For a 4K (2160p) YouTube Live stream at 60 fps, set OBS to 50,000 Kbps for H.264 or 35,000 Kbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1, with CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, not a guarantee that your connection or encoder can sustain them. Test with representative motion and audio before the event, and lower the bitrate or output quality if the stream is unstable.

Recommended OBS settings for YouTube 4K60

YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance recommends the following video bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps. The listed minimums are lower, but they are not the recommended targets for this format.

Ingest codec YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube listed minimum OBS bitrate field
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps 50,000 Kbps
H.265/HEVC or AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps 35,000 Kbps

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings. YouTube uses Mbps; OBS commonly displays bitrate in Kbps, where 1 Mbps equals 1,000 Kbps. Use the recommended value for the codec you actually send to YouTube. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

For an ordinary SDR stream, select an encoder/codec combination supported by your installed OBS version and system. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends RTMPS. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S), and AV1 is not supported for HDR. See YouTube’s encoder guidance for the current protocol and codec details.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up OBS for 3840×2160 at 60 fps

  1. Set the output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Values to 60, if those match your intended stream. The base canvas and output resolution are separate: the canvas describes your scene layout, while the output resolution is what OBS sends. OBS’s overview explains the video settings. Labels and options may differ by OBS version and platform.
  2. Choose an available streaming encoder and codec. In Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, then open the Streaming tab. Select an encoder that your hardware and OBS installation support, and confirm which codec it outputs. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation depends on that codec, so do not choose the number before confirming the encoder.
  3. Enter the bitrate and rate-control settings. Set rate control to CBR. Enter 50,000 Kbps for H.264 or 35,000 Kbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 s. If OBS offers an interval field in frames rather than seconds, use the value corresponding to two seconds at your configured frame rate; at 60 fps, that is 120 frames. Do not exceed YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
  4. Configure YouTube ingest. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use its stream key in OBS’s streaming service setup. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. Prefer RTMPS when the option is available.
  5. Check upload capacity and test. Run an upload-speed test, then make a private or unlisted test stream using similar motion and audio to the real event. YouTube recommends testing before going live; monitor the stream health indicators in YouTube Studio. A speed-test result alone does not establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast.

OBS’s general streaming overview advises setting bitrate with upload speed and service limits in mind; 60 fps can also demand more system resources than 30 fps. It is not a dedicated 4K60 preset, so use the YouTube codec-specific values above and validate them on your own setup.

Choose a bitrate your setup can sustain

The recommended figures are targets for YouTube ingest. The practical choice also depends on stable upload capacity, encoder capability, and system load. H.265/HEVC and AV1 have lower listed 4K60 recommendations than H.264, but that does not make either automatically the better choice: verify OBS and your hardware can encode the selected format reliably, then test end to end.

  • If your upload connection has limited headroom or varies, do not assume a brief speed-test peak will sustain the recommended bitrate during a full stream.
  • If OBS or the encoder struggles at 4K60, lowering output resolution or frame rate may be more reliable than insisting on 4K60.
  • If YouTube or OBS reports connection-related dropped frames, reduce bitrate and test again. Lowering bitrate can improve delivery stability, but it does not fix every encoder or hardware bottleneck.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the ingest resolution and codec are not the only factors affecting what each viewer receives. Also, 4K/2160p streams do not offer YouTube’s low-latency option; YouTube sets them to normal latency. Details can change, so check the current YouTube live encoder settings before an important broadcast.

Troubleshoot an unstable or incorrect 4K60 stream

Symptom Likely cause to check What to try
Dropped frames or an unstable connection The upload connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, or its performance varies. Lower the bitrate, close other upload-heavy applications, and repeat a realistic test. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate.
Encoder overload or choppy output despite a stable connection The chosen encoder or system may not handle 4K60 encoding consistently. Check OBS’s performance indicators and system load. Try a supported hardware encoder if available, or reduce frame rate or output resolution and test again. The bitrate recommendation cannot establish a particular computer’s encoding capability.
OBS rejects or caps the requested bitrate The selected encoder, OBS version, or active output configuration may constrain the field. Confirm the active streaming encoder and output mode, verify you are editing the streaming bitrate field, and check the encoder’s supported options. Do not assume a reported cap is a YouTube-wide limit; YouTube’s 4K60 recommendations are codec-specific.
Stream health is poor even though a speed test looks sufficient A speed test is a snapshot, while live delivery depends on sustained upload and realistic encoder workload. Test for long enough under conditions similar to the event, including representative movement and audio. If health worsens, lower bitrate and repeat.
HDR option or codec is unavailable HDR has different ingest guidance, and encoder support varies by installation and system. Check YouTube’s current HDR requirements. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR in the cited guidance.
