For a pre-recorded video sent through YouTube Live at 720p and 50 fps, use 8 Mbps video bitrate with H.264 or 6 Mbps with H.265/HEVC or AV1 as a practical starting point. YouTube’s live encoder table gives those figures for 720p at 30 and 60 fps, not 50 fps, so applying them to 50 fps is an inference—not a published 720p50 recommendation. Use CBR, set keyframes every two seconds, and leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 720p50
These settings apply when an encoder sends a prepared video file to YouTube as a live broadcast. The bitrate figures are YouTube’s published 720p recommendations for 30 and 60 fps applied to 50 fps; YouTube does not list a separate 720p50 row in its live encoder table. YouTube’s live encoder guidance is the source for the live settings below.

| Setting | Practical choice for 720p50 | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 50 fps | Use this when it matches the prepared source and intended output. |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 8 Mbps H.265/HEVC or AV1: 6 Mbps |
YouTube lists these bitrates for 720p30 and 720p60. Using them at 50 fps is a practical inference. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) | YouTube lists constant bitrate encoding for live streams. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube advises not exceeding 4 seconds. |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for a secure connection. |
The bitrate recommendations above are for video, not the combined audio-and-video stream. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube allows AAC or MP3 audio; 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. Your encoder must support the codec you select.

Choose between H.264 and H.265/AV1
Use the codec your encoder supports reliably, then make sure your upload connection can carry the full stream. YouTube’s listed 720p figures are 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. The lower listed bitrate for the latter codecs may help where upload capacity is tighter, but it does not remove the need for bandwidth headroom or a compatible encoder.

Live broadcast or ordinary video upload?
“Pre-recorded” can describe either a file uploaded as a regular YouTube video or a file played through an encoder as a live broadcast. For a live broadcast, use the live encoder settings above. Do not substitute the upload bitrate guidance: YouTube recommends 7.5 Mbps for 720p SDR high-frame-rate uploads at 48, 50, or 60 fps. That figure is for uploading a video file, not live ingestion. YouTube also advises uploading at the frame rate at which the video was recorded. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Check upload bandwidth before going live
YouTube recommends keeping the stream’s total bitrate within available upload capacity, with 20% headroom. Since the total includes audio as well as video, do not treat the video bitrate alone as the connection requirement. Measure upload speed rather than relying on download speed, and account for other devices or activity sharing the connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Preflight a pre-recorded live stream
- Match the output to the source. Set the encoder to 1280 × 720 and 50 fps if that is the prepared video’s intended output.
- Set the live video parameters. Choose the supported codec and its practical bitrate above, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval.
- Use RTMPS. Enter the YouTube stream key in the encoder’s streaming configuration and keep it private; anyone with access to the key may be able to stream to your channel.
- Test with representative content. Check audio and motion similar to the actual video, then review the preview, stream health, and messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Allow time for checks. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
