Choose 60 fps when smooth motion matters and your upload connection can reliably carry the bitrate for your resolution and codec; choose 30 fps when the scene is mostly static or bandwidth is limited. YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec—not frame rate alone. At 1080p, for example, its recommended H.264 bitrate is 14 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps. At 720p, YouTube lists the same recommendations for both frame rates: 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265.
What changes when you stream at 30 fps or 60 fps?
Motion
At the same resolution, 60 fps provides twice as many frames per second as 30 fps. That can make fast gameplay, sports, and rapid camera movement look smoother. For a talking head, presentation, or mostly static screen share, the extra motion samples may matter less. This is a practical video distinction, not a promise that 60 fps will look better in every scene.
Bitrate and connection
Higher frame rate can raise YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion bitrate, but the change depends on resolution and codec. Compare settings at the same resolution and codec. The recommended bitrate is for the stream sent to YouTube; it does not guarantee that each viewer receives playback at that bitrate.
YouTube’s recommended live bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec
The following are YouTube Help’s live-ingestion recommendations, retrieved in 2026. The source does not display a publication year. “Minimum” and “recommended” are YouTube’s labels; these are not universal quality thresholds. Values are Mbps.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 | 35 | 14 | 50 |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 8 | 30 | 11 | 42 |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 | 24 | 8 | 34 |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 | 15 | 7 | 21 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 | 12 | 6 | 17 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 | 10 | 5 | 14 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
The 1080p figures show why settings need to be compared precisely: YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 60 fps; for H.264, it recommends 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. But at 720p, the recommendations are unchanged between 30 and 60 fps. The table does not establish a guaranteed visible-quality improvement at a fixed bitrate.
How to choose the frame rate and bitrate
Start with the motion in your content
- Consider 60 fps for fast gameplay, sports, or frequent camera movement if your encoder and connection can sustain the corresponding recommendation.
- Consider 30 fps for talking heads, screen shares, or relatively still scenes, particularly when bandwidth is constrained.
Set resolution and codec before choosing bitrate
Pick the output resolution and the codec your streaming setup supports, then use the matching row in YouTube’s live table as a starting point. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live encoding. Do not take a figure from a different resolution or codec and assume it applies to your setup.

Check whether your upload can sustain it
Run an upload speed test and select settings that are reliable on your actual connection, not just settings that match a brief best-case speed result. YouTube does not specify a universal upload-headroom percentage in the guidance cited here. Test under conditions similar to the planned stream and adjust if the connection or stream health is unstable.
Encoder settings and a realistic pre-stream test
YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Match the encoder’s frame rate and resolution to the live settings you chose, and use the appropriate bitrate recommendation above.

- Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in your encoder using the corresponding YouTube live-ingestion row.
- Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, without exceeding 4 seconds.
- Run a test with representative audio and movement. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the test and again during the event. If the feed is unstable, reduce the demand by changing bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then test again.
Do not confuse live bitrate with upload-video bitrate
YouTube publishes separate recommendations for uploaded videos. For example, its SDR 1080p upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those are upload-encoding figures, not the live-ingestion recommendations in the table above. YouTube recommends encoding uploaded videos at the same frame rate at which they were recorded.
What viewers receive
YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Your encoder bitrate therefore describes the incoming feed to YouTube; it is not a promise that every viewer will watch at the same bitrate. Latency is a separate setting: YouTube describes it as the delay between capture and display and notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Frame rate alone does not determine latency.
