YouTube Kids was not discontinued on TVs. Starting in July 2024, Google moved its TV experience into the regular YouTube app, where families open it by selecting a child’s profile. Some families have reported profile-switching loops and children being able to reach adult or guest profiles; those reports are separate from the intended migration. To get started, sign in to the YouTube app with the parent account linked to the child’s profile, then select that profile—and enable YouTube’s four-digit Parent code to restrict certain account changes and signed-out viewing.
What changed to YouTube Kids on TVs?
Before July 2024, many families could open YouTube Kids from a separate app on a smart TV, streaming device, or game console. Google began moving that experience into the regular YouTube TV app that month. The dedicated YouTube Kids TV app icon was being removed; the child-focused experience was not officially discontinued on TV. Google’s announcement described the move and said parental controls and available content were not changing, though the new route can feel different to families.
The intended route is to choose the child’s YouTube Kids profile from YouTube’s “Who’s Watching?” screen or its profile switcher. A profile may not appear if the TV is signed in with a different parent account, or may open the supervised YouTube experience if it is configured both as a YouTube Kids profile and a supervised account.
How to open YouTube Kids in the YouTube TV app
- Install or update the YouTube app on the TV, streaming device, or console.
- Sign in with the same parent-linked Google account used to create the child’s YouTube Kids profile.
- If “Who’s Watching?” appears, select the child’s profile.
- If YouTube opens directly into another account, open the left-hand menu, select the profile picture, then select the child’s account or YouTube Kids profile.
Google says a child’s profile should be available across signed-in smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles when the same parent-linked account is used. Menus and support can vary by device, region, and account setup. See Google’s TV setup instructions.

If the child’s profile is missing or opens the wrong experience
Check the parent account and profile type
- Confirm the TV’s YouTube app is signed in with the same parent-linked Google account that manages the child’s profile.
- Open YouTube’s profile or account page in the app instead of relying only on the TV’s home screen.
- Check whether the child has a YouTube Kids profile, a supervised YouTube account, or both. Google warns that a profile configured both ways may open supervised YouTube rather than YouTube Kids.
Refresh the app’s sign-in state
- Update the YouTube app; use the TV manufacturer’s or streaming device’s app store if needed.
- Restart the TV or device fully, rather than leaving it in standby.
- Sign out of YouTube, then sign back in with the parent account and select the child profile again.
- If it remains missing, remove the TV’s YouTube account and add it again. Google also provides instructions for removing an account from YouTube on a TV, including remote removal options.
Reinstalling the app may be another reasonable way to clear stale app state, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Do not delete the child’s profile as an initial troubleshooting step: Google’s profile deletion instructions describe a destructive action, appropriate only when you intend to start over.
What families reported about switching loops
Some families described a loop after the migration: the regular YouTube app told them to move to YouTube Kids, while the old Kids app sent them back to YouTube. Reported symptoms included a child’s selection failing, returning to a sign-in prompt, or sending the user back to the old app. A September 2025 report summarized user reports and said a fix had been rolled out, but the available account does not establish the fix’s timing or scope through an official Google status announcement.

These reports do not establish one universal, currently active bug affecting every TV. They are consistent with a profile-migration or app-state failure in affected configurations, but Google’s public instructions explain the intended path rather than confirming a common cause. If the steps above do not resolve the issue, capture the exact message and device details before escalating.
How to stop children switching to adult or guest profiles
Enable YouTube’s TV-level Parent code. From YouTube’s homepage on the TV, open Settings, select Parent code, then follow the prompts to create or reset the four-digit code. Google says it is required to watch YouTube while signed out, access accounts for older household members (generally over 13 or the applicable local age), and remove accounts from that TV. The exact menu can vary across TV platforms.

This is a YouTube-on-TV control, not the Google Account password or a lock for the whole television. It does not protect other streaming apps or necessarily prevent a child from leaving YouTube to open another app. Without the Parent code, a child may be able to leave the Kids profile for signed-out viewing or an adult or guest account, depending on the device and account configuration.
If you cannot find the Parent code option, check that you are in the main YouTube TV app settings rather than YouTube Kids profile controls, and look for a different label or menu placement on your device. Not every platform or older interface supports every current feature. The YouTube TV Parent code is also distinct from the YouTube Kids in-app secret code and parent settings described in YouTube Kids profile controls. Choose the child setup that fits your family

To set up a guest profile, open YouTube on the TV, open the left-hand menu, select the profile picture, choose Set up YouTube Kids, then Set up Guest Account and complete the on-screen steps. To remove it later, open the YouTube account page, use the account-management control beside the Kids profile, and select Remove from this device. - Record the exact on-screen message, device brand and model, operating-system version, YouTube app version if available, and country or region.
- Install available TV firmware and YouTube app updates, then fully restart the device.
- Sign out of every YouTube account on the TV.
- Add only the parent account first, then reselect the existing child profile.
- Enable the YouTube TV Parent code and test whether the child can leave the Kids profile.
- If the account remains stuck, remove YouTube’s access on the device using Google’s account-removal controls, then sign in again.
- Report the result in the official YouTube or YouTube Kids Help Community. Include the device and software versions, region, exact error or loop, profile type (Kids, supervised, or guest), and whether the Parent code is enabled.
Why the TV’s own child profile may not solve it
Samsung and LG TVs, Android TV and Google TV devices, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, consoles, and other platforms do not necessarily present identical YouTube menus or account controls. A TV-level child profile can also be separate from YouTube’s account switcher. Users have reported Google TV profile changes not staying synchronized with YouTube accounts; that is a distinct integration issue, not proof of the same YouTube Kids migration bug. Google documents Kids profiles across signed-in TVs and streaming devices, but account state, regional rules, and device support can affect what appears. If a child-facing setup is essential, test both opening the intended Kids profile and trying to leave it on the specific TV before handing it over.
