 or H.265, YouTube’s listed target at the same resolution and frame rate is lower than its H.264 target. Check codec support in your encoder, then test with representative gameplay: rapid movement and detailed scenes can reveal issues that a static screen will not.

The important figure is sustained upload capacity where the encoder is connected—not the plan’s advertised download speed or a short-lived speed-test peak. YouTube notes that upload is often lower than download, shared network use reduces capacity available to a stream, and connectivity interruptions can disrupt it. The 20% reserve is an added allowance above the target, not a YouTube-guaranteed pass/fail threshold. Actual network overhead, bitrate behavior and other household or office traffic vary. If other devices normally use the connection, run tests with that activity underway or allow more capacity.
Measure at the actual streaming location
No ISP, plan, city, wired or wireless setup, or sustained upload measurement is specified here, so there is no sound basis for saying that Indian broadband generally can or cannot sustain either target. Test the connection from the computer or streaming device that will encode the broadcast, at the hours it will operate. Repeat the test, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health during a real or private test stream. If it is unstable, reduce the target bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate.

YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming. A wired connection can avoid some local wireless variability, but it does not raise the broadband plan’s upload capacity or prove that the ISP connection is stable. A Cat6 cable is one possible Ethernet cable; the cited guidance recommends Ethernet generally and does not require Cat6.
Encoder settings that matter beyond bitrate
YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS as supported streaming protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video codecs; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps. It recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Use settings supported by both your encoder and the YouTube ingestion workflow; see the official encoder settings.

Configure and test a 24/7 gaming broadcast
- Choose a codec and target. Match the encoder’s supported codec to YouTube’s recommendation for the desired resolution and frame rate. For 1080p60, that is 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 17 Mbps for H.264.
- Check upload stability and reserve headroom. Measure sustained upload from the streaming location at the intended operating hours. Apply YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance and include normal network use.
- Connect by Ethernet when practical. YouTube recommends a wired connection for computer streaming; it cannot compensate for insufficient ISP upload.
- Set the encoder parameters. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), a supported codec and RTMP or preferably RTMPS. For stereo audio, use AAC or MP3 at the recommended 128 Kbps.
- Run a representative test. Include fast gameplay, complex scenes and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and confirm that the local recording is being written correctly.
- Set a session plan for archives. If YouTube VOD replays matter, arrange to end sessions before they reach 12 hours, then verify that the archive and handoff behave as intended for your channel.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A continuous live broadcast and an accessible replay archive are separate goals. Bitrate governs the outgoing feed; session length affects the risk that YouTube will retain a VOD. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” See YouTube’s archive-live-stream guidance.
For an archive-dependent channel, do not rely on one uninterrupted 24-hour session to produce a complete YouTube replay. Schedule sessions below 12 hours and keep a local recording as a separate copy. The cited guidance does not establish whether ending and immediately restarting preserves uninterrupted viewer playback in every channel configuration, so test the planned handoff before relying on it.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-health problems
- Stream health reports unstable connection or dropped frames: Compare sustained upload with the chosen target plus headroom. Pause competing uploads or downloads, test over Ethernet, and reduce bitrate or video settings if instability persists.
- Speed test looks fast, but the live stream still struggles: A brief peak or download result does not establish sustained upload. Repeat tests from the streaming device and at the channel’s operating hours; check other network use.
- 1080p60 is unreliable: Try the YouTube-recommended target for a lower frame rate or resolution, then retest. The right fallback depends on measured stability and the encoder’s supported codec.
- Picture quality is poor despite meeting the listed bitrate: Confirm that the selected bitrate matches the actual codec, resolution and frame rate, and test a representative fast-moving scene. YouTube’s recommendations do not guarantee identical quality across games or scenes.
- The stream runs but no complete replay appears: Check session duration. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; use sessions shorter than 12 hours when archives matter and verify the local recording.
- Local recording is missing or incomplete: Confirm the encoder’s recording destination and available storage before going live, then inspect a test recording. A local copy is useful only if it is actually being saved.
